Parser for javascript mongodb (json) notation selects
by chrismihaylyk April 16, 2017

April 16, 2017

Hello, friends! I'm creating MongoDBBrowser that have all CRUD operations and I need a parser that translates javascript queries to MongoDB into the queries (for making selects, inserts etc.) using MongoQuery class. For example, I have query db.SomeCollection.find( {$or: [ { name: { $regex: /test/i } }, { description: { $regex: /test/i } } ] } ) that is manually rewriting into someCollection select: { '$or' -> { { 'name' -> { '$regex' -> 'test' . '$options' -> 'i' } asDictionary } asDictionary. { 'description' -> { '$regex' -> 'test' . '$options' -> 'i' } asDictionary } asDictionary } } asDictionary But I need to have a parser that will do it automatically. Maybe there are already exist one? If not, how to write my own? Please help. Thanks a lot, Khrystyna=) -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Parser-for-javascript-mongodb-json-notation-selects-t… Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Pharo image freeze and "Alt-." has no effect
by Steven Rémot April 16, 2017

April 16, 2017

Hello everyone, I'm new to pharo, and was writing a simple 2D game with Athens for rendering to practice a bit. I'm loving the environment so far, developing the game while it's running is really enjoyable :-) . However, when the game is running, the pharo image will freeze at a random time. Alt-. doesn't make my image back to normal, the only solution I found is closing my image and opening it again, until the next freeze... I don't really know what to do to investigate this bug, there is no output from pharo about this. The only thing I thought about is starting from a fresh image, importing my code and running it again to ensure it wasn't some messy state in the image I was using, and it froze even when running my code from a fresh image. What can I do to debug it? Do you need more information to give me a direction? Just in case you need it, here is the source: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pfn7ccw27i4nqr7/Creakout-debug.st?dl=0 Thanks, Steven Rémot

Pharo 6 snap install
by Alistair Grant April 16, 2017

April 16, 2017

Hi Everyone, I've made a snap package for Pharo 6 which I think is far enough along for some wider testing. To get Pharo up and running on Ubuntu 16.04: # Install Pharo $ sudo snap install --edge pharo --classic # If your system isn't configured for threaded heartbeat: $ sudo pharo.config # Download the latest Pharo 6 image $ pharo.getimage # Go... $ pharo.ui Pharo.image # or: $ pharo Pharo.image eval 4+3 To get a list of available commands: $ snap info pharo If you're on Debian or Ubuntu 14.04 you'll need to install snapd, see https://snapcraft.io/docs/core/install The VM is the threaded heartbeat, dated 201704101933. The installation flags are: --edge - The edge channel is for development versions. It progresses to beta, candidate and then stable. --classic - Snap packages are normally sandboxed for security reasons. Since Pharo is a development environment in which we want to be able to run any executable, or load any library, it is installed with access to the entire system (as the running user). Why use snap packages? - They include all dependencies. In particular, for the 32 bit versions, this means that it isn't necessary to install all the 32 bit architecture and associated dependencies. - Including dependencies means that there shouldn't be any problems with incompatible library versions when upgrading. Why not use snap packages? - It's a relatively new technology, with a number of rough edges. - There may still be issues with its sandboxing that I haven't discovered yet. - Please let me know of any others to be listed here. - Because the package uses classic confinement, it isn't cross-distribution in practice (unfortunately). If you don't trust me to configure your system correctly (which requires sudo): - All the scripts that make up the sub-commands are visible, e.g. pharo.config can be viewed at /snap/pharo/current/usr/bin/CONFIG The packaging code is at: https://github.com/akgrant43/pharo-snap I'm interested to know if people would like to see this eventually become a supported package format. Cheers, Alistair

FileReference / and parent
by Alistair Grant April 16, 2017

April 16, 2017

Hi All, I previously suggested a change to Path>>/ which actually covered two issues: 1. The handling of the parent directory notation, i.e. ".." 2. The construction of path segments when appending a string. As Damien pointed out, the first issue needs a bit more consideration. I think the second point is still problematic and can be addressed separately. In particular: ('/a/b/c' asFileReference / 'd/e/f') parent "File @ /a/b/c" I would expect the result to be "File @ /a/b/c/d/e" The fix is straightforward (although someone may be able to propose a more elgant solution): -- / aString | path additionalPath index | aString isEmptyOrNil ifTrue: [ Error signal: 'Path element cannot be empty or nil']. additionalPath := Path from: aString. path := self class new: self size + additionalPath size. path copyFrom: self. index := self size + 1. additionalPath do: [ :each | path at: index put: each. index := index + 1. ]. ^ path -- 1. Do you agree with the proposed change? 2. (Assuming you agree): Should we target Pharo 6.0 or 7.0? On one side, this is clearly a bug, on the other, no one has reported it to date, so it isn't having a big impact. Thanks, Alistair

why is adding instance variables so slow?
by Peter Uhnak April 16, 2017

April 16, 2017

Hi, does anyone know why adding instance variables is so slow? I did some quick benchmarks (see below), resulting in more than order of magnitude speed difference between having it in the class definition and adding it later. In fact it is still much faster to delete the class and then recreate it with the instance variables in the d efinition. For four arguments it is till 8x faster to delete the class four times and recreate it then just add the variable. Unfortunately I cannot just trash the classes (they have methods and inheritance). So the question is: why is it so slow? can I somehow improve the performance? Thanks, Peter Benchmarks: [ cls := Object subclass: #Some1. cls removeFromSystem. ] bench. "'91 per second'" [ cls := Object subclass: #Some2 instanceVariableNames: 'variable'. cls removeFromSystem ] bench. "'90 per second'" [ cls := Object subclass: #Some3. cls addInstVarNamed: 'variable'. cls removeFromSystem. ] bench. Pharo6 ombu-session files in pharo-local
by Holger Freyther April 15, 2017

April 15, 2017

Hi, as part of moving a test image from Pharo5 to Pharo6 I also noticed that on each start a new "ombu-session" folder will be created (and never cleaned up). For a server-side deployment this is quite unfortunate as I want/need to use a fixed amount of disk space. I think Norbert has similar concerns with this feature. We are using "image-launch" to run the image and then either systemd|monit|runit|kubernetes will execute (and re-execute) image-launch. So potentially many many folders are created and never used. On deployments with many images, it is rare to make online changes and even more rare to try to recover them. Would it be possible to create the underlying storage or disable it completely? thank you holger

Methods & Classes using the command line.
by nacho April 13, 2017

April 13, 2017

Hi pharoers, If I do the following in a minimal Pharo image, using the command line: ./Pharo --headless Pharo.image eval "Object subclass: #TestClass instanceVariableNames: 'one' classVariableNames: '' package: 'IS-Test'." I get the class created. However, if I try to pass the following argument to eval: "Object subclass: #TestClass instanceVariableNames: 'one' classVariableNames: '' package: 'IS-Test'. TestClass compile:'one ^one' classified: 'accessor'." I get an UndefinedObject>>DoIt (TestClass is Undeclared). At first I thought it could be that it takes sometime to compile the class, so added some delay: "Object subclass: #TestClass instanceVariableNames: 'one' classVariableNames: '' package: 'IS-Test'. (Delay forSeconds: 5) wait. TestClass compile:'one ^one' classified: 'accessor'." But again: UndefinedObject>>DoIt (TestClass is Undeclared). I even tried to do: "Object subclass: #TestClass instanceVariableNames: 'one' classVariableNames: '' package: 'IS-Test'. Smalltalk saveAndQuit." and after that add only a method by passing: "TestClass compile:'one ^one' classified: 'accessor'. Smalltalk saveAndQuit." But again: UndefinedObject>>DoIt (TestClass is Undeclared) How do I add a method to a class using the command line? Thanks in advance Nacho ----- Nacho Smalltalker apprentice. Recommended stable Pharo 5.0 VM for Linux users?
by Luke Gorrie April 12, 2017

April 12, 2017

Questions! Where can I find the source code for the latest stable Linux/unix VM for Pharo 5.0? I want to package it for a Linux distribution (NixOS). Currently I am confused: The release tarballs at http://files.pharo.org/vm/src/vm-unix-sources/blessed show the latest non-Spur version being 2016-02-18. The github repo at https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo-vm has a tag Pharo50-stable on commit b8ec25a which dates from 2016-05-04. (Is this tag immutable or does it move around?) The URL for downloading binaries (get.pharo.org/vm50) does not seem to say anywhere what version it is downloading, and it was not obvious to me from downloading the binary and inspecting it with 'strings' either (it's not for my distro so I can't just run it with '--version'). Help would be appreciated! Great if somebody could also tell me under what circumstances the spur VM is preferred to the non-spur VM.

[ann] steering agile architecture video published by o'reilly
by Tudor Girba April 12, 2017

April 12, 2017

Hi, I am happy to announce that OâReilly has published my Steering Agile Architecture video training: http://www.humane-assessment.com/blog/steering-agile-architecture-video-tra… This video is based on my work on humane assessment, and it features Moose prominently. It also shows Pharo, GT and Roassal (in the last part). The video is indeed paid and it is mainly targeted to people that have a Safari Books Online subscription. But, the interesting thing about it is that it opens Pharo and Moose to a new kind of an audience, OâReilly being the most prominent publishing company in the software area. Agile architecture is considered a prominent topic but the literature (until now) was rather loose at how to make it really work in practice. This course offers both a concrete approach based on humane assessment. As you might know, humane assessment centers around the idea of building tools cheaply as a way to figure the system out, and this is right now pretty much only practicable in Moose and Pharo. One thing that I ask people when I go to conferences, the last one being the Software Architecture Conference organized by OâReilly, is if they like working with legacy systems. They actively dislike it. Then I show them demos of how it can be like and then I ask them if they think these demos are cool. And I never encountered one that did not find it cool. So, in a way, we can now be quite confident in saying that we work on the single platform that makes working with an existing system cool. Not a small feat. So, if you do get the chance to look at these things, you might also get a concrete inspiration of how to leverage Pharo skills within companies that do not yet work with Pharo. Hi all, Just an update. I just attended my third Smalltalk meet-up in Brisbane. It's a small group but hopefully we can grow as we gain momentum. We are just now setting up our team and initial project in Smalltalk Hub. We are meeting once a month in a great little venue by the river with free fast Wi-Fi and good cheap coffee. Voyage and attributes references
by Hilaire April 6, 2017

April 6, 2017

Hi, Here is another scenario where I have trouble with Voyage: Let's an object A, with an attribute an object Address. Then I create B, a copy of A. Of course the object Address is both an attribute of A and B. (no deep copy). As long as my Voyage repo is running, editing Address from A or B is doing fine: when editing Address from A, I can see this reflected in B's Address, as expected. Sadly, this Object scheme is lost in the persistency: when I reset the repo, shutdown it, restart it, to force a full retrieve from the Mongo repo, object A and B do not share anymore the Address object has it should be. I understand Voyage is not a true really Object Oriented repository, but is it possible to overcome such limitation? One idea will be to have collection of Address, but this really looks strange to me. I think Fuel was doing just fine with such scenario, but sadly Fuel is not reliable between images. Thanks to read up to here. Hilaire -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

PetitParser question parsing HTML meta tags
by PAUL DEBRUICKER April 5, 2017

April 5, 2017

This is kind of a "I'm tired of thinking about this and not making much progress for the amount of time I'm putting in question" but here it is: I'm trying to parse descriptions from HTML meta elements. I can't use Soup because there isn't a working GemStone port. I've got it to work with the structure: <meta name="description" content="my description"> and <meta name="Description" content="my description"> but I'm running into instances of: <meta http-equiv="description" content="my description"> and <meta http-equiv="Description" content="my description"> and am having trouble adapting my parsing code (such as it is). The parsing code that addresses the first two cases is: parseHtmlPageForDescription: htmlString | startParser endParser ppStream descParser result text lower str doubleQuoteIndex | lower := 'escription' asParser. startParser := '<meta name=' asParser , #'any' asParser , #'any' asParser. endParser := '>' asParser. ppStream := htmlString readStream asPetitStream. descParser := ((#'any' asParser starLazy: startParser , lower) , (#'any' asParser starLazy: endParser)) ==> #'second'. result := descParser parse: ppStream. text := (result inject: (WriteStream on: String new) into: [ :stream :char | stream nextPut: char. stream ]) contents trimBoth. str := text copyFrom: (text findString: 'content=') + 9 to: text size. doubleQuoteIndex := 8 - ((str last: 7) indexOf: $"). ^ str copyFrom: 1 to: str size - doubleQuoteIndex I can't figure out how to change the startParser parser to accept the second idiom. And maybe there's a better approach altogether. Anyway. If anyone has any ideas on different approaches I'd appreciate learning them. Thanks for giving it some thought Paul

Build Pharo VM with --dynamic-linker
by Alistair Grant April 5, 2017

April 5, 2017

Hi All, I'm still working on getting Pharo packaged with snapcraft. The latest hurdle is that 32 bit applications won't load correctly because the snapcraft environment means that ld-linux.so.2 isn't in the expected location. My understanding is that adding the appropriate --dynamic-linker flag should solve the problem, defining: export LDFLAGS="-Wl,--dynamic-linker=/snap/pharo/x1/lib/ld-linux.so.2" successfully builds, but the pharo executable still has the default location: $ strings pharo-vm/pharo | grep ld-linux /lib/ld-linux.so.2 Can someone point me to where I should modify the build scipt(s) so I can set --dynamic-linker appropriately? Thanks! Alistair
