Hi, Morph>>heading is from eToy. It is used to rotate a Morph. If we remove it, we remove the possibility to rotate a morph. What are your positions about this behavior ? Do we considere it as a system behavior or as an eToy thing which must be removed ? [Pharo-project] Shared directories: The bug is quicker than the eye

Hello all, I'm not sure what to make of this one. I just spent a couple of hours trying to find the "leak" in an algorithm of mine. It was reading roughly 1200 records, claiming to have processed all of them, and yet writing only about 450 rows into an output text file. One clue should have been that the number of output rows was somewhat random; I did not fully appreciate that until I worked around the problme. I tried an explicit #flush - no help. I looked for logic errors and found none. The file was being written to a Windows hosted share mounted by CIFS (which I am learning to view with contempt) from Ubuntu 9.04. You can see where this is going: writing the file locally gave the expected result. Any ideas on how one might further isolate the problem? My trust in Windows is well known<g>; I have never liked shared directories; I _really_ do not like CIFS as compared (reliability wise) to SMBFS; the network between me and the server is in question too (long story). All of that said, file support in Squeak, and hence so far inherited by Pharo, is not the best code I have seen to date, so it is easy to suspect too. Can one argue that since it worked locally, Pharo is not the problem? The little bit that I know of cifs is not encouraging. It sounds as though things moved from an easily killed process into the kernel which shows an almost Windows-like unwillingness to shut down when it cannot see servers. I have found numerous reports of problems copying large files over cifs, and I have enountered them too. Bill

I am a Java & .Net application programmer who has flirted with Smalltalk for a long time without doing the "deep dive" to really understand it. Pharo and Seaside are making me think that everything is coming together now for another try. That and some micro-ISV ambitions to give me a real reason to write some code outside of work. For my type of project I really need a db package and a gui package. That leads to the questions: 1. Right now, is SqeakDBX my best choice for a db interface? Sqlite is my db of choice for the project I have in mind. 2. For the UI, I've been reading about the choices and I'm having a hard time finding a currently supported project. Do I go with polymorph by default? For the UI, what about "self-hosting" a Seaside instance and doing the UI in the browser? Ie, the app starts a Seaside server and opens a browser window pointed at the apps main window (home page). Can that be done? Is it a good idea? I hope you can give me some direction. I like the direction of Pharo and Seaside is just plain cool. I want to do this to get my head outside the coding box I'm kind of stuck in. And have some fun. Thanks for any help, Rick

Hi list, I learned something fun today from a friend, how to make Pharo produce random garbage! Make a class AC which is defined as: Object subclass: #AC instanceVariableNames: 'a' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'OB-Standard-Browsers' Then you make a second class AB defined as: Object variableByteSubclass: #AB instanceVariableNames: '' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'OB-Standard-Browsers' Then you make accessors for 'a' in AC Now execute: AB superclass: AC And then you do "AB new a" which gives you back random data. I discovered a puzzling behavior: removeElement: element | oldCat | oldCat := self categoryOfElement: element. SystemChangeNotifier uniqueInstance doSilently: [ super removeElement: element]. self notifyOfChangedSelector: element from: oldCat to: (self categoryOfElement: element). I staring at it and i wonder, what the author meant by doing: super removeElement: element which effectively wipes out given element, but then next line uses: self categoryOfElement: element huh??? -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

I donÂ´t understand the behavior of printString method. in a class I define a method #style , which returns an array... style style notNil ifTrue:[ ^style ] ifFalse:[ ^{ self borderColor . self borderWidth . self color . self gradientColor . (self cornerStyle = #rounded) . true }]. That method returns many times an Array. If #printString of that array is called the result is... '{Color black. 0. (Color r: 0.892 g: 0.887 b: 0.879). nil. false. true}' Well i have another method with same name in another class style ^{ self borderColor . self borderWidth . self color . self gradientColor . (self cornerStyle = #rounded) . true } but in that case when i call #printString of the Array result ... 'an Array(Color transparent 0 (Color r: 0.827 g: 0.827 b: 0.827) nil true true)'. I donÂ´t understand nothing :| Both are instances of Array, and both is declared of same way. Hello all, I just looked around for thread-safe collections, and found nothing that looks like a shared dictionary. The squeak-dev archives contain the obligatory newbie posts (wanting all collections to be thread safe) and the expected replies, some of which are overly dismissive of the idea. Something that protects things like #at:ifAbsentPut: and friends is _really_ useful. Am I missing an existing implementation? Bill
