Hi, I'm trying to do a visualization that shows a group of twitter users connected to each other. It shows the images from the users but when i add the edges, the images dissapear. Here's the code: view := RTView new. e1 := RTElement on: user1. e2 := RTElement on: user2. elements := OrderedCollection newFrom: {e1. e2}. elements do: [ :e | | label shape form edge | label := RTLabel new text: e1 model name. form := Form fromFileNamed: 'aFilename'. shape := RTBitmap new form: form. e + (RTVerticalCompositeShape new shape1: shape; shape2: label) ]. line := RTArrow new color: Color red. view add: (line edgeFrom: e1 to: e2 ). view addAll: elements. view open. View without edges <http://forum.world.st/file/n4762851/withoutEdges.png> View with edges <http://forum.world.st/file/n4762851/withEdges.png> Anyone know how to fix this (show both images and edges)?? I am trying to look at the annotation typing used in Gradualtalk, but I am having no success. I download the gradualtalk. zip and what I think is the correct Cog VM, but when I run Croquet I do not see any window; I do see the application running in the Task Manager. I am trying to install it on a computer running Windows Vista. The files in the Gradualtalk directory are: Croquet.exe created 4 Oct 2010 Croquet.ini Croquet.map Gradualtalk.changes created 3 12 2013 Gradualtalk.image PharoDebug.log SqueadFFIPrims.dll stderr Win32OSProcessPlugin.dll Both stderr and PharoDebug.log were created when I attempted the run. The PharoDebug.log has the following: THERE_BE_DRAGONS_HERE ==== Startup Error: MessageNotUnderstood: receiver of "do:" is nil 11 June 2014 9:36:03.002 am VM: Win32 - IX86 - 6.0 - Any help would be appreciated. Would I have more success on a Mac? bw PS: Will the annotation typing be included in a future Pharo releases?

[ANN] Base62/Base36
by Norbert Hartl June 12, 2014

June 12, 2014

Just for the record. Iâve uploaded a package to smalltalkhub that contains util classes to en-/decode values into/from Base62/Base36. Base62/Base36 encode numbers in short strings. These are used e.g. by url shortener services from google, bit.ly etc. Base36 uses lowercase letters and numbers to encode, Base62 uses all characters from Base36 plus all uppercase letters. Base62 produces smaller strings while Base36 produces case insensitive ones. Example: Base62 fromNumber: 100000 -> 'q0Uâ Base36 fromNumber: 100000 -> â255s' FYI, Norbert

Base64 encoding + UTF8 ?

I might hit some problem with Base64 encoding in there. It seems that Pharo does not use UTF8 for its Base64 encoding. I'm probably missing something related to Base64 encoding... Slots
by Bob Williams June 9, 2014

June 9, 2014

Camille and Marcus, thank you for your response. I thought something was missing, so the testing of Slots will be shelved for now; however, while it is in the planning stage, I would like to add some thoughts on targets and deliverable products (applications). I agree that most devices like the iPad and iPhone would not be suitable for development, they should be targets for application development and I would expand that list to include all devices, even micro-controllers. Look at the development process for the iPad and iPhone, the programming is done on a Mac using Xcode and testing is done first on the simulator running on the Mac and latter on the actual device. I find the Xcode environment inferior to Smalltalk's and by no stretch of the imagination is Objective-C a good substitute for Smalltalk. I think that development of application programs could be done far better with Smalltalk, provided that some tools were added to Smalltalk. Why not have the view, if it can be programmed in C then it can be programmed in Smalltalk. I think that the application process should be viewed as a series of steps culminating in the production of a product for sale or distribution: develop and test the program logic, test using constraints imposed by the target device, performance testing, test on the target device, and package for sale or distribution. A good examples of the second step where the constraints of the target is imposed are the word size and floating-point precision differences found in the target. If the development of the application is on a 64-bit computer then integer and floating-point calculated must be simulated for targets with smaller word size and for 32-bit floating-point or no floating-point processor. Implicit in those steps is the notion a gradual typing, the first uses the Smalltalk model to generically test the logic of the program, while the final step would require a fully compiled executable for some of the targets. I would argue that one reason that Smalltalk was not a commercial success was that you could not provide a fully compiled executable to the customer. The tools that the Smalltalk environment provides makes it a very productive application development environment, but of what use are they to the end user of the application, say a clerk or a business executive: why should any of the development tools be in the final product? It is clear that Slots will be used in the enforcement of typing at the instance variable level, but what about temporary variables? Can a compiler (machine not bytecode) be developed if temporary variables are not typed? Then there is the question of how to handle the elements of heterogeneous collections. I have more thoughts, but the above are related to Slots. Any comments? bw

Pillar compile.sh
by Ben Coman June 8, 2014

June 8, 2014

Hi all, ./compile.sh can be passed a parameter to compile only a specific file rather than the whole book. Now I consider this probably only occurs during development with a human executing the script (rather than some CI process which will be processing the whole book) and I'm finding it useful to automatically fire off a PDF Viewer on the generated file, as per the line below tagged "ADDED". if [[ $# -eq 1 ]]; then dir=$(dirname "$1") # e.g., Zinc pier_file=$(basename "$1") # e.g., Zinc.pier pillar_one "$1" produce_pdf "${dir}" "${pier_file}" open "${dir}"/"${pier_file}".pdf # <----ADDED else pillar_all compile_chapters compile_latex_book fi Is this something others would find useful? or can you see issues with it? Having this mod makes my working area dirty, and 'git clean' blows it away - so I'd like to integrate something like it. Now the above works for me on OSX, but for flexibility to deal with other platforms, the "open" command could be replaced with an environment variable, and do nothing if environment variable does not exist. What do you think? cheers -ben

Slots
by Bob Williams June 8, 2014

June 8, 2014

I am trying to duplicate the typed slot example in the paper "Flexible Object Layout". I did create the classes for TypedSlot and FloatSlot, but I am trying to find the best way to set the type for class FloatSlot to the class Float. In the example in the paper it appears to be set at the time the class is created however that does not seem to be an option when using PharoClassInstaller. I was thinking about using some form of lazy initialization, but is there a better way; a method anticipated by the Pharo 3 designers? I used: PharoClassInstaller make: [ :aSCB | aSCB superclass: Slot; name: #TypedSlot; slots: #(type); category: 'BW-Testing' ]. PharoClassInstaller make: [ :aSCB | aSCB superclass: TypedSlot; name: #FloatSlot; category: 'BW-Testing' ]. bw

HTML5 Generation
by Larry Staton Jr. June 4, 2014

June 4, 2014

Iâm writing an implementation of Webmachine[1] in Pharo and Iâm at the point where I need to generate some resources. Webmachine does not care how you represent your resources, so Iâm looking for a way to represent my resources in text/html (or application/xml+xhtml). In Ruby, I use ROAR[2] with Webmachine to represent my resources[3]. I really like how Seaside lets you programmatically construct HTML, but Iâm not sure if I can just pull in the HTML generation and leave out the rest. Is this possible or do I have to recreate ROAR in Smalltalk (which isnât a bad idea!)? Re: [Pharo-users] Form editor
by Stephan Eggermont June 4, 2014

Hi Phil, I mostly just use Gimp, but that is not a very efficient and effective solution. Most icons, especially those in flat styles, should be rendered/generated from a vector format instead of from a bitmap. They should be programmed, to be themable. Fontographer is actually a much better tool for the kind of icons found in bootstrap like styles Stephan

NeoJSON mapping of nil properties
by Esteban A. Maringolo June 2, 2014

June 2, 2014

Hi all... and Sven ;-) I'm mapping my objects with NeoJSONWriter, and I found it is not writing the properties whose values are null. NeoJSONPropertyMapping>>#writeObject: anObject on: jsonMapWriter | value | value := getter value: anObject. value ifNotNil: [ jsonMapWriter writeKey: propertyName value: value as: valueSchema ] It is a good default (saves space, and cpu cycles). But in my case the consumer of the JSON objects expect the objects to have all the attributes previously defined. Is there a way I can configure the mapper or the mapping to write null when the value is nil? Thank you! Esteban A. Maringolo
