Three copies of JSON-ul.35 on Smalltalkhub
by Paul DeBruicker Oct. 27, 2013

Oct. 27, 2013

There are (at least) three locations of the JSON-ul.35 package on Smalltalkhub. Here: http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~NicolasPetton/JSON/ here: http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~PharoExtras/JSON/ and here: http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~pdebruic/JSONg I've also unknowingly duplicated Stef's efforts at making a ConfigurationOfJSON again here: http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~pdebruic/JSONg (but this version includes the JSON port to Gemstone) Which of the above should we treat as the canonical JSON repository? Thanks Paul

Hi Norbert, I don't think it is RFB's fault either. I did give the complete steps I did. Perhaps just a wait loop after each of the steps is all it takes, 'cos since I did those steps using the local vm by hand before the "save and quit". I know how to wait for RFBServer to start (1), but I'm not sure how to wait for the load to finish or whether I need to. Anyway, I'm happy now since RFB is running fine with the manually created image. Thanks! ... and all this is pretty cool! -Kumar (1) [RFBServer current isRunning] whileFalse: [1 second asDelay wait] On 25 Oct, 2013, at 7:51 PM, pharo-users-request(a)lists.pharo.org wrote: > Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2013 16:21:49 +0200 > From: Norbert Hartl <norbert(a)hartl.name> > To: Pharo users users <pharo-users(a)lists.pharo.org> > Subject: Re: [Pharo-users] Pharo 2.0 with RFBServer with -headless > Message-ID: <CCECFED4-ED69-4802-A23D-70DECA2B81A5(a)hartl.name> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 > > Hi Srikumar, > > can you tell what other software you have installed in your image. Hi Ben, Thanks for the welcome :) My problem doesn't seem to be related to the semaphore issue and more likely reflects my noob status. I'm up and running now though. I was afraid of having to run xpra or something since it would eat server memory, but thankfully RFBServer seems to work fine now. Pharo 2.0 with RFBServer with -headless
by Srikumar Karaikudi Subramanian Oct. 25, 2013

Oct. 25, 2013

Hi, Since this is my first post, I'd first like to say Pharo rocks! After quite a bit of search for a server-side programming environment that I can live with, I landed on Pharo/Zinc+family and went "this is it!" for my project which is like a wiki for music notation. I'm trying to setup a pharo+zinc server with RFB installed on a VPS so I can access it through VNC ("Chicken of the VNC" on MacOS 10.8.5). I'm only get a static image of the pharo environment when I connect and I don't get any interactivity at all. One other poster [1] who mentioned this also posted that the problem was solved with a later version of squeak, which I didn't have any luck with since I don't have X configured on my server. Much appreciate any tips. I got pharo from get.pharo.org and cloned the image using "save". I run the following script on the cloned image with the "-headless" flag (I tried with and without the flag.) "----begin code---" Gofer it squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfRFB'; load. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfRFB) load. (RFBServer current) allowEmptyPasswords: false; allowRemoteConnections: false; allowInteractiveConnections: true; allowZRLE: true; setFullPassword: 'my password'; start: 0. [1 hour asDelay wait] repeat. "----end code----" One other point - if I save an image after loading the RFB package (using "Smalltalk snapshot: true andQuit: true.") and then launch with a script that only starts the server, I get a static black screen instead and not even the static image. So I don't understand why there should be a behaviour difference between the two as well. Regards to all, -Kumar [1] http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/squeak/conversations/topics/141662

Proper way of handling multiple exception sections
by Norbert Hartl Oct. 25, 2013

Oct. 25, 2013

Iâm thinking about what would be the proper/least annoying way of having multiple exception sections. If I have a code block that can emit two different exceptions is the only way doing it [ [ ... ] on: Exception1 do: [ ⦠] ] on: Exception2 do: [ ⦠] on:do: just calls a primitive that marks the context being an exception handler. What is called in the image when the stack is scanned to find an exception handler? thanks, Norbert

Spec Question
by Manfred Kröhnert Oct. 25, 2013

Oct. 25, 2013

Hi everyone, I finally got around to check back on a Spec question that popped up about two weeks ago. At that time I was giving Spec a first try and gathered information from a couple of sources. One of them was the draft chapter about Spec from the Pharo for the Enterprise book. https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/PharoForTheEnterprise/ws/Spec/Sp… The example has the following method: TestSpec>>initializePresenter example whenTextIsAccepted: [ changes text: 'The text Changed'. acceptChanges enable ]. This should change the text of the 'changes' LabelModel when the text in the 'example' TextModel is accepted. Now, there the issue for me was that the Label text did not change once when I typed text into the presented textfield. Even when I changed the method from 'whenTextIsAccepted:' to 'whenTextChanged:'. Is this intended or is this an issue with Spec? Also, it is not clear to me what 'accepting' text means (maybe I didn't look thoroughly enough). The method comment just states that it is called when the text is accepted. Which is kind of self referential ;-) The OS X Pharo versions I used for testing where newly downloaded Pharo 2.0 and 3.0 from about 2 weeks ago. They were downloaded from here: http://files.pharo.org/platform/Pharo2.0-mac.zip http://files.pharo.org/platform/Pharo3.0-mac.zip Best, Manfred

Tip: Recovering a broken image
by Bernat Romagosa Oct. 24, 2013

Oct. 24, 2013

Hi list, I've just recovered a broken image that crashed upon startup. There was some problem with a SerialPort that stayed open and tried to write/read into a physical port that didn't exist no more, or something of the sort. So here's the magic line: $ bin/myVm shared/MyImage.image eval "SmalltalkImage backupTo: 'recover'" This makes a copy of the image into a new image called "recover.image", but as the documentation states: *Unlike #saveAs: do not transfer the default execution to the new image. * So there you go! Hope it helps someone else. :) -- Bernat Romagosa.

Zinc: How to use the @ character in an URL
by Olivier Auverlot Oct. 24, 2013

Oct. 24, 2013

Hi, I work actually on a framework to manage a Proxmox server. The Proxmox solution is based on a strange REST API⦠:-( To get informations about an user, I must send a string with the login and the authentication domain. The two values are separated by a character @. For example: GET /api2/extjs/access/users/auverlot@LIFL My first problem with Zinc is that the client find the character @ and the client think that this is an URL with authentication. I tried to use an encoding string with %40 but Proxmox don't find the user. The solution must be to modify the method ZnUrl>>#parseAuthority:from:to: to do a better detection of authentication pattern: parseAuthority: string from: start to: stop | index | index := string indexOf: $@ startingAt: start. (index > 0 and: [ (string indexOf: $: startingAt: start) < index and: [ index < (string indexOf: $/ startingAt: start) ] ]) ifTrue: [ self parseUserInfo: (ReadStream on: string from: start to: index - 1). self parseHostPort: (ReadStream on: string from: index 1 to: stop ) ] ifFalse: [ self parseHostPort: (ReadStream on: string from: start to: stop ) ] But, it's not the end of the road :-( Because in the next steps, Zinc encodes the character @ in the url. How to disabled the automatic encoding and using special characters in the url ? Thanks for your help. Best regards Olivier ;-)

But when I set the content to an html string. The text shows up as html (<html><body>Dear</body></html>), encoding and all but not html formatted. Ca you tell me what I'm doing wrong. Here is the code: > mailMessage := MailMessage empty. > mailMessage setField: 'subject' toString: 'Some subject'. > mailMessage body: (MIMEDocument contentType: 'text/html' content: '<html><body>Dear</body></html>' ). I just wrote the ZdcSecureSMTPClient subclass, I am not familiar with the finer points of MailMessage. I am guessing that for HTML content you have to work with MIME parts. How do I get UIPainter to work on Pharo 3.0?
by Buddha Buck Oct. 22, 2013

Oct. 22, 2013

I am trying to learn Spec (which seems to be a moving target), and I don't know how all the various widgets and tools are supposed to work. Given that there is a Spec-based UIPainter project as part of this years Google Summer of Code (recently completed), I thought it would be a good idea to check that out. At the very least, I could poke around at the generated code and get a handle on how it works. Trying to load UIPainter (as per the instructions on http://uipainter-gsoc.over-blog.com/how-to-install-it) into Pharo 2.0 yielded errors about UIPainter being dependent on certain Spec classes which weren't available in Spec on Pharo 2.0. The instructions do say Pharo 3.0, so I downloaded the latest image (as of a few days ago), and tried again. The same errors came up. A search of the changelogs makes me thing that Pharo 30448 is the change that likely broke this, as it's titled "Remove Morphic Dependency from Spec" and removes a lot of Spec-Widget stuff. This change was also made after the "how to install" page was written. So how should I proceed? Should I grab image 30447 and work form that? Should I wait for Spec to stabilize and get documented? I'm a newbie to Smalltalk and to Pharo, so I don't know the customs yet.

Comanche now loads in Pharo 2.0
by Hernán Morales Durand Oct. 22, 2013

Oct. 22, 2013

I have updated Comanche to load in Pharo 2.0 from SmalltalkHub. Install it from the ConfigurationBrowser -> KomHttpServer I grant access to the repository to anyone which require access (just reply this mail). I have fixed several classes like ModAuth, ModAutoIndex and ModDir and now examples in class comments work. There are some issues to review yet, for example fixing the DirectoryEntry printString in http://localhost:8080/ after evaluating | ma | ma := ModuleAssembly core. ma documentRoot: FileSystem disk workingDirectory fullName. ma directoryIndex: 'index.html index.htm'. ma serveFiles. (HttpService startOn: 8080 named: 'Example') plug: ma rootModule But this is a start and could be useful because many projects have dependencies with Comanche and now can be loaded in Pharo >= 2.0 Cheers, Hernán

Monticello and HTTPS
by Manfred Kröhnert Oct. 20, 2013

Hi everyone, I am one of the guys helping Nico with Amber. Now, I recently started to experiment with Pharo for a small project. After some reading and experimenting I was able to get something running thanks to the good documentation available. While I was on the go I tried to save my code with Monticello on a private WebDAV share. However, the server is only accessible via HTTPS which resulted in an error accessing it from the Monticello browser. Now my question is if HTTPS is supported by Montichello or not. Since the server is accessed with username/password I'd rather not use plain HTTP. Best, Manfred

From reading the Zinc docs here: http://zn.stfx.eu/zn/zinc-http-components-paper.html I can see that ZnClient supports the 'Keep Alive' header. Does ZnManagingMultiThreadedServer? Seems like it does from the code, assuming the presence of the 'Keep-Alive' header from the client and a HTTP v 1.1 connection, but I'm not sure. If so, is there a way to configure the timeout or max # of connections? I just want to make sure the settings in my nginx proxy match up with Zinc Thanks Paul

Spec Lists - setting the selection
by btc＠openinworld.com Oct. 18, 2013

Oct. 18, 2013

I found it hard to find documentation on Spec beyond [1],[2],[3], some of which seem to have changed some syntax since they were written. I've been piecing things together to work out how to set the selected item with the simplest example I could. Even though it turns out pretty simple, I thought I'd share in case it was useful for others that haven't dipped their toes into Spec yet. ComposableModel subclass: #TestSpec instanceVariableNames: 'list text' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'BTCPlay' TestSpec >> initializeWidgets self instantiateModels: #( #list #ListModel ). TestSpec >> getList ^list TestSpec class >> mySpecLayout <spec:#default> ^ SpecLayout composed add:#getList ; yourself. Then from Workspace x := (TestSpec new openWithSpec ; yourself). x getList items: { 1 . 2 . 3 . 4}. x getList setSelectedItem: 2. cheers -ben [1] hal.inria.fr/hal-00759030/PDF/Spec-IWST12-Final.pdfâ [2] https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/PharoForTheEnterprise/lastSucces… [3] http://hal.inria.fr/docs/00/70/80/67/PDF/SpecTechReport.pdf
