Hi - Iâm after some ideas or maybe previous examples that might guide me in the best approach of wrapping a low level library (essentially the Jira connector that Phil demoâd at Pharo days this year). There are some low level commands that will fetch json arrays for you given a âliraâ instance- e.g: board := JiraBoard fromJira: jira named: âProject'. sprints := board sprintsFrom: jira. My question is related to building on top of this - and its a style question. I want model objects that wrap the json arrays and let me navigate things a bit more simply, and query details more naturally - however I canât decide whether my model objects should âcontainâ a jira when you instantiate them - which can be re-used for subsequent queries - OR - whether I should view jira as a from of context, and keep passing it to methods when I need to retrieve more details, or child objects? e.g. myBoard := ModelBoard fromJira: jira named: âProjectâ. mySprints := myBoard sprints. âNo need to pass the jira againâ. vs. mySprints :- myBoard sprintsIn: jira. Iâm wondering if anything might guide me one way or the other? Is one more tasteful/elegant than the other? Tim

Wiring objects, IoC and Service Locator

Hello, I would like to know how people in Pharo ecosystem do to deal with object wiring, as described by Marting Fowler in https://martinfowler.com/articles/injection.html#FormsOfDependencyInjection: "A common issue to deal with is how to wire together different elements: how do you fit together this web controller architecture with that database interface backing when they were built by different teams with little knowledge of each other." He gives an example, I will leave it in java as it is simple enough to understand: "class MovieLister... public Movie[] moviesDirectedBy(String arg) { List allMovies = finder.findAll(); for (Iterator it = allMovies.iterator(); it.hasNext();) { Movie movie = (Movie) it.next(); if (!movie.getDirector().equals(arg)) it.remove(); } return (Movie[]) allMovies.toArray(new Movie[allMovies.size()]); }" The question is how to provide the finder object in a decoupled matter, a naive approach would be: " private MovieFinder finder; public MovieLister() { finder = new ColonDelimitedMovieFinder("movies1.txt"); }" Which couples the MovieLister to the specific ColonDelimitedMovieFinder class. Fowler explains how to decouple using an IoC framework or a Service Locator. In Java and .Net IoC is used most of the time. As long an object that responds to this message is provided, I can create as many derivations I want and the MovieLister will be decoupled from the MovieFinder. That way, however, I still have to wire things by hand, and I am not sure if this is what I am supposed to do in order to solve the decouple problem. Can you explain me how this is done in Pharo? It's is usually wiring by hand? Is there a simple construction that deals with the wiring problem that I cannot foresee? Thanks in advance, Vitor

Hi, A Dr. Geo user on Ubuntu 16.04 reported to me instability problem I do not meet on my 12.04 config. It seems related to Cairo or FreeType. I will likely update my system on 16.04 later this summer, but I can't just tweak it as this is the end of the school year with several admin tasks to conduct. Remote debugger: do i need identical images ?

Hi, when using the Pharo remote debugger, we have a server side (the remote application) and a client side (the local computer used to debug). Apart from the remote debugger itself, do both images need to have exactly the same code - especially the application itself - or could they be different ? More specifically, to debug a program, do i need a local "clone" image dedicated to debug the remote image ? Steven.

Rewriting question

Hi, i have a private rewriting rule. unfortunately it shows up in the lower pane of the SystemBrowser which makes no sense at all, since it is not intended for use outside of the program using it. how do i make it invisible for that part of the systembrowser? and btw where are the rules collected for that part? werner

How to grab a debug on Syntax Error?

Hi I'm loading some old code to migrate to github and I got an syntax error. The support is a bit terrible. You get a pop up but now idea how to do anything with it. Can we access the stack? We should really improve that part. Now I'm using an old Pharo 40 and trying to guess where was the difference in synta (probably #( #3)) is not allowed anymore and republish a new version. Stef

As part of this BHP is sponsoring an online hackathon "Digital Tribes" https://www.unearthed.solutions/digital-tribes-perth/ based out of Perth - my home town. Applications are open to anyone around the world and will focus on IoT challenges. Whether you are a student, working full time or joining from anywhere around the world, if you are a "digital native" with hardware and software skills, then this one is for you. Challenge 1: Can you enable operational awareness on civil equipment to achieve compliance to our mine plans? Challenge 2: Can you design a prototype which operates in an ad hoc network suited for distributed safety devices? So the task is probably going to be something to do with location awareness of personelle around haul packs (look for the people in the photos) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haul_truck It would be really cool to get some Pharo into the mix of solutions. Regardless of individual team success or even want a job with BHP, Pharo could gain a lot from simple exposure to some of BHP's key innovation decision makers. This would ideally suit those with Pharo+RaspberryPi+hardware experience (I'm looking at you, robotics guys!) but also (I'm guessing) skills in data science and GPS-like triangulation algorithms. The first thing to do is to apply as an individual... Registrations: 12 June - 18 June Event dates: 30 June - 14 July BHP will then form the teams to get a broad range of skills in each team. For remote participants they aim to form teams in the same location or time zones. So I get the feeling that when they mention "digital native" they are looking for youth, maybe students or new graduates (sub-30yrs?) and are looking for the dynamics of how participants work together. So I think the focus is against existing teams and more on individuals. There is no harm in anyone registering (we can swarm them with "Pharo" just to make them curious), but particularly encourage your high quality students to apply, and even select a few local non-Pharoers with expertise you might lack. [Modeling with Pharo] How to model a simple human interaction.

Hey all.. I got my first paying gig that i am able to use pharo with, and i am on the last leg before calling it complete. Hereâs what I need to do.. This application accepts SMS text messages. It allows the user to send images via MMS and place an order to a print house for those images.. Â it then compiles the order, and submits it to the order processing system and makes the prints. The last thing I need to zero in on is handling the interaction. Believe it or not, I have never modeled such an interaction. The interaction goes: - user sends images{s) - bot says âthanksâ and asks if there are more - user types âdoneâ or sends more - on âdoneâ bot asks for print size - bot says âthanksâ and the interaction is done. order is processed. my first inclination is to use a state machine, progressing through order each time the user enters âdoneâ..Â does this sound reasonable, or is there a better model/design pattern for this interaction? I got a seg fault when I tried to execute some OSSubProcess code in Pharo 6.0. Namely, | process | process := OSSUnixSubprocess new command: '/bin/cat'; redirectStdin; redirectStdout; run. process stdinStream nextPutAll: 'we are testing!'; nextPutAll: 'we again!'; close. process waitForExit. process stdoutStream upToEndOfFile inspect. process closeAndCleanStreams.
