Autocompletion

I managed to find some time to progress with my Smalltalk / Pharo learning and am going through the Spec booklet. I noticed that autocompletion most of the times works excellent, sometimes it struggles. For instance, if you prepare CustomerSatisfaction >> initializeWidgets buttonBad := self instantiate: ButtonPresenter. and then start to write buttonBad label: ... in the same method, the #label: selector is found immediately. However, if you say CustomerSatisfaction >> initializeWidgets buttonBad := self newButton. where ComposablePresenter >> newButton ^ self instantiate: ButtonPresenter and inherited by CustomerSatisfaction, then the #label: selector is not found by autocompleter (in the menu of choices). I'm just curious why is that so. For a novice, autocompleter is a life saver :-) Best wishes, Tomaz

SETT Commit per bundle/package

Hi, I don't know if anybody is using SETT to migrate from VW's Store to a Tonel repository, but I'm trying to pull back to Pharo a few packages I moved to VW and continued to maintain there. I don't understand why SETT creates a commit on a "per pundle" (package/bundle) basis. What would be the approach to get a lot of packages working together? E.g. MyPackage-Core, MyPackage-Glorp, MyPackage-Tests, etc. Should MyPackage be a Bundle instead? Regards, Esteban A. Maringolo

How to visit over packages, classes, methods (all types)

Hi - is there a way to iterate over all the code in a package (or class or baseline) in a generic way (to pretty print out class definitions, and methods - including extensions ). I was kind of hoping that with TonelWriter and Fileout and Critics that we would have a generic visitor mechanism but it seems that all of them just implemented it again - which misses a big opportunity for refactoring so that when you want to reason/print/manipulate code - it would be more straight forward. Is there anything/anyone addressing this ? Or maybe Iâve missed an obvious trick somewhere? Tim Sent from my iPhone

Introduction GSoC 2019

Hello, I am Nina, and I am a student from Serbia. Currently I am on the second year, of my master studies in Computer science. I have been working with Pharo for more than a year now. As a project in one of my classes, I was implementing a program that parses graphs and makes a visualization of them. Last semester I followed MOOC for Pharo. A couple of days ago, I was fortunate enough to be accepted for this year Google Summer of Code. The project I will be working on is called *Graph library with layouting algorithm*. What I will do is implement the graph structure with all necessary parts in one separate library. Beside that I will include layouthing algorithms. Some of which are already implemented as a part of some other projects and packages, those I will pull out. For the other ones, I will be using doctoral dissertation from Vaderna Renata titled *Algorithms and a language for the support of automatically laying out diagram elements*. Can I code a web browser in a Pharo GUI window (Morphic or other)?

Hi, for a project I need this kind of program: 1. client side only 2. must be able to programmatically show a web browser in a window (Morphic??); only local content will be shown 3. must also be able to show other windows, containing simple games Now, I guess that 1 and 3 are possible straight away, but I am unsure about option 2. I found out that there are a few ways to do it: - using C#, which has: - standard web browser control out-of-the-box - third-party open source chromium web browser component - using Java, which (afaict) is a coding effort, but possible anyway That saiud, since I'd very much like to start using Pharo for more tasks (just starting) I wonder if Pharo has something to offer in this case. Issues with build: 160, commit: b84a1e1 of the Pharo 7.0.3 image?

Hi, I just launched a new Pharo 7.0 - 32bit (stable) from the pharo launcher. Got back an image from build: 160, commit: b84a1e1 First issue I noticed was a broken (?) component in the Wellcome screen (red block with yelllow border and diagonals). Then, after insalling Seaside and trying to add a new adaptor (via the Seaside launcher), an instance of MenuItemPresenter did not understand #isEnabled. No of these issues are present in a clean image obtained with the zeroconf script (build: 158, commit: 0903ade image). Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Do templates update automatically when a new build is available? Yours, Alejandro

Loading Gettext on already installed Seaside

Hi, I have a Pharo 7.0 image with Seaside installed on it. Now i want to add Gettext but i'm not able to do it yet. Metacello new baseline:'Seaside3'; repository: 'github://SeasideSt/Seaside:master/repository'; load: #('Seaside-Gettext-Core' 'Seaside-Gettext-Examples') Fail because 'Seaside-Gettext-Core' name not found. More likely because BaselineOfSeaside3>>baselinegettext: does not include a tag for Pharo 7. TestCases and forked processes in TestResource don't play well

Hi, I'm developing a web application using (amongst others) WebSockets. To prevent test methods from becoming too big and slow I created a TestCase with a TestResource containing my web application instance. After the first test method is run, the WebSocket is closed unexpectedly and automagically. It turns out that all forked processes are terminated when a TestCase has executed a test method. What would be the proper way to prevent these forked processes from terminating after a single test method? Or am I missing something/doing something wrong? TestExecutionEnvironment>>#checkForkedProcesses is responsible for terminating any (non failed) processes. It is executed after TestExecutionEnvironment>>#runTestCaseSafelly: [sic: this should be #runTestCaseSafely:]. A possible solution might be to check whether the Context in which a forked process was created has the #setUp method of a TestResource of the TestCase (you still with me ;-) in its Context chain. If that is the case, the process is probably forked for a reason. This forked process does have to be terminated when all TestCases have finished of course (when the TestResource does #tearDown). IFF the forked processes should be kept alive during the execution of all TestCase methods, does the suggested solution above seem logical or are there any (better) alternatives? An IPFS interface for Pharo

Hi everyone, Over the last weeks I have started to explore IPFS more seriously. IPFS, the Inter-Planetary File System, is supposed to be the next-generation Web: a decentralized content-addressed database. Since there is nothing better then Pharo for exploring databases, I have started to write an IPFS interface to Pharo: https://github.com/khinsen/ipfs-pharo It connects to a local IPFS server, so you have to have one running. It's surprisingly straightforward to install and configure, unless you have to fight with firewalls that block IPFS traffic. Feedback of any kind is welcome! Cheers, Konrad.
