Browse dependencies to a package

Hi, In Pharo we have the dependency analyzer to get the dependencies of a package. But is it easily possible to find the dependencies to a package? I did not found the option in the interface. -- Cyril Ferlicot https://ferlicot.fr

Saving a Smalltalk Project
by horrido May 11, 2018

May 11, 2018

I received the following message: *We started off doing a small project in conservation in South Africa that involved tracking Rhinos in a remote GPS denied environment and ended up with some impressive building blocks for a Big Data Platform for IoT. The platform includes its own GIS subsystem and parts of an Expert System. Due to the choice made by my business partner and handful of contractors the platform ended up being built in Smalltalk on Squeak VM and the Magma Object Database. We now believe we may have the beginning of a commercial platform however its notoriously difficult to find Smalltalk developers so I am in half minds to migrate to a platform which uses a more mainstream language (Java / Python) as I have been getting some strange reactions from Angel Investors / VCs and mainstream developers. ... I wanted to ask you if you have information on how big the Smalltalk community is and whether its better to migrate to Pharo from Squeak and what types of recent industrial projects youve come across that use Smalltalk? Also I wondered if you know of any active smalltalk group in Silicon Valley and what are the best forums for professional SmallTalk development.* I would very much like to save their project as a Smalltalk project. The principal issue seems to be finding enough Smalltalk developers. I don't know if they need on-site developers or if remote developers can pass muster. I strongly suspect the former. How hard would it be to find Smalltalkers willing to work in Silicon Valley, or South Africa? What is the best response to this person? Thanks. -- Sent from: http://forum.world.st/Pharo-Smalltalk-Users-f1310670.html

Metacello load in code vs. Iceberg menu install? Can you automate remote loading?
by Tim Mackinnon May 10, 2018

May 10, 2018

Hi - Iâm trying to automate the deployment of a seaside image to Digital Ocean. I was following the Enterprise Pharo booklet - and its a bit out of date, but I wanted to do the bit about taking a clean image and then loading in my project which Iâve stored in Git using Iceberg. So on the command line I am trying to eval â Iceberg enableMetacelloIntegration: true. Metacello new baseline: 'PagerDuty'; repository: 'git@gitlab.com:macta/WillowPagerDuty.git'; load.â But I get retry errors and a walkback, so Iâve tried to do the same in the playground in a fresh image and its true - I get an error because ZnClient is trying to connect to a url like "http://:80/git@gitlab.com:macta/WillowPagerDuty.git/?C=M;O%3DD <http://:80/git@gitlab.com:macta/WillowPagerDuty.git/?C=M;O=D>â (so it interprets that git@ specification strangely). But what is weird, is that if I use Iceberg - connected to the same repo (and specified the same way) - and then use the Metacello - Install baseline menu (right click on the BaselineOfXXX package) it then works perfectly. So whatâs the difference? It looks like the latter is mapping down to a "repository: 'gitlocal://', packageDir;â whereas the above is trying to read it over the wire? I then tried using an access token for gitlab, so its an https variant - but that gave me an error as well? Does this mean to automate I have to bring down the initial BaseLine - but then if that baseline refers to others - that seems to work, so Iâm a bit confused about what is going on? Tim

Serializing Excpetion with Fuel on the production and opening debugger on the dev machine - hot to? [Pharo 5]
by Petr Fischer May 10, 2018

May 10, 2018

Hello, what is the current procedure for achieving %subj%? I am on latest Pharo 5. I am serializing server side exception with: FLSerializer serialize: anException toFileNamed: 'something'. But how to open a debugger after materialization on the "dev machine side"? I found (Google, Mailing list) some examples, but it's obsolete (the debugger class no longer exists in Pharo 5 etc etc). Tonel, Pharo 6.1 and file per class?
by Tim Mackinnon May 10, 2018

May 10, 2018

Hi guys - With all the talk about iceberg changes, Iâve stayed away from it for a bit (6 months) - but downloaded a new 6.1 image a few weeks ago and went to version some stuff yesterday into a new project. Iceberg seems a bit more stable - but it still seems to write out individual methods as files which I thought had been changed? Am I doing something wrong - or do i need to set something? There may be a setting for that, but if not and I wanted to find out about how to do it I'd take the shotgun approach.... In System > Settings, search for "pretty" and the with some setting related to newLines, some line "New line After Cascade" then "Browse" it, then in the body of the method find that text again and look for senders attached selector. That brought me to " BIConfigurableFormatter >> visitCascadeNode: " and browsing that method in the System Browser shows a bundle of other "visitXXX" methods. Drop a "self haltOnce" in an interesting one and try to trigger when you pretty print. Trace through a few times to learn how it does its stuff, and see if you can change it to do what you want.

Package extension. Adding instance variables to classes
by Alidra Abdelghani May 7, 2018

May 7, 2018

Hi, I am working on a package named ClassNamesAnalyzer and I need to add code to third party classes in other packages (for instance the FAMIX-Core package). âExtendingâ third party classes with methods is easy; I just need to categorise my methods under the *ClassNamesAnalyzer protocole so that loading my package will load them in the image. However, if I want to add instance variables to theses classes, they are not there when I load the package in a new image. So my question is : is there a way to include instance variables addition to other packages in my package? Another question is : is it good practice to add instance variables to classes in third party packages and is there a way to avoid it (because I am not very confortable with that idea)? Thanks in advance, Abdelghani

reading from a named pipe in Pharo
by Siemen Baader May 7, 2018

May 7, 2018

Hi, I'd like to use an external tool to edit HTML code and then store and version it in my Pharo image. I'd like to create a named pipe that the external application will save to, and then have Pharo watch for whenever the named pipe is written to and then execute code to handle the data from there. But I can't find any place to register a callback on FileReference and similar classes that will notify Pharo when the named pipe is changed, and when the external editor will read from it. Is there any support for this? I know there are workarounds like polling or reading the file when it is used, but I'd prefer to wire things together directly and avoid duplicating the data if possible. thanks, Siemen

Commit request on PBKDF2
by Martin Dias May 7, 2018

May 7, 2018

Hello Udo and PBKDF2 users, Thanks for the PBKDF2 [1] project; it's been useful in the mongotalk project [2]. Now, I write you with a small change proposal due to some problems I have because of name conflicts with classes at Cryptography package [3] (which ConfigurationOfPBKDF2 declares as a dependency). I analyzed what are the concrete dependencies in PBKDF2 to Cryptography: - Core uses SHA1, which is in Pharo at least since Pharo 4.0 - Tests use the ByteArray>>fromHexString: method extension, which could be copied. (BTW also thanks to Christophe Demarey and collaborators for the Dependencies Analyzer, it's very useful!) Then (unless I'm missing something), PBKDF2 doesn't really need Cryptography as dependency. I can commit the changes if you agree (I see the repository is public). It works locally. Histogram for files dates and sizes

I'm seeing some examples in the image and in http://agilevisualization.com/AgileVisualization/Roassal/0104-Roassal.html, but I wonder if there is a more mature and already existing RTObject for this kind of work. Also I would like to show Y axis scale using size of files in a human friendly format (160 Kb instead of 160000.0 and so on). Any help or pointers on this is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Offray

Using secure websockets server side with Zinc
by Cyril Ferlicot D. May 6, 2018

May 6, 2018

Hi! I am trying to deploy a Seaside application that uses Zinc's websockets. I use nginx and I have a TLS certificate for the application so I need to use secure websockets (wss://) and not simple websockets (ws://). I got a problem because the client could not access to the server because it was failing the handshake. I could make it work by using nginx to manage the certificate. But I was wondering if it would be possible with Zinc to give the access to the certificate to manage the connection instead of doing it via nginx. Is it possible to do this? Thanks in advance. -- Cyril Ferlicot https://ferlicot.fr

Mocketry: what is used of #where ?

Hello, When I am writing tests using Mocketry's DSL, I get puzzled about how / when to use #where, and how is it different when it's used and when it is not? As far as i tried, I did not find any difference. That is, pasting part of one of my tests: response := znClient username: (self uidy: 'Q7') asString, '/TEST' password: 'tk'; timeout: 1; post; response. response should be isSuccess. response where contentType should equal: ZnMimeType applicationJson. response where entity should not be: nil. (STON fromString: response entity contents) should equal: nil I get the same result (pass if ok, failure with DNU when thing is not present) whether `where` is there or isn't. Could you explain what is it's purpose and correct usage? Thanks, Herby
