About validation
by Stéphane Ducasse March 11, 2018

March 11, 2018

Hi I read the chapter on validation of the mentoring course book of andres valloud. http://www.lulu.com/fr/fr/shop/andres-valloud/a-mentoring-course-on-smallta… And I love this extension of SUnit. I loved the idea when I saw it for the first time at Lugano (presentation of Leandro Caniglia). I encourage everybody to read it. Now does anybody implemented in Pharo the SUnit extension? I would like to play with it and eventually write a chapter on it for the next book. The idea is so good. Stef

New Pharo based solution in the wild
by Esteban A. Maringolo Sept. 8, 2015

Sept. 8, 2015

Hi all, After one year of negotiations (demos, quotes, etc.) and a couple of months of development, by the end of December we released a pilot version of our pharo based solution. The solution consists of a native mobile app (Android), with Pharo 2.0 servers, using Seaside for the web UI, Seaside-REST for the mobile app API and Zinc Websockets to certain "live" features of the web. The persistence is GLORP using the native PostgreSQL driver. I can't disclose much more about the customer or the solution yet, it is a private solution for a multinational consumer goods company operating in Argentina. But I can comment on the numbers: * The pilot will end in ~40 days * It involves 50 mobile users of the Android app using it daily. * An nginx frontend for static files and http proxying to the pharo app servers * Two pharo images as servers, one for the web interface, and one for the REST API. The image is the same, they work as two separate app servers to make use of each server and for improved reliability (I don't want the seaside failures, which has been none yet, to affect the REST API). * Everything running in DigitalOcean droplets based in NYC (they add ~180ms of latency from here but their price/value equations is unmatched). Some performance numbers: * The Pharo server uptime has been no less than perfect, the first 10 days with uninterrupted uptime. Only shutdown to upgrade the image (yesterday night). * The load is minor, with peaks of ~30 concurrent mobile users during a few "business" moments of the day, the server never passed 15% of CPU use. The disk I/O is also small, but the database is small too (growing daily). If the pilot succeeds the plan is to extend the user base to ~1000 mobile users. But some water must pass under the bridge before thinking of that. And if it ever happens, it is going to be gradual. Some anecdotal info I quit my Smalltalk full time job at InfOil (after 9 years of employment) to dedicate 100% to my new company. So I'm betting big on this. By now I'm the sole Smalltalk developer (devops?) of the company. Time has never been more scarce than nowadays. Why Pharo? * Because it is the best open source Smalltalk ("inspired") out there. * Because I have 10+ years of experience with Smalltalk I can't throw away in the context of rapid prototyping and business domain modelling (emphasis on this). * It was a key advantage during the negotiations, we could show a wireframed live app even before our competition prepared a PowerPoint presentation. The development process with Pharo has been rudimentary, only Monticello packages and a couple of workspace scripts to provision new images. I still can't get my head around Metacello. But honestly I haven't dedicated as much time as it needs to be learnt. Having used VAST ENVY's ConfigurationMaps successfully in the past is a proof I can learn Metacello. During the last years at InfOil we were using git with Dolphin Smalltalk, with CI after every git push to the main repo. This was also linked with our issue tracking system, in order to know in which build a certain issue was fixed. We used Dolphin's PAX's files (CVS friendly), Gitlab, JetBrain's TeamCity and YouTrack I'd like to do the same using Monticello's FileTree, BitBucket and JIRA (CI server to be defined). Hopefully with some time, I'll be able to dive deeper into this. My learning of Pharo tooling hasn't been straightforward, but maybe because I'm old and spoiled with other Smalltalk dialects (VSE, VAST, Dolphin). I was managing the Android code (java) with git branching and merging way before I learnt how to use Monticello. Managing the code (files) was the only advantage of working with Eclipse/Java. Everything else was a burden compared with Pharo. I wanted to share my experiences through a blog, but haven't had time to set it up as I'd like, and by now this email is going to be all I can share. After the pilot, we can talk about reporting a success story for Pharo. I felt like this during the last week: http://devopsreactions.tumblr.com/post/68251866244/successful-deployment-at… Best regards, Esteban A. Maringolo CTO (aka DevOps), http://trentosur.com

Mongo lost references - bug?
by Sabine Knöfel Aug. 17, 2015

Aug. 17, 2015

Hi Esteban, I found a problem in mongo/voyage and I have reduced and extracted it for repro. I ask for your opinion if this is a bug. If you file in the code below, the method >>testDemo creates a simple model: Paper has 1:1 reference to Planet. Paper has 1:1 reference to Star. Star has 1:N reference to Planet. Star has 1:1 reference to Paper. Planet has 1:1 reference to Paper. If you run >>testDemo, you see that the model which was created is ok with all its references. (self assert: thePaper planet = thePaper star planets first.) ==> ok If you reset the repository and load Paper from database with Paper select all and make the same check, the references are lost. VORepository current reset. theReloadedPaper := Paper selectAll first. self assert: theReloadedPaper planet = theReloadedPaper star planets first ==>not ok But if you remove the comment within >>mongoPlanets which leads to sending a message to the newly loaded object, then it works. write: [ :star :planets | star planets: (planets "select: [:each | each someMethod]") ]); Do I have to send a message to each of the instances after loading? I think no. If I did not understand correctly how to use voyage, please tell me. New methods for the String class
by Daniela Meneses July 28, 2015

July 28, 2015

Hi to all, As you may know I'm working on in some improvements for the String class. Until now I implemented some missing tests. Right now I'm looking forward to add new methods that could be useful based on Ruby API ( http://www.ruby-doc.org/core-2.1.0/String.html) These are a few of the methods that I'm planning to implement: - chomp(separator=$/) -> new_str - chop() -> new_str - ljust(integer, padstr='') ->new_str - next -> new_str - partition(sep) -> [head, sep, tail] Could you help to find out if these methods are already available for the String class? If you have any idea of new methods for the string class, will be really welcome. -- Cheers , Daniela Meneses

Re: [Pharo-users] Slot questions
by Paul Davidowitz June 2, 2015

June 2, 2015

To Camillo Bruni: I'm not using any slot image (I only looked over the paper). According to the Pharo book, 'pvt' should be implemented in the mainstream image. To Marcus Denker: There are actually several methods in the image with the 'pvt' prefix. Please update the doc (Pharo book) to remove talking about 'pvt'. It would have saved me a little headache :)

Citizen example for manipulating a bibtex file
by Offray Vladimir Luna Cárdenas May 1, 2015

May 1, 2015

Hi, I'm using a Zotero collection for keeping track of several references I have found for my article about the experience of the outline/tree-like metaphor for writing inside Pharo (as soon as I have a presentable working draft I hope to share it with you). Now I want to make a post-processing of the bibtex file exported from Zotero. The idea is to use "shorttitle" field instead to replace the Zotero auto-generated one and have custom keys. So for example instead of: ======= @misc{_holistic_????, title = {Holistic software assessment (Uni Zurich - 2011) on Vimeo}, shorttitle = {Girba-holistic-2011}, url = {http://vimeo.com/42073344?from=outro-local}, urldate = {2014-08-19}, note = {00000} } ======= I would like to have: ======= @misc{Girba-holistic-2011, title = {Holistic software assessment (Uni Zurich - 2011) on Vimeo}, shorttitle = {Girba-holistic-2011}, url = {http://vimeo.com/42073344?from=outro-local}, urldate = {2014-08-19}, note = {00000} } ======= I have already installed Citizen and open it on the browser to see the code, but I can find any place to start with examples. Any advice on how to solve this issue will be appreciated. Cheers, Offray

Messaging solutions for Pharo
by Esteban A. Maringolo April 8, 2015

April 8, 2015

Hi, I'll be needing to add bidirectional messaging to our current Android (Java) application, and as usual I'm expecting to manage the server side of the communication with Pharo. I'm evaluating two alternatives, but I'm in open to other, proven, options. Option 1. WebSockets Open a WebSocket on each device, and push/retrieve messages from each of these, tracking the device id if I need to recreate a new socket (avoiding recreating new sockets in case of connectivity issues, very common). Option 2. MQTT [1] This is basically a mobile oriented MQ, super low footprint on mobile. For what I saw, I could implement the server using an intermediate MQ (RabbitMQ) and use STOMP to connect to it. Option 3. XMPP [3] Provides several features I'll need in the future, like file transfer in addition to regular text messaging. It is very well supported in Android with Smack [4], but I don't know if we have a Pharo server for it, or if somebody ever played with it. By means of simplicity and use load I favor option 1, because I can understand it better, and as everything moves towards web based technologies, I could implement WAMP [5] on top of that in the future. Right now I'd need to have a hundred websockets opened at the same time, which doesn't sound like a heavy load to me, but I certainly don't know. In the future it could be an order of magnitude bigger, and that's why I don't discard more complex solutions like XMPP or MQTT. Regards! Code formatting - preserving newlines and comments
by Peter Uhnák March 25, 2015

March 25, 2015

Is it possible to configure formatter to preserve empty lines and line comments? e.g. -------------- myMethod someCode. < empty line that I would like to preserve > moreCode. --------------- the formatter also automatically puts comments on the end of the previous statement. e.g. ------ someCode. "a comment" moreCode. ---- ends up as ---- someCode. "a comment" moreCode. ----- Both those behaviors seems odd to me. I've seen empty newlines and line comments in Pharo code... so either I missed some setting or people just don't use the formatter? Thanks, Peter

Aconcagua Documentation

Is there anything besides http://stephane.ducasse.free.fr/Teaching/CoursAnnecy/0506-M1-COO/aconcagua-… ? There are not many class comments and the tests were a bit overwhelming for me... Specifically I'm searching for anything built-in to present measures in the "most tidy" representation e.g. "125 dollars" instead of "12500 cents", "10 cups" instead of "480 teaspoons", etc. ----- Cheers, Sean -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Aconcagua-Documentation-tp4759781.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Changes file size
by Esteban A. Maringolo Feb. 13, 2015

Feb. 13, 2015

I know we're on our way to get rid of changes, but meanwhile after installing my Metacello config I end up with an image of 40megs and a changes file of 140 megs!!! It doesn't load anything too esoteric: Glorp, Magritte, Seaside, Postgres, NeoCSV and my own packages. I can run PharoChangesCondenser condense, but it takes forever! (I started it 20 minutes ago and it's still running). Is there a way I can improve this situation? Esteban A. Maringolo

Installing GToolkit
by Evan Donahue Feb. 3, 2015

Feb. 3, 2015

Hello, I am trying to check out GTPlaygroundl, but I can't seem to get it working and was wondering if anyone had any idea what I might be overlooking. I download a new image with curl get.pharo.org | bash I run, from http://www.humane-assessment.com/blog/installing-gtoolkit Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'Moose' project: 'GToolkit'; configuration; loadDevelopment. #GTImageSetupCommandLineHandler asClass new activate It loads for a while and then the image closes. When I open it again the background is white and my settings have been wiped. The playground does appear, but it doesn't seem to work properly (there seems to be no way to advance the miller columns). Am I looking at the wrong installation information? Thanks, Evan

How do I save contents of Workspace into a collection?
by Frank Church Jan. 31, 2015

Jan. 31, 2015

Hi guys, My images are gathering a number of Workspaces whose contents I don't want to delete. I want to create a collection of Workspace contents along this defintion: Description Date Category Content (the actual text in the Workspace). In the final version I would like to be able to select a workspace and simply click a button or a menu item and get a dialog where I can enter the Description, Category and Date with the Workspace contents automatically captured into a text box. Copying and pasting the contents would be okay to start with. Filing it out would be another aspect later. What kind of array would best suited to the task? There is quite a number of them depicted here: http://www.jmcsweeney.co.uk/computing/m206/collections_intro.php What could be the best way to go about it? For those who are curious I am experimenting with the original ideas of Smalltalk where a computer user would do everything in Smalltalk workspace/desktop. I am intrigued by the possibility and somehow it seems eminently doable. -- Frank Church ======================= http://devblog.brahmancreations.com

[ANN] Spec documentation in PFTE book finished
by Johan Fabry Jan. 2, 2015

Jan. 2, 2015

Hi all, I am happy to announce that Ben and I finished the documentation of Spec for the Pharo For The Enterprise book. This documentation is up-to-date with the latest version of Spec, and is focused towards people wanting to use it and even extend it (in contrast to the academic papers which are ⦠academic ;-) ). I hope that this text will help all the people that are building UIs in Pharo, and it will clear up any doubts that they may have. The chapter is available in source form from the GitHub project of the PFTE book: https://github.com/SquareBracketAssociates/PharoForTheEnterprise-english The easiest way to read the chapter is from the continuous integration server, which produces a html file of the chapter here: https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/PharoForTheEnterprise/lastSucces… (The same server also produces pdf and markdown files, but there are some strange artifacts there, currently. I guess this will be cleared up in the future) We tried our best to make it understandable and complete, but if you have any doubts or comments please do not hesitate to let us know !! Ben prefers Github apparently, but if you are oldskool like me you can also send a mail (privately or to the mailing list). Now it's time to build some cool user interfaces! :-) ---> Save our in-boxes! http://emailcharter.org <--- Johan Fabry - http://pleiad.cl/~jfabry PLEIAD lab - Computer Science Department (DCC) - University of Chile

MVC/ MVP / DCI Patterns..
by S Krish Nov. 29, 2014

Nov. 29, 2014

In the context of spec / UI / enterprise solutions, I have been mulling over this for some time especially when I play with FXML. To put it in context, I find FXML intriguing and nice. XML metadata that stays completely outside the code and makes it uber flexible to weave in UI to a enterprise solution post facto. The thought trail I have is: Typical Pattern: Model links to Controller that links to a: Customer View ( singleton ? ) Controller links to: Validators / Delegates.. et als.. Model links to in Memory Cache registry { that links to: Persistence Module.. I do not bother about this for now..} In FXML I see nice convention over configuration approach: * XML format.. understood by people/ more importantly editors at large.. * Controller is injectable * all method calls onAction/ events are simple viz #handleSubmitButtonAction or the ilk.. that will thereby call the controller instance methods.. * fxml can also invoke simple ( or complex) javascript action viz: jsSubmitAction( event) Would Spec see that kind of approach.. feasible for extensibility Food for thought more as rethink on fundamental patterns: a) Should view have knowledge explicitly of its Controller.. Or Controller while creating the view injects its instance.. only.. b) Should we push Controller to be a Presenter.. as the case tends to be. And then let Controller be the gateway to all other parts.. as listed above.. c) View actions & callbacks & validators are separated and dealt with a view "controller" , but the gateway to all other parts is handled by a real "observer controller" ... There has to be reliable: * bidirectional update from view -> model ( in cache ) * proper modular segregation of all parts of a standard enterprise app. to enable common and known functions of each part, flexible, scalable but importantly easily maintainable.. in future by developer other than the author.. * Scriptability is one of the desired capabilities with the shrink wrapped app to be extended

ViDI Error: glx not supported
by Rafael Luque Nov. 27, 2014

Nov. 27, 2014

Hi, I installed ViDI on Pharo 4 following the project instructions detailed in its GitHub page: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'YuriyTymchuk' project: 'Configuration'; configurationOf: 'Vidi'; load. #ConfigurationOfVidi asClass loadStable When I launch the ViDI option I get the error: "Error: glx not supported". I'm using Gentoo Linux with NVidia Optimus graphic card, so I use bumblebee to switch to NVidia and launched pharo using optirun command like this: $ optirun pharo-ui my-image I get glxspheres64 running successfully using the same procedure. How can I activate GLX support inside the Pharo image? I noted the option System > Settings > FFI > "Path to OpenGL library (on linux)" however I don't see (or I don't know) how to set this value. Thank you.

Beginner of smalltalk 80 - first graphic windows and GUI -2
by Hans Schueren Nov. 26, 2014

Hello , here is Hans , The Byte Surfer , the smalltalk code is from books of year 1992 and 1993 1988 and 1987. I have a lot of books around the world . ALL of the Topic SMALLTALK 80. Only 80 !!! Because i am a absolute beginner and want to learn smalltalk 80. I realized that thing have changed. for example GUI programming Mosttimes there is a optional library needed for creation. There is a optional IDE i know , for those things. No Matter ! I dont know anything about the NEW TOOLS and Replacements in actual Smalltalk Engineering like PHARO. Please tell me what i have to learn. What is GUI IDE in Pharo. Do i have to learn Morpic. What else for Window and Buttons design ? The Pharo ( and actual squeak ) have very much weight for a beginner. Is it right , that all " NEW STUFF " is decribed in the two manuals : Pharo by Example + Deep into Pharo. Or is there any other actual description about "Up to date programming Pharo" ???? Sincerely Your Friend Hans The Byte Surfer PS. Wish to have Smalltalk 80 from XEROX 1987 here. ha ha ha On 26.11.2014 18:00, pharo-users-request(a)lists.pharo.org wrote: > Send Pharo-users mailing list submissions to > pharo-users(a)lists.pharo.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists.pharo.org/mailman/listinfo/pharo-users_lists.pharo.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > pharo-users-request(a)lists.pharo.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > pharo-users-owner(a)lists.pharo.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Pharo-users digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hello, When i try to add a vertical/horizontal layout to a RTMultiCompositeShape that has a Bitmap shape, it cant render the layout because a RTBitmal dont understand #extent. For example: | element label bitmap composite view | label := RTLabel new text: 'hello'. bitmap := RTBitmap new form: (Form dotOfSize: 10). composite := (RTMultiCompositeShape with: label with: bitmap) vertical. element := RTElement new addShape: composite. view := RTView new add: element; open Thanks!
