I run Pharo on Linux and tried to start Pharo with the PBE.image, that is offered as an add on to the Pharo by example book. I copied PBE.image and PBE.change to Pharo-1.2.1-OneClick.app/Contents/Resources/ (where pharo.image and pharo.change reside as well) and changed the last line in pharo.sh from "$ROOT/Contents/Resources/pharo.image" to "$ROOT/Contents/Resources/PBE.image" When I start the shell-script nothing happens. What is wrong with my experiment. With pharo.image pharo starts properly. I tried to change the setting in pharo.ini from pharo.image to PBE.image as well. No success! What is wrong? Problem with FS Git

I'm playing with FS-Git, see how we can use it to browse/extract information from a Git repository. Difficult to get started without a bit of information, but after a while it's ok I have one minor remark and a potential bug: 1) it would be cool to have the timestamp of the commit 2) when trying to recursively browse parents the commit tree, I stumble upon a DNU in GitPackedObject>>unpackRefDeltaContent unpackRefDeltaContent | s delta base | s := (GitObjectSignature loadFrom: file) resolve. "---> (GitObjectSignature loadFrom: file) returns an Integer, which can't answer to #resolve " delta := self readDelta. base := pack packedObjectAt: s. self applyDelta: delta to: base. Is this a known bug? I just tried this morning with the latest version of Camillo as well as with the previous version. -- Simon Denier

Hi, I am happy to announce the new home for humane assessment: http://humane-assessment.com Humane assessment is a new software engineering method for making the assessment of software systems practical and manageable. This is made possible by the Moose analysis platform. The core idea is quite simple: build custom analysis tools to analyze the contextual complexity of your software systems so that you can make better decisions. By decisions I mean anything that has to do with the system: it can be technical (such as, is this concept well encapsulated?, or is my component used the right way?), or it can be broad and strategic (such as, should I refactor my system?). To make it practical we need to be able to craft tools (sometimes complex tools) fast. This is made feasible by Moose, and in turn, Moose achieves this because of Smalltalk. The method also covers process and organization-related problems. If you wish, humane assessment is the coat that can place Moose and Smalltalk within any development team. Every time I look at smalltalk, I'm blown away with how cool it is to work with and each time I try to get started, my efforts are stymied pretty quickly. I understand message passing, and I understand the basics of the syntax, but I'm having a very hard time understanding how to use the class libraries. I am trying to build a very small app. A simple data editor and browser. I've been able to follow an example in the code (simple grid example). I can now display my objects in a window, with four of the attributes listed in the editor. Now I can select an time and change it in place in the list editor but that change doesn't make it into the "database" (my ordered collection). It is not clear to me at all how to select a line in a MorphTreeMorph. Nor how to save the change when the user tabs out or hits return. Any help would be appreciated. Tony

Hi guys I was thinking after the discussions I got with igor about the efforts we spend on the build servers and vm infrastructure: sometimes we/you have a vision and a good one but people do not get it or do not follow or are busy and do not get that if they would spend 5% of time doing little things then you would not lose your faith or days of work. Yes this is like that: for example igor fixes are not included in VM code. This happens. So may be one of these days we will have to think about what we really want for VMs and do it. Now you should not let people get your vision down. This is too important and fun when your vision is cool.
