funny idea Symbol vs. Selector
by stephane ducasse May 14, 2015

Hi guys I'm thinking aloud... I was wondering if we could not take advantage of a new class: Selector. MethodDict would only contain selectors and not symbols. I remember that I talked about that with hernan. Stef

Package browser?
by Rob Vens June 28, 2013

June 28, 2013

I am attempting to do the Pharo by Example book, but a package browser (which is used in the examples) is not in the 1.1.1 or 1.2 image. Should I still use categories? If I create a package in Monticello browser I am not able to add classes or anything (not as far as I could see). Just starting out using Pharo, so apologies if these questions are already answered elsewhere.

Hi list, Is there an Actors library already available in Pharo? The part I'm interested in is the asynchronous message passing. If it has been done already, why not reuse? Thanks in advance!

SandstoneDB and a dictionary
by David Zmick June 30, 2011

June 30, 2011

Saving a dictionary that has references to other objects as keys results in data loss in the dictionary. I have created a simplified example to explain my problem: SDActiveRecord subclass: #Test instanceVariableNames: 'as bs' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'Sandbox' Test>>initialize super initialize. self as1: OrderedCollection new. self bs: OrderedCollection new. self as add: (A new title: 1). self as add: (A new title: 2). self as add: (A new title: 3). self bs add: (B new title: 1). self bs add: (B new title: 2). self bs add: (B new title: 3). self as do: [:a | self bs do: [:b | a dict at: b put: 1]]. Object subclass: #A instanceVariableNames: 'title dict' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'Sandbox' A>>initialize self dict: Dictionary new. Object subclass: #B instanceVariableNames: 'title' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'Sandbox' Evaluating Test new and inspecting the result behaves as expected, but after evaluating Test new save, verifying the Test findAll has the expected values (which it does) and closing the image without saving, opening the image and attempting to reload the objects results in each instance of A's dictionary looking like this. dict: a Dictionary(nil->1) it should have said this(and did before closing and opening the image again): dict: a Dictionary(a B->1 a B->1 a B->1) Hopefully I have explained this problem somewhat well, it is difficult for me to find any other way to explain what I am experiencing. Should I not be using the B objects as dictionary keys? Am I using the wrong dictionary? I am lost. Thanks for any help. -- David Zmick dpzmick(a)gmail.com

printOn: vs printString
by Alan Rodas June 25, 2011

June 25, 2011

Hello folks I was wondering why does Smalltlak prefer the printOn: aStream method over the printString method. As I work with Java and C# all the time, I'm used to define a printString like method where you return a string representing the object, and, today, having to do the same in smalltlak I unconsciously redefined the printString method. As soon as I realize that my collections were using printOn: instead of my redefined printSrting method for printing their contents, I wondered: Why was this decision taken? I mean, every other language seems more simple (from the end user point of view, as it does not require the user to understand streams at all), In the other hand, printOn: seems more versatile. Pointless question, I know, but I'm quite curious and I cannot seem to find anything about this, and I though that you guys may know. Cheers -- Alan Rodas Bonjour

Parsing XML into sorted elements
by Sean P. DeNigris June 23, 2011

June 23, 2011

I want to sort nodes of a certain parent node as they are parsed by XMLDOMParser. The following is what I tried so far. It causes the image to hang and CPU to sweat. I've put half a day in - before I continue, what's the best way to do this? Am I on the right path? It seems very complicated ( I almost feel like I'm working with Morphic ;-) ) The parent node is XMLPageElement which is a subclass of XMLElement, in which I overrode #nodesClass to return XMLSortedList. XMLSortedList is a subclass of XMLNodeList with the following overrides: initialize self nodes sortBlock: self sortBlock. sortBlock ^ [ :a :b | a < b ]. species ^ super XMLSortedList. There is also XMLSortedList class>>collectionClass ^ SortedCollection. The above overrides XMLOrderedList's use of OrderedCollection. I refactored XMLOrderedList by pulling all references to OrderedCollection into this method. Thanks. Re: [Pharo-users] [COTDC] 68#2 MultiTextComposer
by Alain Plantec June 23, 2011

June 23, 2011

For TextComposer first ---------------------- Class intention I compose a collection of lines to fit the size of a physical container (especially according to the paragraph contrainer height, width and position). The result of my computation is a collection of TextLine that is ready to be managed by a paragraph to be drawn on a canvas in a particular screen area. Class collaborations I collaborate with a CompositionScanners for character measurement and with a TextContainer which holds the text to be composed Class main API #composeLinesFrom: argStart to: argStop delta: argDelta into: argLinesCollection priorLines: argPriorLines atY: argStartY textStyle: argTextStyle text: argText container: argContainer wantsColumnBreaks: argWantsColumnBreaks It is my main public method which returns the collection of TextLines (as the first element of an array) ---------------------- and then for MultiTextComposer ---------------------- See TextComposer comments first. I'm a specialization for the management of complex text (internationalized text). TextComposer and MultiTextComposer shoukl be merged in a near futur ----------------------
