Thanks, Stephane. I am aware of this now most comfortable possibility to gain access to the newest image. I want to prepare to be able to offer feedback when making changes while working with it; esp. reporting on glitches, and, possibly, code contributions. As of my understanding, up-to-date local repositories in sync with the image are neccessary to do that. Am I wrong? Pharo9 GLORP + MySQL

Hi, Iâm new to the Pharo users mailing list and to Pharo in general, too. My goal is to make a CRUD web application using Seaside, Magritte, GLORP and MariaDB (MySQL-like RDBMS). I already test-drove GLORP with PostgreSQL-P3, with success. But I need MariaDB because it implements SQL:2011 (which Postgres lacks currently) thus enabling the use of system-versioned and bi-temporal tables. Currently I donât need GLORP to handle any of the SQL:2011 features as the versioning would be invisible to the web app, it is needed only for auditing purposes. I tried to make the system work be installing the MySQL driver into a fresh Pharo9 image: Metacello new repository: 'github://pharo-rdbms/Pharo-MySQL'; baseline: 'MySQL'; load Since the package 'MySQL-Glorp' didn't load, I installed it manually from github. (Sorry but I'm noob to work with baselines, Iceberg, Monticello and such.) Then loaded GLORP: Metacello new repository: 'github://pharo-rdbms/glorp'; baseline: 'Glorp'; load. Then I tried to do everything in a similar manner to how I did it with P3: login := Login new database: MySQLPlatform new; username: 'root'; password: '\*\*\*\*'; host: '<my host>'; port: '3306'; databaseName: 'test'. accessor := DatabaseAccessor forLogin: login. accessor login. accessor isLoggedIn. >>> true Yay, very nice. Then: session := GlorpBookDescriptorSystem sessionForLogin: login. \*GlorpBookDescriptorSystem is subclass of DescriptorSystem. It comes from the demo from pharobooks with an example on how to use GLORP with P3. It contains the demo class models, descriptors and table definitions. Platform studies

Hi all. I'm enjoying reading some books of the Platform Studies series by the MIT Press (https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/series/platform-studies) Specifically, I'm reading "The future was here" about the Amiga and "Racing the Beam" about the Atari VCS. What I like about these books is how they try to study the relationships between the hardware and software design of these computing platforms and the creative works produced on these systems. The books study these media from the technical point of view, but also deep into their social and cultural aspects. I'd like this kind of critical study about the Smalltalk platform. Do you know about any book or research in this style? Thank you. ~ Rafael Luque

For our December meeting, Florin Mateoc will show us JsSqueak ( https://github.com/fmateoc/JsSqueak ), a JavaScript implementation of (JavaScript compiled) Squeak. Whereas SqueakJS or TruffleSqueak are implementations of the Squeak stack VM which run the Squeak bytecodes, JsSqueak compiles all the Squeak code to JavaScript (including the VM plugins), it exports the image state as one big JavaScript storeString, and then loads them, and runs the JavaScript implemented minimal VM (mostly primitives) and the JavaScript-translated Squeak methods as one combined JavaScript application. The compiled JavaScript application can be run either in a browser or in Node.js While JavaScript, especially with its newest additions, is a very powerful language, which allows us to implement most Smalltalk-specific features (e.g. processes/green threads are implemented using generator functions and recursive yield* for all invocations, DNU is implemented using proxies and proto manipulation, the Smalltalk parallel class hierarchy is implemented using JavaScript classes with static properties and their parallel prototypes hierarchy, weak classes are implemented using JavaScript WeakRef instances in their (weak) slots), one obvious challenge is implementing contexts. Since we compile Squeak classes to JavaScript classes, Squeak methods to JavaScript methods (and class-side Squeak methods to static JavaScript methods), the code runs on the native JavaScript call stack, and we do not have a mapping between the JavaScript function activations and reified contexts. Nevertheless, it turns out that, by providing specialized implementations for various aspects that are implemented using contexts/stack walking in Squeak, we can actually run almost all Squeak code as-is. An Emacs <-> Pharo bridge (unidirectional at first)

Hi list, I'm looking for help on doing something VERY un-smalltalkish with Pharo... let me explain. I am working on several variants of this way of controlling external programs with Emacs: http://angg.twu.net/LATEX/2021emacsconf.pdf The slides - link above - are the best way to understand how it works, but there's mode info here: http://angg.twu.net/emacsconf2021.html The method above only works with programs that have REPLs that can be run in terminals, but I have some variants of it that let me send commands - single-line or multi-line - to external programs that only have GUIs. In one of these variant the external program listens to the signals SIGUSR1s and SIGUSR2s, and initially what it does when it receives these signals is: on SIGUSR1: print the contents of the file /tmp/bridge-data on SIGUSR2: eval the contents of the file /tmp/bridge-data The action of SIGUSR2 can be used to redefine the action fo SIGUSR1. Perhaps I'm just slow, but it wasn't until last night when I was reading on Object Pascal and there was an example: type TProjector = class(TTelevision) Brightness, Temperature: Integer; procedure Focus(Length: Single); end; Then it finally clicked with me that "var1" and "var2" under instance variables in Smalltalk would be like the method "Focus" in Object Pascal. Is that correct, or am I still not getting it? ```

UFFI callback, getting function pointer

Dear all, I'm constructing a rudimentary webview library for Pharo with UFFI (available here [https://github.com/eftomi/Pharo-Webview](https://github.com/eftomi/Pharo-We… "https://github.com/eftomi/Pharo-Webview")). For now, the basic things work under Windows. Iâm using âa tiny cross-platform webview libraryâ available at [https://github.com/webview/webview](https://github.com/webview/webview "https://github.com/webview/webview"). One of the functions in the dll allows to register a C function to act as a callback and that can be used as a function in javascript, which is convenient for webview presenter - main program communication. This function has the signature: ``` extern void webview_bind(webview_t w, const char *name, void (*fn)(const char *seq, const char *req, void *arg), void *arg); ``` fn is the callback function. Is there any way to make a ffiCall description of this kind of signature, where fn would be an address of the callback in Pharo? Thanks and best wishes,\ Tomaz
