Pharo and VPS

Hello, I am exploring getting a VPS similar to the 1GB option. https://www.linode.com/pricing I have not selected a company or service at this time so this is simply an example and one of my options. I have not used such a service before. How suitable is Pharo currently for such an use case? Will Pharo and its polling and constant minimum cpu usage be a problem? I am wanting to learn to use VPS/Cloud services. I am wanting to play with a web server, wiki, blog. I want control of my tools and not the standard LAMP setup that so commonly offered. Any wisdom on Pharo in such an environment, pros and cons, greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jimmie

Renaming a Class triggers debugger

Hello, I'm running pharo 4 and I'm having a problem. I recently renamed a class using the rename: menu item in the standard system browser (I believe it's called Nautilus) and now I am getting uncaught exceptions whenever I add or remove a method (three debugger windows pop up). Pharo 4 debugger

In Pharo 3.0 there was a Add/Remove breakpoint (experimental) method popup menu option. I do not see this capability in version 4.0. Is this feature still available or has it been removed? If still available, then how does one get it instantiated? inspect playground history

Could we have an entry in the Playground history that says "Inspect history"? Because using this is guesswork So what I do instead is I inspect the MenuMorph and dig out the contents [[[ "a MenuMorph(203423744)" self menuItems collect: [ :each | (each target action outerContext tempNamed: #each) content asString. ]. ]]] â âThis is more useful, however a button would be nicer. :) Thanks, Peter

Some news from the growing pharo teacher front

Hi guys I want to let you know that there will be a new pharo lecture in YaoundÃ©. I presented Pharo during a seminar and the previous minister of education was there and asked us to do a lecture. In June we did it with Damien C. by skype. And now there is an official lecture at YaoundÃ© given by Prof. Metalagia. This is an excellent news. I will give some lectures in december there. In Togo my first visit was quite successful: 120 participants to the conferences I gave (it was still vacation time there). There were 60 students following lectures from 8h to 17h during 4 days... Yes I'm exhausted ;) A new Pharo lecture will start in north Togo. I will go back in December. One of the idea is to help students to get good in Pharo and pharo web stack and build web apps and other. I hope that we can have within 2/3 year There is a competition AppTogo. People are learning C# and others. I hope that some students will compete with Pharo so I will be looking for potential mentors to help them. Giving them advices, pointing them to the right solution/framework and may be a bit of pair rogramming if skype works. I distributed the Pharo Starter Kit (we will announce it officially now that I have 10 gb space on my server) People love the Youtube videos folder I'm collecting. Yes internet is a pain there. Exploring Pier

Hello, I am interested in learning to use Pier. I browsed the mailing list to learn about current status and documentation. It seems to be pretty quiet on the mailing lists. There seems to be some activity on Smalltalkhub on Pier3. I am interested to see how well supported Pier is (is going to be). And if Pier is still active in the community. Is there any current documentation and where? Thanks for any help and opinions regarding Pier and its current and future situation. Jimmie

Hi Peter, This is similar to what I was thinking of delving into, although I was thinking differently than file-sharing. I was thinking more modified blockchain sharing. My plans are to revive an old project of mine: http://www.squeaksource.com/squeakelib/, which depends on Cryptography. I am interested in implementing NIO as well. This is all infrastructure stuff, layers 4, 5 and 6. WebSockets may be all you need. As any flow system needs a control layer, add a couple of layers above the application layer: market/cloud and meta layers, used to contain apps and specify the peer2peer graph and formats.
