Is possible to keep some code closed in Pharo?

IMHO, one important aspect to deliver comercial solutions for customers in an environment like Pharo is to be able to protect certain code or algorithms developed by the company. It possible to have some clases compiled and closed to the eyes of customers? Or it is posible to have some kind of access control to edit clases? A bit of context for my question. In the company I work for in Mexico we have been using a similar live coding environment for 30 years with great results. The environment we used until a couple of years ago is named G2 by Gensym; lisp based internally, with is own natural language like syntax for developers, with a very powerful backward ans forwards chaining rule engine, an excellent toolkit to create visual components and a wonderful VNC like and lightwaight client(Telewindows) that makes visual interactions with a remote G2 very easy with a very small bandwidth use. Until a couple of years ago, we developed on it tailor made supply chain solutions and mathematical models; since then we moved to Java and .NET. We wish we could stay with live coding, but the draw back with that platform we used is that is really expensive for customers and the company has been changing hands to more lawyer oriented owners, because of its installed based license fees and IP portfolio. So, getting to know Pharo makes me very enthusiastic about the possibility to move back to live coding. Thanks for the response. Bloc Example Errors & question

I was reviewing the Bloc examples because I'm looking for a way to connect several blocks like this: <http://forum.world.st/file/t370703/muestra.png> . The idea is that if I move the block, the link with other blocks is kept. I could not find any similar example. Any hint would be appreciated. And once I get the basics working, level up in getting it working in a VR headset. Is there anyone having a binding to a library for dealing with the sound part, like FMod or other things like that? I see this as a medium term project, so, like I can get it working by the end of the year. TIA Phil

Don't you consider releasing the new version (as I tried to update it by hand, it is not that easy, it has more components, to load HTTP I had to update Character-Encoding as well, so probably better if bumped as a group)? Problem with input to XML Parser - 'Invalid UTF8 encoding'

In another thread (on SVG Icons) Sven referred to ways of getting input from a URL for XMLDOMParser. I have recently had some problems doing this. I have found a workaround, so it is not urgent, but I thought I should put it on record in case anyone else is bitten by it, and so maybe Monty can look at it. I am using the subclass XMLHTMLParser, and my usual way of invoking it was: 1. XMLHTMLParser parseURL: <urlstring>. This works in most cases, but with one particular site - http://www.corriere.it/....., which is an Italian newspaper - I had frequent failures, with the error message 'Invalid UTF8 encoding'. The parser has the option of parsing a string, which is obtained by other means, so I tried reading it in with Zinc: 2. XMLHTMLParser parse: <urlstring> asZnUrl retrieveContents. And this worked, so clearly the encoding on the site is OK. I realised that the XML-Parser package has its own methods, which reproduce a lot of the functionality of Zinc, so I tried the equivalent: 3. XMLHTMLParser parse: <urlstring> asXMLURI get. To my surprise, this worked equally well. I had expected problems, because presumably forms (1) and (3) use the same UTF8 decoding. For now, I am using the form (3) for all my work, and have not had any problems since. So the message to anyone who is using the form (1) and getting problems is to try (2) or (3) instead. I am using Moose 6.1 (Pharo 6.0 Latest update: #60486) on Windows 10. I think most articles on the Corriere web site will generate the error, but one which has always failed for me is: http://www.corriere.it/esteri/17_ottobre_03/felipe-spagna-catalogna-discorso -8f7ac0d6-a86d-11e7-a090-96160224e787.shtml I tried to trace through the error using the debugger, but it got too confusing. However, I did establish that the failure occurred early in decoding the HTML <head>, in the line beginning <meta name="description".. How to recover selections in a fastlist after an update

Hi, I am using fastlists in a browser inspired from glmexamples, and when i use a stepping and that i update the browser (update method) all selections in lists are lost. Is there an automatic way to recover the selections or does it have to be handled in my code ? If so, i don't understand how to recover my selection, if i kept the fastlist in a var, doing list selection: myObject does not do anything. Steven.

Hi all, I just released a new version of the PharoLauncher 1.0.1. Here are major improvements since last version: Pharo launcher is now distributed with a Pharo 60 image with a 32-bits threaded VM (to avoid hangs when using OSProcess). Add a VM management utility able to find (and download) the appropriate VM for a given image. So, the launcher is NOT shipped anymore with an extra VM. It will fetch required VM when needed. Pharo Launcher files (images, VMs) are now considered as user Documents (easier to find). Consequently, they are now stored in the standard documents folder, i.e. $HOME/Documents/Pharo on OS X, $HOME/My Documents/Pharo on windows, $HOME/Pharo on Linux (some linux distributions provide a document folder but some others not, so we put it in the HOME directory in all cases). In this folder, you will find your images and virtual machines needed to run images. Use of ProcessWrapper to run images on Windows. Adds download of sources file for Pharo images > 60. Left panel is now used for official images and Jenkins jobs templates and right panel is used for local images. New mooc entry with the image ready to start the Pharo Mooc. New deprecated category to find old official Pharo images. Use system unzip when possible (Pharo unzip does not manage file permissions nor symbolic links). Hello, A bit late, there is a Libusb [1] binding (using UFFI) and support for the Human Interface Device [2] (that uses the binding but is written in pure Smalltalk) for Pharo. Everything is on the github repository [3]. Â« Install Â» and Â« Quick start Â» sections give you all you need to start using the project. One could also have a look at the wiki [4]. It works on Linux but hasnât been tested on Mac OS nor Windows (it should work since libusb library works on these platforms). Do not forget to install the 32 bits versions of libusb on your computer. The purpose of this library is to provide the ability to use USB devices directly from Pharo. Custom URI scheme for Pharo

Hi, Is there any support from the VM/Application package to add custom URI schemes to listen to from within Pharo? I would like to have a hyperlink like âpharo://send?data=fancypantsâ <pharo://send?data=fancypants%E2%80%99> in an arbitrary document that, when clicked, switches to Pharo and calls a hook I can register. Could someone give me a hint how to achieve that, or do I have to build a little bridge application that handles the scheme registration and talks with Pharo through another channel? how to update a pane in a customized inspector

Hi, I am trying to customize an inspector with a code browser, and I have in a compose method of my own browser the following: [...] browser transmit from: #methods; fromOutsidePort: #entity; to: #source; when: [ :method | method notNil ]; andShow: [ :a :method :object | self sourceOf: method for: object in: a ]. browser transmit from: #links; fromOutsidePort: #entity; to: #selectedLink; when: [ :link | link notNil ]; andShow: [ :a :link | self inspectSelectedLink: link inPresenter: a ]. [...] Is there an easy way to update the #source pane whenever one of my links is selected in my #link pane ? In my case, the source code is displayed first, and when i select a link in the #link pane i want to highlight specific parts of this source code and the easiest way would be to re-trigger the first block above. I did not try it, but it seems that i could retrieve the #source pane and the selected method manually and re-trigger the method from the second block (i.e. when a link is selected), but i am not sure that is the right way to do it... Also i was wondering if there was a video of the moldable inspector tutorial from pharo days 17 somewhere on the web, because i did not find it on youtube.

FileReference#entries caching?

Heya folks, I'm loading some PNG icons from disk, and I'm noticing some weirdness with FileReference#entries. When I inspect: '/home/srbaker/Projects/FocusFrog/icons' asFileReference entries it gives me an Array of size one, containing the refernce to the only file there. Then I delete the file, the same thing gives an array of size zero. But then when I fill the directory with a bunch of icons (240, to be exact), and inspect that line again I get zero. Eventually it gets the right answer. Is it cached or something? How do I guarantee that I'm *definitely* getting the current state of the directory on disk? Should I not even be using FileReference for this? Thanks! -Steven

Can't find Cairo

Heya, I need some help telling Pharo where to find things. I've installed Bloc into my image, and it can't find cairo. Cairo is installed, but as far as I can tell Bloc is not looking for it in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ which is where it can be found. I don't care to go making symlinks around my system: is there a sensible way to tell Pharo where to find libcairo? Thanks! -Steven

Hello! I try to deploy UDBCSQLite-using image in a 32bit ubuntu 16.04.3. Hi, I have looked at Scale b/c of different question, and I see it uses futures. I'd like to ask if those futures are one-off, or is there any consensus on how futures should look like in Pharo. The reason I ask is b/c Amber already has something like that - Promises, which do not use the native JS API directly (though it is inspired), but do have an API of their own; and since those concepts seems to be similar (or maybe are the same, just called differently), if the API used shouldn't be sort-of standardized / used the same way in all occasions. Hey all! Thanks for the help on all of my little issues. I've been plugging away at FocusFrog, my application for Getting Things Done.Â I have pushed the current code (mostly UI stuff in there just now) to GitLab: https://gitlab.com/srbaker/FocusFrog I am not sure how to manage projects, or even how someone goes about importing this stuff. If anyone of you cares to pull that down and provide suggestions, I will be more than happy to take them! Currently, I'm fixing up the view switching when you click the sidebar buttons, and improving the task item views. Is there a document somewhere about how you're supposed to publish things for Pharo? I think this deserves a seperate thread by itself, I was wondering what tricks , ideas and workflows you guys have come up with using live coding in Pharo ? What you like ? what you dont like ? What kinda of libraries you have made to enhance your live coding workflow ? What ideas you have that could enhance live coding workflow , inside and outside Pharo ? Any opinion is welcomed whether you just started coding in Pharo or coding in it for many years , I welcome any kind of brainstorming as long as it is relevant to live coding itself. Offray already was kind enough to share his workflow but I am sure other have something to add as well Its important to share because I am thinking of making a special mention in the Pharo wiki about live coding workflows so anything you share will be copy pasted there to help other people to get deeper into live coding If you can please offer practical examples , will make it easier for me and others to understand. Hi, Well, our redhat 6.9 systems have 2.12, so, that qualifies. And yes, we still have RedHat 6, and 6.9 was released only 6 months ago! Â It will finish extended support in a mind-blowing 7 more years in 2024. Redhat 5, still supported for another 3 years till 2020 has glibc 2.5. cheers bruce

https://github.com/guillep/Scale is quite cool for quick scripts on *nix. Now for embeddable, yes it would help. Bootstrapping will be helpful but the current main issue is the VM interpret loop that is in the current VMs. It is not an intrinsic problem. Telepharo is also a great step to enable that to exist. [ANN] OSSubprocess Bugfix and enhancements release

Dear all, I have just released a new bugfix and enhancements release v0.2.5 for OSSubprocess as you can see in [1]. This new release is thanks to the awesome work of Guillermo Polito [2]. He found a problem (and a fix) that would hung/block the Pharo image in a wait state. This problem has been forever and I have faced it myself. It would only happen when using #waitForExit and under certain scenario. Because of that, I recommend everyone to move to this release. Aside from that serious bug, he has also done quite some improvements in the tests and in the Travis setup. Once this PR [3] has been merged and SmalltalkCI updated, our Travis build [4] should show all green builds for Linux/OSX and Pharo 5.0 and 6.1. I have also copied the configuration into Pharo 5.0 and 6.0 catalog so as of tomorrow, it should be there. Organisation and workflows

Heya folks, [Please jump on any of my statements that sound crazy: use of Spec, other assumptions, etc.] I'm starting an application in Pharo, using Spec. Basically, a GTD application in the spirit of nirvanahq, omnifocus, things, nozbe. The code is working just fine, but I'm left with a lot of questions about how to organize it. First, is there some trick to managing images? Are people using one-per-project, or one-per-computer? All of the above? Anyone using PharoLauncher these days? Other tools? I'm assuming that the current state of the art is Iceberg; where can I find a "This is how you should organize your project using Iceberg" document, blog, book, tutorial, video, or otherwise. Once the application is done, I assume I'll want to ship it in a minimal Pharo image. Is there documentation or prior art on this? Finally, is there a way to run and capture keybindings globally? I have one part of my application (a quick-entry window) which I want summoned from a global (OS-wide) hotkey. Has this been done before? Or is it not easy to break the fourth wall, so to speak, and register a global keybinding from inside the VM? Thanks! -Steven

Creating a new method

Hi, I may be asking an absolute noob question but I was unable to find any useful hints on google ... I often find myself writing methods that do not yet exist when implementing other methods, e.g. when I'm writing the implementation of methodA I'm calling out to methodB. What's the easiest way to create the new method? I know I can jump aroung through hoops with a separate browser but that feels cumbersome. I understand that the editor/runtime/whatever cannot know 100% of the time where to put the new method but at least for messages to self it should be smart enough to offer some kind of help. -dirk

ZnClient in Pharo 6.1 not working for Https on Windows

I was trying to Soup on Windows 7 and found I could not access https sites On windows 7 and 10 the following code fails: ZnEasy get:'https://genius.com/Alice-nuvole-lyrics'. This works fine in Pharo 5 on Windows. Also works fine with Pharo 6.1 (32 bit) on Linux. The problem is Pharo 6.1 on Windows. The error is: "SSL/TLS plugin initialization failed (VM plugin missing ? OS libraries missing ?)" Deploying on Linux with LibC version < 2.15

Hi, I am migrating some applications from Pharo 4 to Pharo 6. The new deployment of those applications needs to work on linux with LibC < 2.15. With Pharo 4 there was a special VM[1]. I do not see such VM for Pharo 6. How should we manage those distributions? Thank you in advance. SVG Icons

SystemVersion cleanup (or the return of the explicit build number) in latest Pharo 7

Hi, as you all know Pharo 7 is built using sources from github and a new bootstrap process. The first Pharo 7 images [1] unfortunately were hard to distinguish - the initial problem was described in [2] Guille tried to address this by adding a build number again [3] but unfortunately he mixed it into the existing suffix of the class SystemVersion. There was also some other trouble afterwards: - the highestUpdate was still not set by the bootstrap process, which made some code unloadable (like Artefact who's config is checking if it is above a certain update number) - with Guilles fix the build number had to be parsed from the suffix string - one was still not able to distinguish 32/64 bit images - the SystemVersion class and the according tests were still ugly So I reviewed all this more deeply and cleaned SystemVersion as well as the tests while trying to stay as compatible as possible. Thanks a lot to Pavel and Esteban who helped me sorting things out, especially in git and the bootstrap process. How does it look now ==================== 1. Our system type is still called "Pharo" ;) SystemVersion current type -> 'Pharo' 2. we still continue with major and minor versioning (leaving out patch versions), so currently work is done for Pharo 7.0 SystemVersion current major -> 7 SystemVersion current minor -> 0 SystemVersion current majorMinorVersion -> 'Pharo7.0' 3. the identification string now has a "+" sign inside to separate the build meta informations following the given rule 10 from http://semver.org So the full image version now looks like this: SystemVersion current imageVersionString -> 'Pharo-7.0+alpha.build.168.sha.30fc9bbe79922877706ecd842f8aef6822cdcdd9 (32 Bit)' 4. the suffix is currently "alpha" and may be changed depending on release status SystemVersion current suffix -> 'alpha' 5. the build number is stored as an explicit ivar in SystemVersion now SystemVersion current build -> 168 Note that the build number is explicitly set during the bootstrap process from the outside and increased over time with each new build. SystemVersion current highestUpdate -> "70168" We might easily catch the 999 build mark now and then run into 71000 which might still be Pharo 7.0 instead of 7.1. (which means first two digits of update number will then NOT correspond to major/minor version anymore). So better avoid #highestUpdate as a meaningful number for loading code or other. - also note if you contribute with an own PR (in your own fork on github) the build number is the build number of you PR specific CI build. Once your PR is reviewed and merged it is the regular Pharo image build number again. - you can reuse SystemVersion for you own apps built on top of Pharo: "MyKillerApp-1.0+beta (64 Bit)" can be easily created with: (SystemVersion major: 1 minor: 0 suffix: 'beta') type: 'MyKillerApp'; yourself - if you report a bug on bugs.pharo.org it would be good to note down the full version of the image you used as found in the About box. Open Sourcing the Data Journalism Handbook with Grafoscopio

Hi, Recently, in our local hackerspace <http://hackbo.co/>, we used, extended and adapted, Grafoscopio <http://mutabit.com/grafoscopio/index.en.html> to recreate the first open source version of the Data Journalism Handbook <http://datajournalismhandbook.org/>, in Spanish. Quoting from the project page: There are some interesting Free Cultural Works <http://freedomdefined.org/Definition> which are not open sourced. This means that, they are covered under pretty liberal licenses, allowing their remix, sale and modification, but the infrastructures which support the creation, modification and publishing of such works, donât allow wide participation and deep traceability of their history of such collective endeavors. This is our approach about alternative ways for creating such works, addressing the above problem, using the Data Journalism Handbook as an example (English <http://datajournalismhandbook.org/>, Spanish <http://interactivos.lanacion.com.ar/manual-data/>) and /pocket infrastructures/, which are simple, self contained, and work well on-line and off-line, like Fossil <http://fossil-scm.org/> and Grafoscopio <http://mutabit.com/grafoscopio/index.en.html>. Also we extended and adapted Grafoscopio, during this project, to make the tool suit the problem (and not the usual other way around). 6.1 Stable 64 - Crash when loading repository

On a clean image from get.pharo.org/64/ Attempting to load the following repository Metacello new baseline: 'WillowBootstrap'; repository: 'github://ba-st/Willow-Bootstrap:master/source'; load. Consistently causes a VM crash (crash.dump in attatchment). This does not happen with the 32 bit image. Heya, I'm trying to build a Pharo Launcher of my own, but I can't find the code. This says it's on SmalltalkHub: https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo-launcher, but the link doesn't show anything. I tried looking on CI for the build script, but I can't find the build script, just build results. What I'm looking for is how to check out, build, and run Pharo Launcher from scratch. Reading a text file line by line

Hi, I'm trying to get started with Pharo doing something really simple - at least that's what I thought ... I'm trying to read a text file line by line. If I use File named: '/tmp/linex.txt' readStream nextLine I'll get a debugger telling me that BinaryFileStream does not understand nextLine. Now I've tried my best to find a stream that may be reading plain text lines but to no avail ... Help! -dirk

Pharo 7 license question

Hello, Pharo 7 to my understanding fundamentally changes Pharo. It is my understanding that Pharo 7 starts with a core Pharo kernel and like many languages out there, imports or adds code from a variety of external sources to the image being built. With that understanding, I am curious if that would allow for inclusion of a specific library/module to be licensed as GPL? And it not affect the other code in the composed image? I am a big believer in the MIT/BSD license and not a big fan of the GPL. However, there is software out there that I have avoided looking at the source code or attempting to port it to Pharo because it is GPL. I would sincerely love if I could now port such a library and license it under the GPL as required, and it not affect any other code outside of that specific library. I am not a lawyer. Nor do I know any lawyers. Is is possible for someone to get a reasonably definitive answer on this question? I am sure I am not the only one who has had this desire. I am also sure that I am not the only one who will have this question in the future. So it would be nice to have a proper legal response that could possibly be explicitly stated somewhere on the website or on an FAQ or something. Regardless of the answer, yes or no. It does need to be a settled issue for Pharo. That way someone could know if GPL/LGPL or whatever software could be in the catalog. Just wanted to put that out there to the community. Hi All, I'm a very beginner with smalltalk. I am building a small seaside app for controlling wifi access of my teenagers kids. In this app I need to start or stop the wifi acces at a given time. For the moment I'm doing it with an infinite loop in a process, with this code: WifiController >> startScheduler ^ SchedulerProcess ifNil: [ SchedulerProcess := [ [ true ] whileTrue: [ self schedulerApplyAutoStartStopRules. 56 seconds wait ] ] forkNamed: 'DanWifiManagerScheduler' ] I'm wondering if there is a way to do this without this infinite loop ? May be there is a class in the standard pharo image that can execute a code block at a given time ? Thanks, Daniel

"Leaking" CommandLineHandler when running headless image

Hi, I am currently trying to run one of my images as non-root and related to that look into keeping changes in a different directory or not writing them at all. While looking at a write failure I saw some paths being logged that I used during CI to load code and should have been GCed. Observation: Pharo --headless My.image eval "Smalltalk garbageCollect. CommandLineHandler allSubInstances size" 84 Pharo --headfull My.image eval "Smalltalk garbageCollect. CommandLineHandler allSubInstances size" 2 As part of the CommandLineHandler allSubInstances there are eight LoadUpdatesCommandLineHandler still active. I would assume that a full GC should have collected them by now (some of them being created in May). In a headfull image they disappear quickly I varied the execution a bit: Pharo --headless RoamingHub.image eval --no-quit "[ Smalltalk garbageCollect. FileStream stdout print: CommandLineHandler allSubInstances size; lf. All help topics (subclasses of CustomHelp) have all the content on the class-side. This seems very weird to me, because the class-side should about managing the meta, not containing the content itself. It feels weird. Peter

Hiding the cursor in pharo and/or bloc

Hi, i've been playing with bloc, and i am trying to completely remove the cursor (i.e. always display a blank cursor). I can't find how. Removing the Pharo cursor would also be ok, but i can't either. I can only show a blank cursor for a few moments but after moving the mouse too much it becomes normal again. I have tried: Cursor currentCursor: Cursor blank (seems not to work ?) Cursor blank beCursor (works for a few moments only...) Any way to do that permanently ? Steven.

Spec "bindings"

Hello, I was wondering what more experienced users than myself thought of the idea of an explicit Spec "connection point" to a domain model object similar to Dolphin's "showOn:" method, like: CounterApp showOn: counter. This would perhaps trigger something like Dolphin's Presenter>>model: message (although I've always found the use of "model" confusing when there are so many "models" involved.) after the widgets had been created: ComposableModel>>initializeBindings: anObject In many cases, if your domain model uses ValueHolders as well (like Spec does), making a connection could just mean replacing the Spec ValueHolder with your domain ValueHolder so changes to the domain model would automatically propagate to the UI presentation without providing explicit code in ComposableModel>>initializePresenter. However, since I am still trying to understand and learn Spec, it's quite possible I am missing some key point and there are reasons not to explore this line of thinking! Thank you, Rob

Testing a Unicode Character's Category

The Pharo image has a table of Unicode Character Categories in a class variable GeneralCategory of class Unicode. But there do not seem to be many methods to interpret this data. For example, while there is a method Unicode class >> #isDigit: aCharacter that checks if the Unicode category of aCharacter is Nd, and Unicode class >> #isLetter: aCharacter that checks if aCharacter is in one of the letter categories, there does not seem to be a general way of asking âwhat is the category of this characterâ. I want to check if a character is a mathematical symbol, that is, if it is in the Unicode Category Sm. Whatâs the right way of doing this? Would it be reasonable to add a method Unicode class >> #category: aCharacter that answers one of the 29 category symbols #Cc to #Zs? Or âisâ methods for each category? Andrew

Roasssal not working on Windows with Pharo 6.1

Is it just me or my systems but is there a major problem with Roassal on Pharo 6.1 on Windows? At work on my Windows 7 machine, Roassal installs from the catalog browser but the examples will not run. I get an error - External module not found. it seems to be looking for the Surface dll which is definitely present in the pharo folder. On my Windows 10 netbook, Roassal will not even install from the catalog browser. It starts to install then comes up with an unhelpful "something has gone wrong" message.
