Capturing a stream

Hello everyone. I have the following question. I have a specific 'echo ...' command, which I send to the linux console via " OSProcess command:'echo ... ' ". This echo command, when executed on the native linux console, stands by until it receives some message. Following this, I have to execute a 'pub...' command, which gives some information that the echo command will print on screen. On linux, you run 'echo..' on a terminal and 'pub...' on another. My objective here is to capture the output of echo into a smalltalk variable for later use. Normally, if a console command prints something immediately to screen, I use *(PipeableOSProcess command:'some command') output.* It is here a little different though, since this command will not print something immediately to screen. I want to do something like this, where the final output of 'echo..' stays in stringVar. *stringVar := (PipeableOSProcess command: 'echo...') output. * *(Delay forSeconds:3) wait.* *(OSProcess command: 'pub... ').* *(Delay forSeconds:3) wait.* Thank you all.

Object select or create methods

During my daily work in another framework, we are able to do something very handy like so: myThing := Thing findOrCreateByKey: 'red_thing'. where the key is some underscored all lower case unique name for an object we will be calling all the time. this will return either a new thing with a key of 'red_thing' or the current one that already exists. We can also do something like: myThing updateWithDictionary: aDictionary. and it will flip through the dictionary and assign values to the instance variables. The above is very handy. I am currently creating a bunch of methods that populate my image with real objects, and could use these methods. My question is. Does a behavior like this already exist? If not, I'd like to add these methods to my project (in monticello). They will be used with several different objects, so should I add the methods to Object? I would imagine this is something I would want to use a great deal. How would I go aobut making this something I could include easily in further projects? I realize that the 'updateWithDictionary' is very inefficient, but this will just be somethign that runs once, during data import, and never again. I just want to make sure I am not doing anything whacky. Thanks!

Notification on GC of an object?

Hi all, does anybody here have experience with hooking into the GC mechanism so that an object gets notified when it is collected? I have a setup here with auto generated classes that I would like to remove when their unique instance disappears. So Iâd like to let the GC figure out all the complicated tracking and inform me whenever such an object is collected, then Iâll zap the class as well. Metacello does not load the expected version from ConfigOf

Hi all, I am trying to load a specific version of PetitParser in a Moose image. A Moose image comes with the latest development version of PetitParser. So, I am trying to downgrade to an older version. So, when I load the version manually, older versions of the packages are loaded: (ConfigurationOfPetitParser project version: '1.51') load But when I try to load the same version within my ConfigOf the expected packages are not loaded and list of the PetitParser packages loaded remains unchanged. Here is how my baseline looks like: ConfigurationOfDummyParser>>baseline01: spec <version: '0.1-baseline'> spec for: #'common' do: [ spec blessing: #'baseline'. spec project: 'PetitParser' with: [ spec className: #ConfigurationOfPetitParser; versionString: '1.51'; repository: 'http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/Moose/PetitParser/main/' ]. ]. I also tried creating a version but it didn't help. ConfigurationOfDummyParser>>version10: spec <version: '1.0' imports: #('0.1-baseline' )> spec for: #'common' do: [ spec blessing: #'stable'. spec description: 'version 1.0'. spec author: 'usmanbhatti'. spec timestamp: '12/19/2014 16:35'. spec project: 'PetitParser' with: '1.51'. ]. I also had a look at the package the configuration tries to load and the list shows correct packages to be loaded (see screenshot). How to subclass Float class

It looks like when I want to create a subclass of Float, I have this odd class creation message. Moreoever, I can add instance variable to this new class: when compiling there are wipe out: argument instanceVariableNames: '' remain empty. If I change Float to Object, all get back to normal. Why is it like this ? [ANN] Visual Memory profiler

Dear Friends and Colleagues, We are happy to announce Memory Profiler, a new profiler for Pharo. This profiler gives a nice output that indicates the memory consumption along the method call graph. Consider the following piece of code: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= (MSP profile: [ Object browse ] onPackagesMatching: 'Nautilus*' ) inspect -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Consider that MSP uses instrumentation, therefore long execution may take really long. The code above takes about 19 seconds on my iMac. It opens a visualization that indicates some interesting fact about memory consumption. For example, the expression âObject browseâ consumes 14 851 kb with instances of the class Point. More than 1M of points are created. issue with and/or inlining

Hello, I'm currently working on an embedding of the miniKanren logic programming language in Pharo (http://minikanren.org/) and I have run into an issue with the method compilation internals I was hoping someone could shed some light on: miniKanren has an operator, fresh, that basically evaluates a block and returns a logic variable. My current syntax for a conjunction of logic variables is: var1 and: var2 When I try to use the same syntax for fresh: var1 and: [ :var2 | var2 ] Compilation fails with "Warning: and: (or:) takes zero-arg block" which seems on first glance to come from the compiler attempting to inline my and: call. If I add an auxiliary method andFresh: that evaluates the block and and:'s the result in 2 steps, my tests pass. What I'd like to know is: 1) Is there a work around to let me use the and: syntax here? 2) Might my overriding of and: and or: for normal logic variables cause other problems I'm not thinking of? Obviously this is not a critical issue, but my code's aesthetics are at stake, and if we can't have pretty code, then what can we have? Thanks, Evan

Extending GTSpotter

Hello, I am having a blast with GTSpotter - itâs the missing link for me, just one step to ask a question from Pharo. Keeps the flow going! Being new to the innards of Pharo, Iâve decided to try something. I would love documentation in GTSpotter. For example, I am interested in how packages are organized in Pharo. Cmd+Enter: âPackage' I get a list of package type classes. Cmd+Sh+Right Arrow. Now I see all the classes in the Classes category ... PackageInfo, PackageOrganizer, GRPackage, RPackageOrganizer - all interesting candidates in my exploration. But now I need to browse into each, look at the docs, then bring back GTSpotter, navigate to the last context with History, and repeat. More than one step. So I am going to try: - when showing all items in classes and methods categories, add a little [d] tag to the end of the item text to indicate if there is documentation for that item (class/instance or method docs) - Cmd+Sh+Right will display the docs. Is this doable within the current framework? If so, I am going to chip away on this. Thanks, -Ed
