I am trying to experiment with Bloc and Brick. I downloaded the packages, and want to "play around with it" by experimenting with the examples in it. But how do I open the examples? The github page for both Block and Brick doesn't really list much documentation. Taking from an arbitrary Brick example, these things don't work: foo := BrExamplesShowroom new. foo openInWorld. - or - BrExamplesShowroom openPlayer Sorry for the naive quesiton. - Steve PS Is Brick/Block the thing to learn these days? Is this where development is heading?

Does anyone know Spec?

I created a simple listbox. It looks like this: https://s3.amazonaws.com/steverstuff/items.png If I hit a specific selection, say "Item B", how can I make smalltalk run an arbitrary piece of code? (ie: "Transcript show: 'got here'"). Method "whenSelectedItemChanged" should, in theory, do this. It is mentioned in the [[ https://benjamin.vanryseghem.com/projects/spec/docs/example/#protocolList][…]] tutorial, but for some reason it's not executing. Did a new verion of spec change things since the documentation was written? There doesn't seem to be a spec community where I can ask the question.

Find after in strings?

Maybe this is a dumb question - and often Iâm surprised when asking these, but why is there no way to âfind afterâ a string. I find it rather boring to try and parse a string, after a known marker - thus: (loc := aString findString: âmarkerâ) > 0 ifTrue: [ loc := loc + âmarkerâ size ]. Is there a better way? This whole pattern seems very old and clunky and not smalltalk like? Couldnât we have: findAfter: aString ifAbsent: aBlock ? Or is there a whole better pattern for string searching that Iâm missing ? More Morphic snags

I have been trying to replicate the behaviour of an existing (non-Pharo, non-Smalltalk) application with Morphic. This provides grouping images in a workspace, and then switching between laying them out separately or "stacked" by double clicking on the group (or an image in it). When the group is stacked, it can be moved around as a single drag and drop operation. When the group is separated, dragging an image out of it removes it from the group. On the surface this looked like a perfect fit to the submorph tree.Â Unfortunately, as both the Morphic chapter in Pharo by Example and the intro document by Maloney make clear, if you enable double clicking (by answering true to #handlesMouseDown:), you are interfering with what Maloney calls the "default behaviour" of being able to drag a Morph around. How do I reinstate that behaviour if a group is clicked on and the double click does not happen? Neither document helps in explaining where that "default" can be found in the code. Thanks Markus

Finder blows me away again

Just sharing... I wondered if there was a better way of converting an array of strings into one string than doing this... x := #( '++' '||' '++') . x flatCollect: [ :c | c ] but it was awkward copying the array twice into Finder. So I wondered if it could do variable assignment, and it can!! i.e... Tools > Finder > Examples > then simply paste the above snippet into the textfield. cheers -ben

[gemstones] Use case for GsDevKit_home

I have another project coming up, and I have free reign over the tech stack. I am gonna use Pharo, but I'd like to spend my up front time on this project figuring out the things I usually wait until the end to do. One of these issues is setting up gemstones. I would like to use GsDevKit_home, but I want to make sure that the use case I am envisioning is in keeping what this package is set up to do. My vision is something like: - Deploy a stone to remote production server. - Develop in the latest version of Pharo on my local machine, keeping my project in git. - When it's time to deploy, use tODE client to tell the production server to grab the latest code, and we're done. Does this sound reasonable? Also, one thing that I find invaluable in troubleshooting applications written using relational databases is to be able to be able to just dump the production database and load it up on my local machine. Is this possible using gemstones? [GsDevKit_home] Is this project still the way to set up Gemstone?

I am spending some time learning how gemstone works, and using this project as a starting point. When trying to create a stone using either 3.3.0 or 3.4.0, I get the following error at the very end. Morphic question

Years ago, I asked a Morphic question here and in response was kindly provided with the code snippet at the bottom, which I puttered around with and it eventually led me to puttingsome useful functionality together, so thanks again.Â I came across again now and as I played around with it, there is a question that I can't work out, silly as it may seem: in the example, the circle shows standard drag-and-drop behaviour, while the orange Morph "sticks" to the mouse once clicked and has to be clicked again to be dropped off.Â I could not work out where (i.e., which method) that difference in behaviour comes from. It's not due to the order of processing; adding the CircleMorph second doesn't change things. Any ideas? Notably, when I run the #exampleCircleMorph class method, the CircleMorph that opens on the screen does not show this behaviour, it "sticks" to the mouse in the same way as the orange Morph. Pharo 7.0.3 Seaside 3

Hey all, Apologies if this one has been done to death. I am on windows 10. Just downloaded a fresh image, 7.0.3 and tried loading Seaside 3 from the catalogue browser. I get the 'Seaside 3 has not been marked as tested for Pharo 7.0.3' dialog but press Yes to continue. It looks like it starts to load packages (I get a progress bar flashing up) but then Pharo just closes. I can't see any error log. TelePharo / Seamless Bitmaps are all 0s

Hi Denis, If I print: remotePharo evaluate: [ Array withAll: #(42 42 42) ] "==> #(42 42 42)" which is obviously correct, but: remotePharo evaluate: [ Bitmap withAll: #(42 42 42) ] gives me a bitmap with all zeroes (running it locally does the expected thing). I can see that the bitmap is being created correctly on the server, but by the time it gets back the values have been lost (all converted to 0s). If I change the Bitmap>>seamlessDefaultTransferStrategy for the Bitmap to #defaultByReference I can correctly access the values (just for debugging, by reference isn't practical for the real system). Any hints on where to look? Thanks again, Alistair
