Trying to understand Smallapack

Hello, I have installed Smallapack into Pharo 7.0.3. Thanks Nicholas. I am very unsure on my use of Smallapack. I am not a mathematician or scientist. However the only part of Smallapack I am trying to use at the moment is something that wouldÂ be 64bit and compare to FloatArray so that I can do some simple accessing, slicing, sum, and average on the array. Here is some sample code I wrote just to play in a playground. I have an ExternalDoubleArray, LapackDGEMatrix, and a FloatArray samples. Accessing MySQL or MariaDB from Pharo7 Smalltalk

There is the âGarageâ addon Package for Pharo that provides a relatively simple interface to several relational databases including MySQL (and the nearly identical MariaDB). Unfortunately, the installation instruction at http://guillep.github.io/DBXTalk/garage/installation.html <http://guillep.github.io/DBXTalk/garage/installation.html> seems to be buggy. At least it did not work for me. Therefore I wrote this step by step description how I finally had success. How to make Metacello ignore package cache?

Hi guys, Is there any way to tell Metacello to ignore the local package cache after a failed load? Say I tried to load: Metacello new configuration: 'MyConfig'; repository: 'github://hernanmd/MyPackage'; load. Then I figure the "repository" path is missing and I add it: Metacello new configuration: 'MyConfig'; repository: 'github://hernanmd/MyPackage/repository'; load. And I get this exception: Could not resolve: ConfigurationOfMyConfig [ConfigurationOfMyConfig] in D:\Hernan\Pharo703\pharo-local\package-cache https://github.com/hernanmd/MyPackage.git[master] It doesn't matter if I use #onConflictUseIncoming or MetacelloPlatform current defaultPackageCache flushCache. I cannot find a way to specify to ignore the cache. Any ideas? Cheers, HernÃ¡n

How do you rotate a morph by degrees

I am trying to rotate an instance of a [Transformation morph]. I am sending an "angle:" message, which should work since "angle:" is listed as a method in it's parent class, yet when I sent a message, it claims "it does not understand #angle". Shouldn't messagepassing forward the message to it's parent class? - Steve

Baseline subclasses

Iâm trying to customize our current project with multiple baselines meaning BaselineOfCoreProduct and BaselineOfWhiteLabelProduct. The latter is a subclass of the former. My problem is that I donât know which way to choose for loading because Metacello new baseline: #WhiteLabelProduct load that does not work if BaselineOfCoreProduct is in its own package because that is not loaded but the superclass is in there. I saw that I can provide an array to baseline: but regardless in which order I put them the wrong is always loaded first. So order of the array seem not to matter. I could still load BaselineOfCoreProduct first and then BaselineOfWhiteLabelProduct but I would like to have a better way of doing. I could also image putting both baselines in the same package but I donât know how to use Metacello to say it should load a package name and use another named Baseline. Any help appreciated, Norbert

Deep Recursion break/protection

Hi, Is there a way to add deep recursion protection to the system? eg. RecursiveObject>>#recurse self recurse So calling `RecursiveObject new recurse` in Dolphin raises an exception right away... Throws the following error with this stack: ProcessorScheduler>>stackOverflow: [] in ProcessorScheduler>>vmi:list:no:with: BlockClosure>>ifCurtailed: ProcessorScheduler>>vmi:list:no:with: RecursiveObject>>recurse RecursiveObject>>recurse In Pharo it goes forever until it hits the memory limit (3.6GiB), at which point doing an Alt+. is useless and you have to kill the VM. The example is pretty simple, but when doing Seaside rendering, it is easy to miss some return, causing the receiver to render recursively, turning your image useless. e.g. MyComponent>>renderContentOn: html html render: self someSubComponent MyComponent>>someSubComponent "Here I forget returning the subcomponent" someSubComponent ifNil: [someSubcomponent := OtherComponent new]. When you render MyComponent... boom, because #MyComponent>>#renderContentOn: will be called recursively. Regards, Esteban A. Maringolo

[ANN] (Re)Introducing Mars (Spec 2.0 Gtk3 bindings)

People that assisted to Pharo Days 2019 (or that follow my twitter account) already know this, but it needs to be formally announced: We are working on Spec 2.0, and it will provide not just the classic Morphic bindings but also a new option for developers: Gtk3 bindings! Why we want a Spec 2.0 with different backends? There are reasons that converged to decide us to make it: First, to provide a validated abstract Spec 2.0 that can be used with different backends, preparing Pharo to be able to switch backends without needing to recreate the full IDE from scratch each time (a problem we have partially now in our way to deprecate Morphic). Second, because we receive from different sources the requirement of having the possibility of developing real native-looking desktop applications. Yes, in moment where people talk about the cloud, SaaS and web-applications as the "next big thing" (something that is been declared since years, by the way), we believe is important to provide this, for two big reasons: Because there is still an important place for desktop applications market and most medium-size to big business still require them. Because Pharo itself is a desktop application! (And we need to provide the best experience possible on it). For us, this is a fundamental step to continue improving Pharo itself, and it matches also the work we are doing on going real-headless: Pharo users will be able to start the Morphic world, a Gtk application or the next backend to come. Why Gtk3? There are some other important players in the "native widgets scene", so why we choose Gtk3? Again, several reasons were taken into account: Gtk3 is cross platform. Yes, technically is just "native" in linux, but it works on Windows and macOS too. It is very mature and popular. It is made in plain C. Next step: tool migration The only way to know if you have covered what is needed is actually taking real-life use cases and implementing them. We have a list of tools that needs to be migrated and we are starting from them: Old GT tools will be replaced by new Spec tools (while preserving its power). Calypso UI needs to be rewritten in Spec 2.0 (it is in plain Morphic now). Pharo launcher as a standalone application is a good example of what you can do with the Gtk3 bindings. And that's it. Pharo 8.0 will come with Spec 2.0 and users will be able to benefit of it immediately :) A small screenshot of the new Inspector (WIP): Esteban
