[Pharo-project] pier image is stuck

randomly, my pier image locked up.. it has a VERY light load on it right now. i am the only one accessing it while it is under development.. this morning, i just got a proxy error.. i tried to attach to it via vnc, but it was non responsive. i downloaded the image and fired it up.. it just sits there, pegging the CPU at 100%.. i tries to escape out, but it does nothing.. any ideas on how to wake it back up? -- ---- peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary http://www.CodingForHire.com http://www.coffee-black.com http://www.painlessfrugality.com http://www.twitter.com/sergio_101 http://www.facebook.com/sergio101

[Pharo-project] Using Pharo from the command-line

Hello: I just try to get started with Pharo to experiment with some benchmarks and would be grateful for some basic hints, since the documentation on pharo-project.org is not to excessive. As far as I read in the documentation of the language shootout[1], I will need the OSProcess package. How can I load this package into the image downloaded from p-p.org? My second problem is to execute code from the command line. I tried a simple example file $ cat test.sq Transcript open; cr; show: 'Hello, world'. $ Squeak\ 4.2.1beta1U.app/Contents/MacOS/Squeak\ VM\ Opt pharo1.0-10418-BETAdev09.08.3.image test.sq But this only leads to a debugger popping up in installSourceFile saying "No content to install". Looks like aStream is nil which should have the data loaded from file:test.sq Any pointers to documentation which might discusses command line related features are very welcome. I actually just need a way to choose a benchmark to be executed from the commandline. The actual code could already be in the image. [Pharo-project] is there an easy way to know the SmallInteger instances?

If I do SmallInteger alIInstances I get an empty array, and of course, with SmallInteger instanceCount I get zero. Now, I can understand that from the VM point of view, but for the final user, this should be polymorphic. For example, for instanceCount, I would like to know all the "variable slots" that has a 1 in the last bit. Is this already possible? if true, which message? if not, should I hack in the vm and code a primitive that does this? And the same for allInstances, if I can inspect 5, I should be also to inspect SmallInteger allInstances, and SmallInteger allInstances first, etc.... thanks Mariano

Hello, I need implement remote updating some dll's for running pharo application. This dll's used by FFI. I want done this by unloading dll from VM. Then loading new updated dll. And then continue app execution. Is it possible? Or only way is to restart pharo?

Hi everybody. We want to announce that we've created a mailing list called "Smalltalk VM Beginners" where all the people interested in VM can share knowledge. The aim of this mailing list is create a good and positive energy and spread the knowledge around the Squeak VM. If you always wanted to know something on the VM but never dare to ask, join the mailing-list, may be we will not know it but we will try hard to learn it together. The idea is that we can help each other, welcome people to learn about the VM, and increase and share the knowledge about it in the community. Everybody can ask questions, everybody can help. This mailing list has more or less the same idea of pharo-users or squeak-beginners. Now, to clarify the objectives of the mailing list, we propose some requirements: - Be polite, respectful. - No question is stupid and all questions are welcome. We welcome the most basic questions someone can ask about the VM like, "is it written in C?" "How can I download the code?" - This mailing list should be useful for people that are just interested in knowing a little about the VM, to those who want to know how certain things are done, and specially for those that are learning about the VM because they need to extend or modify it. - If you have a heavy question, you will probably not get the answer in this mailing-list but this is not a problem you can ask in the Squeak VM mailing list. - The idea is that we can help each other.
