Package browser?

I am attempting to do the Pharo by Example book, but a package browser (which is used in the examples) is not in the 1.1.1 or 1.2 image. Should I still use categories? If I create a package in Monticello browser I am not able to add classes or anything (not as far as I could see). Just starting out using Pharo, so apologies if these questions are already answered elsewhere.

GlorpDBX

Hi, feeling particularly stupid right now. Been trying to get Glorp DBX working with Postgresql for the last 2 hours and I'm busted. It took me about an out just to find out how to load and configure things. ugh. It took me a while to work out I had to actually install OpenDBX (doh). So I have downloaded that and added the directory to my PATH. So I'm trying to run the tests and I get DBXFatalError: FATAL OpenDBX: Loading backend library failed. I know it's finding OpenDBX, because when I move the OpenDBX folder, I get a different error - "Error: External Module Not Found" from apiInitialize (and I can see it's trying to load libopendbx-1.dll). Part of my problem is squeakdbx.org domain expired on 09/27/11 and is now a godaddy parking page. double ugh. Anyone got any ideas? I'm running a fresh 1.3 using CogVM-Win-13307 install on Windows XP. Jonathan.

Note this is typically the way we want to work with the consortium in the future: Build an initial roadmap and refine it based on the input of the community. - A website for the consortium registration (esteban is expert on that). - This is important for INRIA and for the visibility of the consortium. We should get new members :) - Integration with SmalltalkHub - Working on fixing bugs! - Debugger fixes - Continuous bug fixing. - Improving release process: faster, more people involved, simpler. - Working on metacello repositories for each distributions (everything is there but missing last bits) - Metacello tools - Automatic release validations - Automatic validation of fixes Now the free items with probably igor involvement - Multiwindowing support - Fully working multithreaded FFI with ***Documentation*** - Filesystem fix and integration - Integration of OPAL - RPackage integration Igor related - Ephemerons - Object format - VM branding - Use of new canvas - Event cleaning So we are waiting for your suggestions. [pharo-users] Can't Load Magma in Pharo 1.3

Hi, I'm new to Pharo and Smalltalk in general. I'm trying to build a small blogging application using Pharo and Seaside. I've decided to use Magma for persistence, but I'm having some issues loading it in Pharo 1.3. I loaded Magma the usual way: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfMagma'; load. (Smalltalk at:#ConfigurationOfMagma) project latestVersion load: 'Server'; load: 'Client'. ... and I was presented with a backtrace. Since didn't know how to get a full backtrace out of Pharo in plain text, I took a screenshot: http://imagebin.org/180559 I know this is not adequate, but I'm hoping someone can help me get Pharo to give me information about this issue in a more convenient format. When I told Pharo to abandon loading the package and then re-evaluated this: (Smalltalk at:#ConfigurationOfMagma) project latestVersion load: 'Server'; load: 'Client'. ... then everything went just fine. I even tried creating a Magma repository, which worked. However, some things were totally borked in my Pharo image. I couldn't get the System Browser to do syntax highlighting, for one. Pharo Consortium is moving forward.

Hi guys Since INRIA accepted to pay one engineer around the pharo consortium we will hire Esteban Lorenzano for a year. We are excited by that! I should do a lot of paper work but this is really cool. For the consortium we are working on it :) - Inria law oriented people are designing a "CAML" like consortium text. http://caml.inria.fr/consortium/ but simpler :). For pharo there will be no specific license just plain MIT. - Marcus is setting up a mailing-list and we will make public the names of the companies that are participating (if they agree). Note that several companies developing in VisualAge (Instantiations, HRWorks..) or Gemstone mentioned their intentions to join the consortium and we welcome them. - We will discuss the prices and modality but the goal is that any individual can be a consortium member and that we can pay one or two engineers to support Pharo development and bring more people into Smalltalk. Breakthorugh Porting to Latest Pharo

With Ramon Leon's simple image-based persistence, I now have one script that moves all my code /and data/ into a new image. Also, Pharo 1.3 with Cog Jit VM seems really fast at loading code. I've kept a complete copy of this 1.3 install directory if anyone wants to dig into this crash. I'm pretty sure this was from the single click distribution. Jonathan.

Hi. I was thinking about this thread. The described solution works pretty well, but something you should be aware (I think) is that even if it doesn't fail, the generated results could be different than the expected. What I mean is that if you want to load something which at a certain point you do not make explicit WHICH version of a package to load (say you are using #bleedingEdge, or #latestVerison, or you let some defaults for project references or empty version, etc), then Metacello may find a different version in the local directory than the one that exist in the "real/online" repository. To conclude...the resulting image will be always the same only if all versions of all packages are explicitly defined. I am right? Oneiric gone bad

Just updated Ubuntu and now Pharo doesn't run. I have been working ok under Oneiric but then after getting the latest update Pharo no longer runs. If I drop into the terminal and try to fire up the VM I get the following: jeff@Roger:/usr/local/lib/cogvm$ ./squeakvm could not find display driver vm-display-X11; either: - check that /usr/local/lib/cogvm//vm-display-X11.so exists, or - use the '-plugins <path>' option to tell me where it is, or - remove DISPLAY from your environment. Hi, I thought I'd ask here first ... I got my BTree code working, so I thought I'd try to use it with the Goods DB, but it seems it's only storing and recovering the instance variables. My page class is OrderedCollection variableSubclass: #BTreePageOuter instanceVariableNames: 'order count' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'BTree' db := KKDatabase onHost: 'localhost' port: 6543. db root: (BTree withOrder: 2). db root add: 'O1'. db commit. db logout. When I reconnect, instance variables order and count are set, but array (from the parent OrderedCollection) is nil. Jonathan. PS... squeaksource was down, so I downloaded the packages from the spanish mirror into my local package cache, and loaded them from there. I'm running 1.3 on COG (that came from the 1.2.1 single click). Package versions are: GOODS-cds.137.mcz GOODSCollections-cds.1.mcz GOODSPlatformSqueak-cds.6.mcz

Hosted GLASS made easy?

Hi, I've been watching a thread on the Seaside mailing list about hosting GLASS on Amazon's EC2. It hit 60 messages (try this, doesn't work, try that...). I'm no sys admin, so I'd like to find cloud hosting for pharo and Gemstone that is easier to manage. I got Gemstone & Pharo running on my mac in just a few hours, but i'm sure that's a lot easier than a manual install on someone else's remote linux box with Apache etc. Is there a reliable cloud hosting environment where the GLASS virtual appliance might 'just work' out of the box? thanks. How to get temp names of BlockClosure

I'm trying to learn how to get temp names from a BlockClosure. Well, I try to be able to treat BlockClosures the same way than CompileMethod when it comes to arguments. I can do [:a :b :c| ] asContext tempNames #('a' 'b' 'c') but I'm not sure if this is the best to go. While looking I found [:a :b :c| ] method tempNames #('[a' 'b' 'c]') For me there are two errors. The obvious one is that the first element is [a instead of a (it splits the string "[a b c]" by spaces). The second point is that "method" is defined as "outerContext method" and I don't understand why it is visible as temps there. It gets the information from the method trailer. I frequently want to communicate with a running image and REST seems a little easier than XMLRPC which I've been using. I created the CenteredIntervalTree repo on Squeaksource. The CenteredIntervalTree is about 2x slower to create than a DateTree but 50-500x faster to query in Pharo 1.3 on Linux. The speed difference remains relatively constant as the tree size grows. I only tested up to 1,000,000 timespans. It works with instances of class Interval and Timespan. Converting the Timespans to Intervals using #asSeconds makes the creation process faster than the DateTree creation process. I used the code below to approximate the speed differences. You need to have the BTree package loaded from SqueakSource to try the example below. OpenDBX SQLite: - 6 failures related to large objects, which are not supported by opendbx (again again).. 2 (expected) failures related to times & dates. Hello everybody We got a final discussion with INRIA representatives and we will now set up a consortium for pharo. INRIA will support the consortium by funding on advanced engineer for a year (may be two if the consortium work well). So this is quite good around 55Keuros on consortium. There some strings attached: We will not be able to pay remote development since this is regulated under the public market french laws but we will be able to hire people (on french rate if they work in France). We will have to see the legal period to spent the money. The general idea is to see how the consortium evolves: ideally we would like to see if we can get it outside inria within a five years period. Now what we plan to do: - We would like to make the list of companies that sign the agreement letter public. Because this is important that other companies joins the consortium. - We will offer a free participation to any individual. - We are wondering if we could have a academic fee for the institution that want it: we have to discuss the fee. Any suggestions would be good: I was thinking that 500 Euros would be good for rich countries and 200 for the other ones. Now tell us. - We could also have way to pay a license or a way to give money to the consortium. Now the complex part: - we would like to collect money from companies and again we will need your help to understand what is the correct model. We are thinking: single person company: starting at 300 Euros "small company": starting at 2500 Euros large companies: starting at 5000 Euros. We would like to keep the model really simple and transparent. Now our goal is to be able to pay an engineer like igor full time because there is so much to do. Hi - I am considering implementing a Centered Interval Tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interval_tree) because I have to get the set of Timespans a particular Timespan overlaps from an arbitrary set of Timespans. In looking around I can only find the BTree implementation on SqueakSource, and the Left-Leaning-Red-Black-Tree linked to in the following list posting: http://forum.world.st/Interesting-survey-about-smalltalk-tp2261561p2263370.… Does Pharo either not need/benefit from the various kinds of trees? Or is it trivial to implement/adapt the BTree to behave as a Red-Black Tree (or, in my case, the Centered Interval Tree) and as such I just need to learn how to do that? Thanks Paul

Loading Seaside 3.0 cripples System browser

I downloaded the Pharo 1.3 one click. I then attempted to load Seaside using the following mechanism: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfSeaside30'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) project latestVersion) load. It complained twice about some package dependencies i.e. related to RBxxx packages. I proceeded through both and it seemingly terminated fine. Seaside was loaded including the Seaside control panel. However, doing a right mouse over the leftmost panel (Categories) resulted in an MNU. Also stuff like syntax highlighting became inactive. sorry for the newbie question but I pop myself in here once in a while. Just downloaded Pharo 1.3 but decided to not use the one click since I wanted to use the Cog VM. After loading Seaside from Squeak Source , which gave me a couple pre-req missing warnings which I proceeded thru (not of relevance), I began browsing around and noticed that the syntax highlighter was not loaded or active. Create object model from AST using visitor

Hi, I'm writing a parser at the moment. The first step I did using petit parser to get from the grammar to my own AST like structure. Now I like to create my working model from the AST. And I'm thinking what would be the best way to do. If I want to create a model from the structure it turns out to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I'm using a visitor for this. In a typical visitor every element is treated in isolation. I can treat subelement B in the visitor but I cannot assign it to its parent A because there is no link. And I'm not really convinced that introducing return values in the visitor is the right way to go. What I need to do is a visitor that transforms one thing into another thing with having the need that existing parent-child relationships need to be preserved through the transformation. Anyone has an idea. Any hints are appreciated, Norbert

Stdb MySQL Protocol Driver update in squeaksource

A couple of updates to the Stdb* projects in SqueakSource. Project StdbMysqlProtocol: There is a new version of the protocol driver that can now handle authentication for MySQL users with old style (short hash) passwords. It handles the fallback silently during the handshake. This was an issue reported by Andreas for the previous version of the driver package. Project StdbMysqlImpl : There is a new version of the Stdb API implementation for MySQL. This one has some test infrastructure fixes, and consolidates the use of test credentials so that a single username/password combination is used for all tests. The packages were tested with MySQL 5.0.67 community edition under Mac OS X. Best, Anindya
