Hello, I am porting the FIX protocol to Squeak/Pharo. http://www.fixprotocol.org/ It is the Financial Information eXchange protocol. It is used by many firms in the financial industries, stocks, forex, etc. There is good documentation and also a semi-reference implementation in Java. http://www.quickfixj.org I have a partial port started but I wanted a check with those who know more than I about proper Smalltalk coding. In the Java implementation there are over 2000 classes. In the protocol there are approximately 90 message types and 956 field types. I am initially creating the message classes as they form the basis of the protocol and the fields are simply instance variables and methods in the message classes. I am not porting the Java library. I am implementing the protocol in Smalltalk from the documentation. Initially I have created a Fix44Field class with its necessary variables. There are several versions of the Protocol and FIX 4.4 is the one required for my application. With this Fix44Field class I am creating a Dictionary with the 956 different field types. I am planning on creating a constructor method which will create the desired field from the information in the dictionary about the field and its properties. Am I way off base here? Should I really create the 956 classes necessary to for each field in addition to the 90 or so message classes, and then I don't know what else I haven't discovered yet. Having 1000+ classes just seems unwieldy and naively it just doesn't feel like the Smalltalk way. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen such an example to my memory. I don't know enough about Java to know if it is good Java form either. When I have a reasonably fleshed out, tested and working solution, I will make the source available under a MIT license. I would love to see Squeak/Pharo become an out of the box viable option for trading applications. Advise and wisdom greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jimmie

Hi guys I think that over the years I (but also many of you, I know) tried to expose newbies to smalltalk or our culture. And often we get bad reactions, bad windows, bad colors, slow, why not in svn, ..... I think that showing Smalltalk to newbies is the best we can do to ourselves, not really to attract new people but also to get a large kick in the %^&* because most of the time students are not stupid, they are exposed to other technos. So each time we believe we want to show them something cool and they do not really consider it as cool as we believe, we can of course think that they are idiot (some of them are) but most of the time we can also think that may be we stayed too long in our little boxes and the world moved (interfaced well with c, fast, cool frameworks, has cool tools, processes (integration...), cool UIs, web stuff.....). So each time we get down because we do not see the little flame opening in the yes of the others we can think hard and get from them what we missed. I really happy to get exposed to student acid tests, this is a valuable feedback and I wanted to share that with you. Stef

As I port code from Sophie, I keep running into WeakArray>>isFinalizationSupported calls. Why was this method removed from Pharo? I want to make sure I understand what I'm doing when I remove these calls. Thanks. [Pharo-project] UI for Shortcuts [WAS: Which Keymaps/Shortcuts do we want to have?]

Hi, I would like to discuss the UI for shortcuts and not to impose it :). So.. I was exploring the Idea of configuring the shortcuts in settings as the screenshot shows. What do you think of that? I don't think we need a separated tool to configure shortcuts. Settings look ok. Tomorrow I'll be putting a lot of effort on it ;). Cheers! Just found some old code of mine and pushed it to squeaksource. In a 4.1 Squeak or recent trunk image do (Installer repository: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/Fireworks') install: 'Fireworks'. (Smalltalk at: #FireworksAnimation) start. In a 1.1.1 Pharo image do ((Gofer new squeaksource: 'Fireworks') package: 'Fireworks') load. yes, yes, depreacting. But....it is confusing having THREE things for the same stuff. So, since we now have "Finder" and we want to push that, what about removing MethodFinder and MessagesNames for Pharo 1.2? At least, what about removing them from the menu so that not to confuse new comers. And then, those hacky guys that prefer MethodFinder or MessagesNames can add it to the menu or open it by hand. And then, in 1.3 we really remove not only form menu but the code itself. Cheers mariano
