Deploy a Pharo 8 application remotely

Hey, all.. I put together a quick REST interface to use internally here. Itâs ready to launch to a production server, and Iâm not sure how to set it up on the remote server. The current zeroconf downloads and sets up a Pharo 7 instance. What I would like to do is set up Pharo 8 on the remote server, and just replace the image and changes with mine, and start up the Teapot server remotely. I usually just use rsync to update the remote image and changes files, but I am not sure how to go about getting the correct setup to run the correct (Pharo 8) interpreter remotely. I tried doing: curl https://get.pharo.org/64/80 | bash But this brings down only the changes and image files down.. no pharo-vm. will the pharo-vm that runs pharo 7 also run pharo 8? How to zip a WideString

Hello I have a problem with text storage, to which I seem to have found a solution, but it's a bit clumsy-looking. I would be grateful for confirmation that (a) there is no neater solution, (b) I can rely on this to work - I only know that it works in a few test cases. I need to store a large number of text strings in a database. To avoid the database files becoming too large, I am thinking of zipping the strings, or at least the less frequently accessed ones. Depending on the source, some of the strings will be instances of ByteString, some of WideString (because they contain characters not representable in one byte). Storing a WideString uncompressed seems to occupy 4 bytes per character, so I decided, before thinking of compression, to store the strings utf8Encoded, which yields a ByteArray. But zipped can only be applied to a String, not a ByteArray. So my proposed solution is: For compression: myZipString := myWideString utf8Encoded asString zipped. For decompression: myOutputString := myZipString unzipped asByteArray utf8Decoded. As I said, it works in all the cases I tried, whether WideString or not, but the chains of transformations look clunky somehow. Can anyone see a neater way of doing it? And can I rely on it working, especially when I am handling foreign texts with many multi-byte characters? Thanks in advance for any help. Peter Kenny

Hi, I just published an implementation of Universal Binary JSON (UBJSON) for Pharo. https://github.com/svenvc/NeoUniversalBinaryJSON Universal Binary JSON (UBJSON) is a computer data interchange format. It is a binary form directly imitating JSON, but requiring fewer bytes of data. It aims to achieve the generality of JSON, combined with being easier and more efficient to process than JSON. http://ubjson.org https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UBJSON The size/speed/efficiency differences are minor for typical JSON payloads, especially compared with compacted JSON. The implementation is simpler, though, as there is no string escaping and no number parsing. UBJSON is making a larger difference when dealing with arrays containing numbers. Especially with ByteArrays, UBJSON makes a huge difference, since these are essentially stored natively. Sven

Number to VT_DECIMAL

Hi, I'm preparing a method to write a given Pharo's numerical value into an external variant of type VT_DECIMAL. The purpose of this type is to retain accuracy, it uses 12 bytes for "mantissa" and two bytes for a sign and a scale (i. e. the position of decimal point). What would be the best approach for the conversion, taken all the possible subclasses of class Number, that is a Float, a Fraction and the Integers, and to keep the accuracy at the same level? For instance, Fraction's numerator and denominator could be directly imputed into VT_DECIMAL's value and scale if denominator is a power of 10. What to do in other cases? Pharo: Git and GUI speed; JS widget reuse in PharoJS

Are we sure that Git is really the best way to go? Yes, it's everywhere, but its representation in Iceberg seems awkward or incomplete. I've been able to crash several Pharo VMs with routine repo operations. This is why I backed away recently from Pharo--that and the mush (see below). The other thing that keeps me planted firmly in VW is the sheer speed of it. Pharo looks generally much better, but it's mushy, and that's a problem. VW is not. Gestural dynamics are very quick, well under 100 ms latency, often less than 20 ms. I'm seeing 100, 150, and 200 ms regularly in Pharo. It's too mushy, and that slows the mind. Any developer understands this, whether he talks about it or not. So I'm wondering when the Pharo GUI will snap as well as VW. One thing that would help is to give the option of button-down selection in Settings, but even this is not enough. I tweaked the code, and made it so, but still was not happy: not enough snap and crackle. You may have acclimated and not noticed the problem, depending on how long you've been using Pharo. Otherwise, I like the Pharo DSL idea for JS. I'm working with VW's AppeX now. I'm not sure I like it, but that's mostly about finding JS to be one of the worst languages ever invented. However, the reuse and leverage is there, but at what cost in poor reading/thinking? I'm on the fence with AppeX, but will probably give it a chance. How does PharoJS deal with the JS reuse issue? There are lots of JS widgets out there that we would just like to use, but we don't want to read JS if we don't have to. There are many wheels to reinvent, or at least recode in DSL, if I understand the PharoJS scheme correctly, but I may not. Shaping

s/ported/loadable/g Guys, you may help me on this one: I suspect some classes in OpenPonk-Spec-Commands are breaking Calypso in Pharo 7 at some point on usage (not really sure, but I need to discard possibilities). Do you know any way to specify conditional loading in a Baseline method? I want to load all OpenPonk-Spec categories except OpenPonk-Spec-Commands. keyboard shortcut for switching from "instance side" to "class side"

Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut in pharo that switches from the method selectors in the "class side" to the "instance side"? I can't seem to find anything by browsing google. Ctrl-h seems to be an undocumented keystroke command to switch to "heirchy list" when the object in the browser is selected. So I would imagine there would also be something to switch to the class side/instance side. - Steve
