Hi Everyone, As far as I can tell, JPEGReadWriter in Pharo 7 doesn't read (or write) the image metadata, e.g. title, keywords, exposure time, etc. Is anyone aware of a package that does? Thanks! Alistair

Hi all, I do some experiments with iCal. For now I serve a full calendar over HTTP. Not bad, but it is read only. Iâd like to try CalDAV. I was looking for it, and also webDAV. Gofer it smalltalkhubUser: 'UdoSchneider' project: 'FileSystemNetwork'; configuration; load. #ConfigurationOfFileSystemNetwork asClass project stableVersion load: 'Webdav' Iâve found the project of Udo, but it doesnât load on P8. I think this is due to the stream refactoring. Right now the image hung. Iâll try maybe to load it manually. But I was wondering oof there were other alternatives ? TIA, CÃ©drick

The most emblematic one for the general public emerged in 2005 under the name of âProject Natalâ taken up and democratized by Microsoft in its latest version called âAzure Kinectâ (2019). In 2012, for the first time, the team used an ultra-short focal projector to project a game board on a table. In addition, the spatial configuration of the actors favors social interactions.Â But until today, manual input by the facilitator of the decisions taken by the players remains necessary, which reduces the fluidity and spontaneity of interactions. Rounding in Floats

Hi, Continuing with my issues with decimals, I'm having one issue that is not clear to me why it happens. If I do: (9.1 + (-2.0)) roundTo: 0.1. "7.1000000000000005" I expect to get a single decimal Float (rounded with whatever precision, but a single decimal). Even if I do something like this: 7.1 roundTo: 0.1 It gives the wrong result. In VW and VAST it provides the right result. (9.1 + (-2.0)) roundTo: 0.1 "7.1" In Dolphin it also returns the wrong result, it seems to use the same algorithm to round it. Is this a bug? Esteban A. NeoCSVReader and wrong number of fieldAccessors

Happy new year to all of you! May 2021 be an increasingly less crazy year than 2020... I have a question that sounds a bit strange, but we have two effects with NeoCSVReader related to wrong definitions of the reader. One effect is that reading a Stream #upToEnd leads to an endless loop, the other is that the Reader produces twice as many objects as there are lines in the file that is being read. In both scenarios, the reason is that the CSV Reader has a wrong number of column definitions. Of course that is my fault: why do I feed a "malformed" CSV file to poor NeoCSVReader? Let me explain: we have a few import interfaces which end users can define using a more or less nice assistant in our Application. The CSV files they upload to our App come from third parties like payment providers, banks and other sources. These change their file structures whenever they feel like it and never tell anybody. So a CSV import that may have been working for years may one day tear a whole web server image down because of a wrong number of fieldAccessors. This is bad on many levels. You can easily try the doubling effect at home: define a working CSV Reader and comment out one of the addField: commands before you use the NeoCSVReader to parse a CSV file. Say your CSV file has 3 lines with 4 columns each. If you remove one of the fieldAccessors, an #upToEnd will yoield an Array of 6 objects rather than 3. I haven't found the reason for the cases where this leads to an endless loop, but at least this one is clear... I *guess* this is due to the way #readEndOfLine is implemented. It seems to not peek forward to the end of the line. I have the gut feeling #peekChar should peek instead of reading the #next character form the input Stream, but #peekChar has too many senders to just go ahead and mess with it ;-) So I wonder if there are any tried approaches to this problem. One thing I might do is not use #upToEnd, but read each line using PositionableStream>>#nextLine and first check each line if the number of separators matches the number of fieldAccessors minus 1 (and go through the hoops of handling separators in quoted fields and such...). Only if that test succeeds, I would then hand a Stream with the whole line to the reader and do a #next. This will, however, mean a lot of extra cycles for large files. Of course I could do this only for some lines, maybe just the first one. Whatever. But somehow I have the feeling I should get an exception telling me the line is not compatible to the Reader's definition or such. Or #readAtEndOrEndOfLine should just walk the line to the end and ignore the rest of the line, returnong an incomplete object.... Maybe I am just missing the right setting or switch? What best practices did you guys come up with for such problems? Thanks in advance, Joachim

Creating an SDL (OSWindow) window without showing the pharo interface

Does anyone know how to get an OSWindow window to open from Pharo without showing the pharo IDE? I thought the headless VM might do this. So I downloaded the latest headless VM and Pharo 9. Then if I issue the command line / pharo-ui Pharo.image eval OSWindowWorldMorph new open/ I get an SDL window but also the pharo user interface which I don't want. But if I try /pharo Pharo.image --no-quit eval OSWindowWorldMorph new open/ nothing happens. Pharo runs but nothing shows up. I expected just to get the SDL window. Can this be done in pharo? [ANN] Freezing Pharo 9 development right now :)

Hi, So, today I was checking how much it is missing for release and what is our status, and I realized if we do not freeze now, we will never release in a reasonable time. So, even if there are a couple of cleanups and that to still do that should happen before, I will declare that Pharo 9.0 enters in freeze Pharo 9.0 right now (and I will sneak the cleanups anyway, but being more careful). What does this means? No more features, just bugfixes No more fixes of things that can wait until Pharo 10 In two weeks I will open the Pharo 10 development branch, up to then, please help fixing what's missing (which is a lot) ! SQLite3 primitiveFailed after FFI call

Hi all, I'm having a strange issue when executing a query with the SQLite3 driver (via GLORP). Announcements - and whether its bad to check if a subscription would be handled?

Hi everyone - Iâve always thought the article on announcements many years ago was very cool - and we donât seem to use them as much as we could (but equally they arenât a panacea to be overused everywhere either - and they do get used in Pharo to some extent). Anyway, Iâve been playing around with CodeParadise (CP is a very cool project, and Erik is very supportive and thinking about how to write web apps a different wayâ¦ Iâm fascinated), And - CP uses announcements as mechanism to send events from the View Client (in a web browser) to a Presenter on the server (which makes total sense). In taking things for a spin, I hit an interesting problem on how in a web component world, you should display a spelling test of words - e.g. SpellingTest â has many â> SpellingWord(s). Initially I bunged it all in a single presenter with its associated view, and it was a bit messy, and Erik guided me down a route (that CP nicely supports) - that my SpellingTest view should have the name/date of the test as well as an add word input field, but the list of current Words (which I had bunged into a table) - were actually more elegant as sub-components - hence a WordView - which renders a single word in a DIV, and for the edit screen I was creating, a Delete button next to the word (so you could delete it). So a 1 to many relationship essentials. This is where the announcements kick in (and lead to my ultimate question). When you click the Delete button, if I use a sub component - my view will generate a DeleteWordAnnouncement - which gets fed to my SpellingWordPresenter - however words in this sense donât naturally know their parent (the SpellingTest) - and its the parent test that has a #deleteWord: method. Iâve been taking with Erik, on different ways to elegantly handle this. a) you could change the model so words know their parent (in my case, Iâm using a 3rd party model for Flashcards, and they just donât know this - and adapting them would be a nuisance b) my TestPresenter could listen to announcements on the WordPresenter - and I could get some communications between presenters (although normally the Presenters just get events from Views, and pure domain models - so it feels a bit abnormal to consider another Presenter as a sort of model - but I could live with this c) given the composable nature of views/presenters (and CP is base on a WebComponent model) - you could bubble up Announcements, so that if an event isnât handled by a viewâs immediate presenter, you could re-route it to the parent of the View (the component owner) and see if itâs presenter could do something. I think (c) has a certain expectation to it - in fact when I converted my initial one-presenter attempt into components, I still had listener code in my TestPresenter that was expecting to get a deleteWord announcement and I was initially surprised that I wasnât getting it (as it was now just going to the Word component I had refactored out). So I wonder if others here would expect things to work this way too (and are there other examples in the wild that lead you here - or scare you away from this?). Back to my Announcement question - if C is a good idea - why doesnât the Announcer class let you check if if will handle a particular announcement? The API has #hasSubscriber: and #hasSubscriberClass: , but its missing: hasSubscriptionsHandling: anAnnouncement "Answer true if I have any subcribers to anAnnouncement" ^(registry subscriptionsHandling: anAnnouncement ) notEmpty And I am wondering if this is because it's a bad thing to expect to be able to check? In my case above, I would want to do this to know if CP should instead try announcing a message to a parent presenter because the current presenter wonât handle it. In my example above, my WordComponentView will broadcast that the delete button was clicked, but its actually a parent view which would reasonably want to listen to this kind of event and process the delete. And in a many words scenario (the Test has many words), its unrealistic for the parent to register to listen to each word component individually (in fact CP sort of hides this from you), however if you could listen to an event in your TestView, it seems to come out quite nicely - and looks a bit like this: viewCreated super viewCreated. self view when: CpNavigationAnnouncement do: [ :action | self model goto: action location ]; when: CpAddWordAnnouncement do: [ :action | self addWord: action data ]; when: CpDeleteWordAnnouncement do: [ :action | self deleteWord: action data ]. <â this is the one Iâm talking about So Iâm curious on the overall thought process here, but in particular whether I should even submit a PR on Announcer for #hasSubscriptionsHandling: ? Tabular for Pharo 9 and Git line ending conventions

Hi, I made the Tabular tests to run on Pharo 9: https://github.com/bpieber/Tabular However, due to different line endings all lines of all touched methods are shown as changed: https://github.com/VincentBlondeau/Tabular/compare/master...bpieber:master The reason seems to be that in the repository the files use CRLF line endings while on my Mac the line endings are converted to LF. I experimented with all settings of core.autocrlf (true, false, and input). However, the result was always the same. Is there any way I can solve this problem? Is there a convention which line endings Pharo projects should have in the repository on GitHub? Cheers, Bernhard

Hello, I am working on a paper about different types of library update (also known as library migration). And I would like to know if you have any experience that I could document. Most modern software depends on many external libraries. And when one of those libraries releases a new version, developers have to update their code according to the changes (e.g. stop using deprecated features, make use of the new functionality, replace old classes with new ones, etc.). Please let me know if you have ever updated your software to a new version of an external library. This may include Pharo libraries (for example, Spec -> Spec2, Roassal2 -> Roassal3, etc.), Java libraries (Maven, Xerces, Log4j, etc.), JavaScript, Python, or any other programming language. I would like to know how much time did it take you to update your code, what kind of changes did you have to make, what problems did you encounter, where did you look for the information on what was changed. I have finally given up on trying to sort this out. Under both Windows Server 2012 and Windows 10 my Pharo image just exits leaving nothing, not even a crash file. Hence, I have fixed my MacBookAir so that it stays alive with the lid down and I am now using that as my Seaside server. It has been up for the last 4 days so it seems that this is a Windows only problem and (hopefully) not my code. Comparing source code declarations with #=

Hi, I want to compare Pharo (8) source code definitions. One source is already "filed in" the image and the other source is in a .st file in chunk format (the result of a file out). I've attached in this mail an example for reproducibility. In my search for a simple equality operator, I found that MCSnapshot(s) understand #= so it could be used like this: | imageSnapshot fileSnapshot | 'MySampleClass.st' asFileReference fileIn. imageSnapshot := (RPackageOrganizer default packageOf: MySampleClass) mcPackage snapshot. fileSnapshot := (MCStReader on: 'MySampleClass.st' asFileReference readStream) snapshot. imageSnapshot = fileSnapshot. But to my surprise, the file snapshot from MCStReader is not reading the class definitions, so comparing them should answer <true> (assuming nothing has been modified) but it always returns <false>. I've also seen that both Ring chunk importers do not read methods. (RingChunkImporter fromStream: 'MySampleClass.st' asFileReference readStream) packages collect: #allMethods. (RGChunkImporter fromStream: 'MySampleClass.st' asFileReference readStream) packages collect: #allMethods. The only "solution" I've found so far is to read into CodeChunk's and then implement the #= CodeImporter chunksFromFileNamed: 'MySampleClass.st'. But I don't like it and also I think there should be a clever way to compare source between image and .st declarations. Any ideas? HernÃ¡n

Segfault with ZnClient and https

Hi, I have trouble with latest Fedora 33, plain installation and Pharo 8.0 stable, 64 bit. When I try a ZnClient new url: 'https://something..'; get. The image segfaults. Last lines from log are: primitiveSSL:setStringProperty:toValue: atAllPut: atAllPut: primitiveSSL:connect:startingAt:count:into: stack page bytes 8192 available headroom 5576 minimum unused headroom 5952 --- It seems libssl and libcrypto is bundled togheter with Pharo, looks like version 1.0.0. I then try to compile openssl with 1.0.0-stable which I build myself, but when replacing the Pharo-libs with my own I get the message that I am using a too old tls-version error. I am a little confused on what is happening here. Do anyone have a clue? Hello, I need your help to recommend some projects that I can use in my study of transforming deprecations. As many of you know, Pharo supports a very powerful concept of "transforming" deprecations. You can deprecate a method, providing a transformation rule. Then when a client application calls the deprecated method, the call-site will be automatically rewritten to use the new API. Here is an example of a transforming deprecation: Collection >> includesAllOf: values self deprecated: âUse #includesAll: insteadâ transformWith: â`@rec includesAllOf: `@argâ -> â`@rec includesAll: `@argâ. ^ self includesAll: values You can read more about transforming deprecations in my blog post: https://blog.oleks.fr/deprewriter I am working on a tool that can analyse the commit history of a project and recommend deprecations and transformation rules that can be inserted before the release. It works like this: 1. Collect all commits between two releases of a project 2. Mine those commits to identify method call replacements (deletions and additions) that happen frequently 3. Infer the mapping between the methods of the old and new API 4. Recommend deprecations and generate transformation rules I have validated my approach on Pharo, Moose, Pillar, Famix, and DataFrame projects. Now I am looking for other projects that could benefit from recommended deprecations and could be used in my study. *Required:* - open source project with accessible commit history (e.g. public git repository) - written in Pharo (although if you know projects in other languages that could be interesting for my study, please let me know about them as well) *Prefered:* - ongoing development - multiple releases - has users (other projects that depend on it) If you have some projects in mind, please let me know about them! Postgres P3 Driver in seaside/web apps - strategy for "prepare:"

Hi using the P3 Postgres driver what is the optimised way of using the following in a seaside/web application statement := client prepare: ... statement execute: statement close. Sven readme on the drivers page "prepared statements ... need to be closed, prepared statement exist ... single session / connection ..." Typically in a desktop app I would fire the "prepare" statements(s) once when open the particular UI / window (say typically 2 or 3 statements in a UI) and then "close" when I exit How does this work in a multi-tabbed browser app lets say I open a tab with a particular UI and fire the "prepare" statement now what if the tab idles for too long - and then i press send/save. Whats the easiest/cheapest way to run a Pharo web app in 2021?

Hi everyone - its been a few year since I last hosted a little Pharo web app - and the last time I did, Sven pointed me to DigitalOcean and creating a tiny instance and configuring an Ubuntu server and then copying a pharo image on to that. It recall it wasnât too bad, albeit a bit fiddlyâ¦ Now several years later - I canât recall the exact steps, and vaguely recall there was something about 32bit vs 64bit setup etc - but am wondering if things have advanced a bit and whether its much simpler these days? Iâve seen references to Docker images for Pharo, and am wondering if now that is a prime time way to easily get a small demo application up and running with minimal fuss. Does anyone have advice - or something to point me to? Ideally I want to hook something up in Gitlab CI do deploy to this thing automatically (this is where I got to a few years ago - but in picking things back up I am hoping this has all got much simpler). However, to provide some perspective, we're happily running Pharo in production on a (self-managed) VPS on Hetzner Cloud (which uses 100% green energy!). We use our own adaptation of Pharo server tools based on Sven's original work:Â https://github.com/objectguild/pharo-server-tools. We started with running Pharo 7.0 and have since upgraded to Pharo 8.0. Some experience with Linux command line is certainly welcome, but it should be fairly easy to get this going. Mind you, the README is (unfortunately) _not_ up to date. Regarding Docker, I don't have much experience myself. I've only used it a couple of times to troubleshoot smalltalkCI issues, never for running a Pharo server application. Hope this is of some use to you or others. Pharo-IOT Remote Dev connection Issue

Hi, I have a PharoThings environment which Iâm updating to version 0.3.2 and keep hitting the following DNU error when runningâ¦ remotePharo := TlpRemoteIDE connectTo: (TCPAddress ip: ip port: 40423). â¦from the Mac client to the pi server (image below). A SeamlessDefaultRequestContext does not understand #ownBytes: â¦which is correct - it does not :) Iâm guessing #materializeObject in the code just before the error, should have answered a SeamlessRequest. The git page claims itâs building successfully, and Iâve tried re-installing both the client on the Mac and the server on the pi, and get the same error each time. Is this a known error? Problem with Pharo 9 - repositories missing

Hi everyone. I have a simple talk, or so I thought. I am trying to port a Mac Pharo/Seaside project to either a Windows 2012 server or to a Windows 10 laptop. I have set up my git credentials and that all works fine. However, when I install either 8.0 or 9.0 on my Windows 10 laptop it shows he following Repositories -- status Pharo Local repository missing Pharo-spec2 Local repository missing Pharo-newtools Local repository missing Iceberg Local repository missing Libgit-pharo-bindings Local repository missing tonel Local repository missing What on earth is going on here as installing Pharo on my Mac was seamless. I have to get the project onto a Windows machine as these are the only servers that I have. I really can't be this difficult, can it? How do I get out of this mess, given that that is a clean install? David Totally Objects

Understanding how to best structure branches to contribute to a 3rd party project

Hi Everyone - I tried asking this on Discord, but I think it got a bit lost - and perhaps for more philosophical questions, here is better. So - Iâm wondering what is the recommended way to work with another project you want to contribute to (in my case CodeParasides). So I know I can fork it and put the fork in my baseline. But Iâm assuming contributions are best done discretely on a branch per proposal (this seems to be the Pharo way - and it makes sense for ease of understanding), but if you have a few of these contributions in play (while the maintainer is evaluating them) would you then have your own âcombinationâ branch to consolidate all those fixes until they get merged in? Iâve started to try this, but merging between branches gets a bit tricky - a few times now it seems that Iceberg shows me misleading info on what is being added/removed (it always looks like my changes are going to be removed, when if fact they get added - so its a bit of a leap of faith on this). So Iâm wondering if Iâm overcomplicating things - or whether this is the suggested way to work with another project? Tim

Problem installing Seaside on Windows

Hi everyone. I have been developing a new web site using Seaside on my M1 MacBookAir and I have had no issues. To deploy it, I have to install Pharo on either a Windows 10 or a Windows Server 2012 server. Pharo has installed on both without any issues. However, I am having problems installing Seaside. I have Pharo 8.0 installed on both (64 bit version). If I try and install from the Catalog, I get the following error in the Transcript. IceGenericError: Failed to stat file 'C:/Users/david/Documents/Pharo/images/Pharo 8.0 - 64bit (stable)/pharo-local. If I try using Monticello, I get the following: Metacello new baseline:'Seaside3'; repository: 'github://SeasideSt/Seaside:master/repository'; load I got an error while cloning: There was an authentication error while trying to execute the operation: . This happens usually because you didn't provide a valid set of credentials. You may fix this problem in different ways: 1. adding your keys to ssh-agent, executing ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa in your command line. 2. adding your keys in settings (open settings browser search for "Use custom SSH keys" and add your public and private keys). 3. using HTTPS instead SSH (Just use an url in the form HTTPS://etc.git) I will try to clone the HTTPS variant. How to get top level menu item shortcuts to work?

Hi - I tried asking this on Discord, but it got lost in the day to day stuff - so trying here. I am a bit confused how Keyboard shortcuts work in P8 for World menus. I have a method with the <worldMenu> pragma, and I get aBuilder, and I create a top level menu item. Then to add a child, it seems that I just create a new #item: and set its #parent: to the new id I've created (all good), and then I set #keyText: 'r, o' and while it shows a menu item with CMD-RO in its text, the keystroke doesn't seem to work. I've tried different options even, 'o, x' but none of them trigger - so I must be missing something? Anyone know? My code looks like this (menuId = #Paradise - the top level menu item I have created) | menuId | (aBuilder item: (menuId := #Paradise)) order: 4.0; target: self; help: 'Tools to support Code Paradise projects'. (aBuilder item: #'Reload...') parent: menuId; help: 'Clear the session for a web application, and reload its''s page'; order: 15; keyText: 'r, r'; icon: (self iconNamed: #smallUpdate); action: [ self resetSession ].
