doesNotUnderstand: infinit loop

Hi, My Pharo4.0 image is in a situation where each MNU exception throw from a DNU result in infinite loop, locking the image, even not breakable with alt+[.]. >From the doesNotUnderstand: message, the "exception reachedDefaultHandler" always returns true, and it results in the execution of the true block, sending again the original message to the original object, repeating a DNU and so on. Any idea how to fix that? Moving from Slack to Discord

I have been aware about Discord for some time now , but I never used it because both Pharo and Unreal channels are on Slack. From my small experience with it, it seemed much more superior to Slack with added bonus that is completely free (open source ) and with no restrictions unlike Slack. But something happened suddenly yesterday, I opened Unreal in Slack and it was gone with a notification that they moved to Discord. So I grabbed this opportunity to create a Pharo server you can join here https://discord.gg/F6nAd Discord works as web apps but also you can download as an app for Windows, Macos , iOS and Android. I will be around in Discord because I generally browser Unreal channels. The nice thing about Discord also is that it offers both audio and video chat for free which can work great for Pharo sprints. Anyway there is no harm on testing it.

Coding XPath as Smalltalk

Hello I am using XPath as a way of dissecting web pages, especially from Wiktionary. Generally I get good results, but I could get useful extra flexibility by using the binary Smalltalk operators to represent XPath, as mentioned at the end of the class comment for XPath. However, the description there is very terse, and I am having difficulty seeing how to include more complex expressions, especially attribute tests. I have put some of my XPath expressions through the XPath compiler and looked at the output, and out of that I have found expressions which work but look very clumsy. As an example, I have used the fragment: document xPath: '//div[@id=''catlinks'']//li//text()' and found that an equivalent is: document //'div' ?? [:node :x :y|(node attributeAt: 'id') = 'catlinks']//'li'//[:n| n isStringNode]]. (I had to put two dummy arguments in the three-argument block to get it to work.) Is there a more extensive explanation of the use of these binary operators? If not, could some kind person show me the most concise translation of the sample XPath above, to give me a start in working out more complex cases? Many thanks for any help. Peter Kenny

A Suggested Promotion

I have a suggestion for future Smalltalk advocates... The advent of Pi Zero last month is an interesting opportunity. This is a very, very cheap Raspberry Pi. Anyone can afford it. I'm thinking of kids, in particular. What if we could get kids to delve into Squeak or Pharo (Squeak is better optimized for Raspberry Pi) via the Pi Zero? A competition could be set up in various countries, such as Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, etc., where the best student submission for a Smalltalk-based Pi Zero application would win a small scholarship prize (say, $500). A panel of judges in each country would decide the winner. The contest would be much less ambitious than my now-defunct Canadian Smalltalk Competition <https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1520902870/canadian-smalltalk-competit…> (CSC). Less control (no real need to prevent cheating). Easier to raise the prize money. The nice thing is that it would be a multi-national promotion (it's tough getting a national school competition like CSC going in other countries). Of course, because it's less ambitious, we can expect to reach fewer kids. Instead of thousands, probably more like hundreds. I could be totally wrong on this; I could be totally surprised! FUEL not working

Hi guys, Maybe I am doing something terribly stupid but FUEL is not correctly serializing a Set. I uploaded a video so you can check: https://youtu.be/wAQgbkqAXtk As you can see, there is 1 new object in the Set, on serialization the file grows, but on materialization the new object is not present. [ALERT] Pharo by Example version 5 is about to be released

In case someone missed it I will be doing a release for version 5 (pharo version = pbe version) this weekend , since we had Pharo 7 initiated few days ago. Essentially that means that the repo will be tagged for version 5, which means a git commit is associated as a last commit for that version and there will be a frozen release - download for Pharo by Example version 5. After that we move to Pharo By Example version 6 or PBE6 for short The repo wont change otherwise and the process of submitting commits, pull requests and issues remains the same. If you have found a flaw of any sort in the documentation , please open an issue in the github issue tracker that can be found here https://github.com/SquareBracketAssociates/UpdatedPharoByExample/issues I will try to fix any problem reported but if I cannot , the fix will have to move to version 6 As always thanks to all people contributing into the impossible .... making Pharo more amazing If you want to contribute feel free to do so with a pull request. Does not matter if you are beginner because even minor corrections like correcting mistakes in the grammar or content of the text, updated pictures, or just a few lines of extra info are more than enough and more than welcomed. Hm, I don't know what exactly happens. It seems this behavior started with Pharo 50574. Since that image version, the UUIDGenerator will be reset on startup. Maybe the initialization of the uuidgenerator (or the random seed) will access the filesystem and at this step the file system initialization traps into an infinit loop. What I don't understand is, why this only happens when the image was saved on a windows platform and reopened on a unix platform. Maybe, saving the image (or the shutDownList) does not fully cleanup the platform settings. [ANN] Introspect web content (Soup with some GT extensions)

Hi, I added a few GT inspector extensions to Soup and cleaned up a little bit. Released as a new version 1.8 of Soup - you will find easily in Catalog for Pharo 5 or by opening Spotter and entering "Soup" to load. As the attached screenshots shows you now have a nice way to introspect the structure of a web page as a tree in the inspector or see the attributes of tags/nodes in a table. Thx T.
