Hi - Iâm after some ideas or maybe previous examples that might guide me in the best approach of wrapping a low level library (essentially the Jira connector that Phil demoâd at Pharo days this year). There are some low level commands that will fetch json arrays for you given a âliraâ instance- e.g: board := JiraBoard fromJira: jira named: âProject'. sprints := board sprintsFrom: jira. My question is related to building on top of this - and its a style question. I want model objects that wrap the json arrays and let me navigate things a bit more simply, and query details more naturally - however I canât decide whether my model objects should âcontainâ a jira when you instantiate them - which can be re-used for subsequent queries - OR - whether I should view jira as a from of context, and keep passing it to methods when I need to retrieve more details, or child objects? e.g. myBoard := ModelBoard fromJira: jira named: âProjectâ. mySprints := myBoard sprints. âNo need to pass the jira againâ. vs. mySprints :- myBoard sprintsIn: jira. Iâm wondering if anything might guide me one way or the other? Is one more tasteful/elegant than the other? Tim

Wiring objects, IoC and Service Locator

Hello, I would like to know how people in Pharo ecosystem do to deal with object wiring, as described by Marting Fowler in https://martinfowler.com/articles/injection.html#FormsOfDependencyInjection: "A common issue to deal with is how to wire together different elements: how do you fit together this web controller architecture with that database interface backing when they were built by different teams with little knowledge of each other." He gives an example, I will leave it in java as it is simple enough to understand: "class MovieLister... public Movie[] moviesDirectedBy(String arg) { List allMovies = finder.findAll(); for (Iterator it = allMovies.iterator(); it.hasNext();) { Movie movie = (Movie) it.next(); if (!movie.getDirector().equals(arg)) it.remove(); } return (Movie[]) allMovies.toArray(new Movie[allMovies.size()]); }" The question is how to provide the finder object in a decoupled matter, a naive approach would be: " private MovieFinder finder; public MovieLister() { finder = new ColonDelimitedMovieFinder("movies1.txt"); }" Which couples the MovieLister to the specific ColonDelimitedMovieFinder class. Fowler explains how to decouple using an IoC framework or a Service Locator. In Java and .Net IoC is used most of the time. That way, however, I still have to wire things by hand, and I am not sure if this is what I am supposed to do in order to solve the decouple problem. Can you explain me how this is done in Pharo? Hi, A Dr. Geo user on Ubuntu 16.04 reported to me instability problem I do not meet on my 12.04 config. It seems related to Cairo or FreeType. I will likely update my system on 16.04 later this summer, but I can't just tweak it as this is the end of the school year with several admin tasks to conduct. Remote debugger: do i need identical images ?

Hi, when using the Pharo remote debugger, we have a server side (the remote application) and a client side (the local computer used to debug). Apart from the remote debugger itself, do both images need to have exactly the same code - especially the application itself - or could they be different ? More specifically, to debug a program, do i need a local "clone" image dedicated to debug the remote image ? Steven.

How to grab a debug on Syntax Error?

Hi I'm loading some old code to migrate to github and I got an syntax error. The support is a bit terrible. You get a pop up but now idea how to do anything with it. Can we access the stack? Applications are open to anyone around the world and will focus on IoT challenges. Whether you are a student, working full time or joining from anywhere around the world, if you are a "digital native" with hardware and software skills, then this one is for you. Challenge 1: Can you enable operational awareness on civil equipment to achieve compliance to our mine plans? Challenge 2: Can you design a prototype which operates in an ad hoc network suited for distributed safety devices? So the task is probably going to be something to do with location awareness of personelle around haul packs (look for the people in the photos) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haul_truck It would be really cool to get some Pharo into the mix of solutions. [Modeling with Pharo] How to model a simple human interaction.

Hey all.. I got my first paying gig that i am able to use pharo with, and i am on the last leg before calling it complete. Hereâs what I need to do.. This application accepts SMS text messages. It allows the user to send images via MMS and place an order to a print house for those images.. Â it then compiles the order, and submits it to the order processing system and makes the prints. The last thing I need to zero in on is handling the interaction. Believe it or not, I have never modeled such an interaction. The interaction goes: - user sends images{s) - bot says âthanksâ and asks if there are more - user types âdoneâ or sends more - on âdoneâ bot asks for print size - bot says âthanksâ and the interaction is done. order is processed. my first inclination is to use a state machine, progressing through order each time the user enters âdoneâ..Â does this sound reasonable, or is there a better model/design pattern for this interaction? dynamic interaction with Mondriam

Hi all, I would like to do some visualisations with Mondrian where you change the visualisation by selecting actions. For instance you have : b := RTMondrian new. b shape rectangle withTextAbove. b nodes:(1 to: 5). b layout grid. b edges connectFrom: [ :e | e + 1 ]. b build. b view then you can click a button to: 1 display/hide the labels above the elements. 2 display/hide some elements (all odd numbers for instance) 3 display/hide connections between elements. I saw a visualisation in the Roassal examples where you can add elements in a dynamic stack grapher. So I presume it is possible to do the same with other types of visus. Any hints? Teapot: Managing authentication by a third party (Fossil)

Hi, I'm trying to make some test on a distributed wiki provided by Fossil as a backend for storage/auth, Mustache + Material Design Lite for the frontend and Teapot using as middleware for logic and connecting frontend and backend. Teapot is connected with Fossil via JSON and domain objects are stored as Fossil wiki pages. So far the experiment is going well, but now I'm wondering about how to make authentication. In my experiments I use the Fossil user and password to get an auth token that is used via the Fossil's JSON API to make all the operations that require permissions on the repository and now I wonder how this strategy should be implemented for "real" (for the tests, I read the password data from a local temporal file). - There is some User Management Framework or project for Teapot or Zinc, without going to more complex frameworks like Seaside or Aida? - Should I have some "Sessions" object that stores logged users, passwords and/or auth tokens inside the image and deletes them once the user have logoff and/or on a time basis? - Any other strategy or lite user auth framework that I have not thought ? Any advice or experience in dealing with similar scenario is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Offray

Hi there, A Dr. Geo user on Ubuntu 64bits 16.04 got that buggy rendering of the canvas, then on some situation the rendering completely stop on a red screen, with a stack showing may be a zero divide error. I did not get access to the PharoDebog yet. Fonts on the screenshot is not right too. Could it be a mixed problem between FreeType and Cairo? Any first though on the issue welcome. Given the fact Dr. Geo is still based on Pharo3 and it works pretty fine on my old Ubuntu 12.07 derived system, it may be time to port the newer Pharo6. Congrats for the Pharo6 release. ZnClient: how to emulate a curl command

Hi, I'm prototyping some integration between Fossil and Pharo for the creation of dynamic distributed web sites [1]. Now I would like to send some messages to store serialized STON domain objects as Fossil wiki pages. The command that makes this, using curl, is: curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"authToken": "mytoken", "payload": {"name": "foo", "content": "bar"}}' http://localhost:8081/json/wiki/create and I thought that a similar command would be the one at [2], but there is something about ZnEntity that I'm not understanding. Hi Marc, It would be so cool but no, it's not planned. Like SDL and Morphic, Gtk is only used as a backend for windowing. This means that only primitives related to windowing are currently implemented (i.e GtkWindow related apis). Working on widget binding with Gtk or Qt is something i would like to start, maybe next year but it is quite hard/long to do well. The Mars framework built by Esteban was a really good starting point but it is not maintained. Hi all, As well described by Peter, Bloc is a low level graphics library which mainly manages multi-windowing (Morphic, SDL, Gtk soon), user interaction (events) and drawing (using Sparta). Brick is a widget framework on top of Bloc (button, inputField, ...) and Spec is a "multi-backend" UI Builder. I know that the installation of Bloc can be confusing because of the multiple possibilities. No need to move to Application folder for Pharo 6 32 and 64 bit versions

I have latest macos sierra , dowload , opened and saved image for both pharo 6 (32 and 64 bit) and I see no problem doing that from the dowload folder without moving the apps to the Application folder. Am I missing something here ? Because when I dowloaded them there was a warning dialog that said that this would not work.

Some Metacello issue

Hi, after having made some new releases I have an odd Metacello issue and I am not sure how to debug it. This happens on my legacy Pharo3/Pharo4 images that I still need to support in deployment. It seems to be related to a dependency chain of "app"->VoyageMongo->Magritte3 3.5.0 and somehow version '3.1.1.1' of Magritte3 doing something with Grease #stable and not finding a 'Core' group. Any idea how to debug it or if any configuration changed recently? It also only seems to happen if there are two dependency chains that try to load the same VoyageMongo version. I don't think that this is a good example. From user perspective you usually interact with only two classes (reader and writer)... and I don't really see how UML could help you there. The internal architecture on the other hand, or tools with models could benefit from it much more (at least in class diagrams, the relationships between elements tends to be the most important part, so if you have one or two classes... then you won't have much connections...). I think the key to this is intention revealing names and comments. And shipping unit tests that are the best example of "running documentation". Take Sven's NeoCSV package as an example. Great documentation and very good method names. and a complete set of tests. Sounds frightening at first if you come from a static typing background, but in my experience it works quite well. There are UML tools. Some even allow round-trips where the UML diagrams can be generated from code (e.g. IBM/Instantiations have the UML Designer add-on), but to be honest, these only put you in high danger of playing with the tool and layout and stuff rather than concentrate on what is important. UML is fine for communicating the raw structure and basic ideas. Generating UML from code on the fly can help understand code, but I've seen too many projects that made the UML design documents an art of itself, and most of the times the diagrams were out of sync anyways... Hi Marc. In Smalltalk, we rely on naming conventions a lot. The great thing is that Smalltalk selectors/symbols/method names read like English. aDictionary at: aKey put: anObject. aString indexOf: aCharacter startingAt: start ifAbsent: aBlock Seems pretty clear, no? We also rely on comments. For instance this is the class comment for IceRepository - an abstraction of a git repo. I represent an interface to a git repository. My main responsibilities are: - Load/update both baselines and individual packages from the repository. - Commit changes to the local repository and publish them to a remote repository. - Browse other versions of the loaded packages. - Handle branches For the Collaborators Part: State my main collaborators and one line about how I interact with them. Hello, I don't know Smalltalk well enough to give myself an answer about the following topic: When using design patterns, one benefit of writing interfaces and passing objects, that implement this interface, to methods is, that the reader instantly knows: okay, here the method A expects something that implements method B. Due to the nature of being a dynamically typed language, Smalltalk does not need interfaces. An exception object is thrown when a message is passed to an object that does not implement that method. But this message send could be deep inside the code. How do you show to the reader of your code your intention, that you are expecting, let's say for example, an iterator or an object that implements method X, Y and Z? Just with your method comments? Do you use UML? If so, how (without interfaces that point to the required methods)? Sorry, but I think my understanding of OOP is still to much influenced by C++ and Java based teachings... Hi, i'm trying to migrate an object from a given class A to a subclass of A with new inst vars. Can't get it to work. I have a class and an instance of it, say: Object subclass: #A instanceVariableNames: '' |a| a := A new. A has no instance variables. Now i create a subclass B of A with a new inst var: A subclass: #B instanceVariableNames: 'x' I want to do the following: B adoptInstance: a It does'nt work, for what i understand it is because the format of the classes are different (B has an inst var and A has not). How can i make the a object become an instance of B (subclass of a's class), making a acquiring the new inst var x (and in more complex cases keeping its own previous inst vars) ? Steven.

Hi, i followed the video and opened the RewriteToolbuilder on some code in pharo4.0. i then tried to keep things simple and made a transformationrule,which i thought would not change anything, by just copying "â@.Statements." into the lower left & right panels (without the " of course).i then press 'generate rule' and get a 'Syntax Error: end of Statement list encountered' with this specification: ^ ArithmeticError signal: 'Negative numbers canEnd of statement list encountered -> ''t be raised to float powers.' . but this part of the code in the upper left panel is just a copy of some unchanged standard pharo4.0 code. where did i go wrong? werner

Hi Oleks, This is probably out of scope (check with your mentors), but I was curious how text processing and inter-table lookups might fit into you project? Check out the Excel side-story at [1] (starting just above the picture of the red tree) "Everybody thought of Excel as a financial modeling application [...] for creating calculation models with formulas and stuff. ... [but] most people just used Excel to make lists". This is exactly my personal experience. The greatest practical value I've had from Excel is massaging text lists. Some use cases: A. getting a bunch of messy hand typed data that needs cleaning up to be consistent before deriving statistics from it. There is no sense programming the whole workflow since its a highly iterative process to work through issues as you discover them. Issues are on-shot, but you want to apply it to 1000 rows. B. tracking the status of 1000s of drawings as they progress through a workflow. Tagging who is working on each drawing, status and using AutoFilter to print out "Drawings To Go" lists. C. managing a photo shoot for a school ball, recording orders and generating filenames to copy originals to a USB stick to take to the photo lab, such that duplicate orders each have a single file with the filename printed on the back making it easier to sort into envelopes for each order. (This is from last week so I can provide a sample Excel file for it) For a detailed example, sometimes I might need to compare the basenames of the files in two folders: 1. In both folders A & B, from the command line I'd do `ls -l > ls.txt` 2. I'd load both text files into Excel, one per tab, where each line appeared in a single column. 3. I split on spaces to convert single column into multiple columns [2] 4. I'd split off the filename extension. So I'd need to reverse the string to determine the location of the last period and store that in a temporary column. Then two more columns hold the formulas extracting the first and second parts of the split using LEFT() and RIGHT(). 5. Then in next column I'd have a formula using VLOOKUP() [4] to see if a row's basename appears in any row of the other tab. 6. I'd then do conditional formatting highlighting the row green if the VLOOKUP() was found. "Text Data Grooming" would be a popular horizonal application demonstrating Pharo's liveness (indeed Excel can be considered a "live" environment., saving its "image" to a xls file). How to use uFFI with String

There is shockingly very little documentation on how to use uFFI. In particular, I have the following situation... A shared C lib has the following function: void get_machine(char *machine) { uname(&uname_s); strcpy(machine, uname_s.machine); } It copies the content of a string value into the buffer passed to it (char *machine). I want to call this function from Pharo, thus: buffer := String new: 64. self ffiCall: #( void get_machine(String buffer) ). The buffer never receives the string value (it just contains the 64 initiialized spaces). Clearly, I'm misunderstanding the proper mechanism for doing this. [There are other functions in the shared C lib that work fine, such as: uint get_uptime() { sysinfo(&info); return info.uptime; } Returning integers or floats is no problem. Morphic or forking bug?

I have a puzzling bug. I've narrowed the scenario down to this code: CrankyÂ»initA a := ((StringMorph contents: '####') color: Color white) position: (0@0). m addMorph: a CrankyÂ»initialize f := Form fromFileNamed: 'hot_air_balloon_mysticmorning.jpg'. m := ImageMorph new. m form: f. self initA. m openInWindowLabeled: 'Cranky'. delay := (Delay forSeconds: 5). [ [ true ] whileTrue: [ a contents: 0 asString. delay wait ] fork I can run this application for hours and hours with no problem. However, if I run it for a while and then close the application and then save/exit the image, the next time I start the image, there is some likelihood it will crash dump. The probability is something like 5-10%. Interestingly, if I remove the statement... a contents: 0 asString. from the infinite loop, I've not been able to replicate the crash. XPath has unresolved dependencies

Hi, Loading XPath from the catalog browser into the latest image raises a warning that there are unresolved references, and that the package depends on the following classes: XMLHighlighter, XMLHighlighterDefaults, GLMXMLHighlighterTextStylerDecorator. Saving selected changes in Monticello

I thought I was going to do this all at once, but now I realize I should split this into 2 commit versions. Is there a way in Monticello to say save my changes, but not this and that changes? Lots of the links have rotted over time.ÃÂ If you have a squeak or pharo related blog could you glance at the links on the right hand side of planet.squeak.org and see if your blog is listed, and, if so make sure the feed link is ok?ÃÂ If it is not listed if you send me the info I will add it. [Deploy] Deploying application - New Best Practices?

Hey, all.. I have a Pharo application that I ready to deploy to production. I havenât done this in a lot of years, so I thought I might check around on what the current best practices are. The app is a Teapot(REST) based application that processes SMS and MMS messages, including saving files to the file system, etc.. In the past, I would have added some kind of remote desktop server into my image, and run it headless on the server. When I needed to update the source code with monticello, I would use a VNC client to log in, update my source code, save the image, etc. I have a feeling things have progressed at this point. Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn current best practices? I will most likely be updating this to a gemstones app, but while this is in beta, i just want to worry about user experience of the application.. Can we auto translate Python to Smalltalk?

Python and JavaScript are driving the movement to Dynamic Languages. In particular, Python is the language of choice to teach students programming in universities. So, Smalltalk stands to gain from this shift. We all know that Smalltalk has the best environment. But we lack the diverse code base. Can we patch that gap with automatic translation from Python to Smalltalk? How feasible would it be to auto translate SciPy to SciSmalltalk? Even if it is imperfect, can we cut the effort by 50% or 80%? Hello, in Pharo 6.0, there is new annotations/pragmas like "<todo>". Is there any doc about this? How can I browse all "todos", how can I browse all possible annotations etc.? Thanks! pf
