My code to download some UTF8 text with japanese kanji from an url: url := 'http://www.hatinosu.net/onsen/import.kml' asZnUrl. url_string := url retrieveContents. url_string class. ByteString Now the japanese parts of url_string are unreadable. What I need is WidString and not ByteString. On linux I "solved" the problem with this workaround. download := 'wget -O /tmp/file.tmp "http://www.hatinosu.net/onsen/import.kml"'. OSProcess thisOSProcess waitForCommand: download. fs := FileStream fileNamed: '/tmp/file.tmp'. string := fs contents. fs close. string class. WideString How do I do this without extern programms? Problems Pharo 3.0 & Windows 8.1 (64 Bit)

Dear all, i have problems with Pharo 3.0 under Win 8.1 (64 Bit). When i quit Pharo and then restarting the it, Pharo-VM and Windows hangs. After some time (2-3 Minutes), the Pharo VM File Dialog opens. From time to time the Windows Desktop (!) crashes and restarts. No Problems under Windows 7. Looks like a Problem with the VM. Has someone else seen this behavior under Win 8.1? best solution to store data

Hello, I want to try to make a financial app for a organisation. There are some 50 customers so also 50 invoices a year. Then the payments . Also 50 a year. Cash and bank accounts . Every month some 10 - 20 things. So on my disk on the programm I now use it costs me some 30 - 50 Kb a year. What are my options for storage of those data. I could use a database , but I wonder if there are more and better options. Roelof

Date text converter/formatter

Does exist an "user friendly" Date text converter and/or formatter package? I'd like to specify the format of certain dates, in the way you normally do this, it is... with a string such as 'dd/mm/yyyy' or 'dd/mmm/yyyy'. Date's #printOn:format: expects a different parameter, which seems really convoluted. [1] And because I'll convert back and forth from/to String I'd like to know if there is a parser (other than DateParser). Thank you! Esteban A. Help to get the classes/methods that were updated after compilation.

Hello! So, i need to know what classes/methods have been changed so that i can run the critic browser tests on the fly. I remember there's a way to do it, but not exactly how to use it. Can i have some help with that? (or a link to somewhere that is explained) Also, i need a way to gather environments and associate them with rules, what would be the best type of collection/etc... to do that?

[ANN] Pointer Detective

greetings all, I had an itch to scratch... I find it difficult using the tree list of the standard Pointer Explorer to track down why objects aren't garbage collected. I always fear I'm not going to notice getting caught in a reference loop. So I created a tool presenting an alternative view as a directed graph. The graph incrementally builds out from the target object as you explore it. Nodes are colourised to help manage complexity. The attached snapshot is produced from evaluating the following Workspace script... testObject := 'END5'. ref1 := { testObject. nil }. ref2 := { ref1 }. ref3 := PDTestResource new heldObject: ref2. ref1 at: 2 put: ref3. "note the reference loop this creates" PointerDetective openOn: testObject. Now I expect I'm duplicating something done before, but I couldn't find anything quickly and it was an opportunity for some goal direct learning of Morphic. Thanks to Roassal an option for a spring-force layout is provided. That code was copied rather than create a dependency, and might need to be rationalized later. The code is a bit rough from hacking around learning how to make things work, but its functional, so its time to get it out in the open. Hi, With the valuable help of the community and the GLMBasicExamples I have been able to build basic outlining interface and functionality. Here is a screenshot: http://www.enlightenment.org/ss/e-53f4243a4dc127.49773492.jpg There are some issues: 1. Now I would like to make the nodes in the tree persistent in the sense that if I wrote something in the node body (left upper part of the browser) and I select another node, when I visit the previous node, the text in the body still is there. How can I do this? 2. I would like to make the current node always selected by this blue highlighting. With some operations like moving nodes to the left or to the right, the current node gets out of focus, despite of the operations being done over it. There is any way to say Moose browsers where to put the selections, besides of explicit selection with the mouse. 3. Some time ago I asked about how to make tree labels (headers), at the left of the browsers editable. There is any way to make this? Thanks a lot, Offray

GUI construction under Pharo

Hi For what I've read and study Smalltalk was great a RAD, it was infact used a lot in financial services for that reason. Now I see that most commercial versions of Smalltalk have a GUI builder, but non of the open source. Wouldn't have a GUI building tool be a priority?
