Hi folks. I had a good idea and and it perfect for someone that wants to help and don't know how. It is not the most entertained task, but I promise you will learn a lot. Mostly, if you are newcomer. The idea is basically to migrate the FAQ that is here: http://scg.unibe.ch/wiki/faq/pharofaq to a new section in the collaborative Pharo book: http://book.pharo-project.org/ So....any takers ? Let us know so that we generate a new user in the Book The idea is also to check whether what is says is still correct for pharo or if it needs an update. Or even how to improve it (from the view of a newcomer). Thanks Mariano

WebClient

Hi, Andreas Raab's 'new' WebClient/WebServer seems quite nice, as he says himself: As a result, we now have what I think is a pretty decent HTTP server and client implementation for Squeak 4.1 and hopefully we can nuke HTTPSocket sometime soon. WebClient is superior in every respect. Is this something that will / should fit seamlessly into Pharo ? Or even become preinstalled ? I didn't try his ConfigurationOfWebClient since the last version was unreadable and it seemed like an experiment, while his textual explanation was easy to follow. To load it into and to make the unit tests run in Pharo 1.0 I had to make a couple of fixes (to WebCookie#printOn: and WebServer class#serverString). Who should I sent these changes to ? But even then 1 unit test failed (#testServerDestroy). Furthermore, some the changes in his package WebClient-Pharo seem a bit dangerous, especially a modification to SocketStream#peek (and the failed test was doing a peek) and an override of String#, some others are unneccessary as far as I can see. OSProcess on Windows

Does anyone use OSProcess on Windows? If so can you tell me how to make it work please. OSProcess thisOSProcess command: 'cmd.exe /C notepad' Fails in two ways. It tries to output a message to stderr but fails to do so. The message it tries to output just says: "nextPutAll: 'cannot execute cmd.exe /C notepad'". I also tried to open a console with: OSProcess thisOSProcess openConsole but that seems to do nothing and gives no errors. Any help very welcome. Regards Bob

VM/Settings for Deploy

Hi, I am very happy that I managed to create a very small deploy image based on Pharo-1.1-11400-rc2. This image contains all of Seaside and Glorp/PostgreSQL and is still only about 12Mb. All this thanks to ScriptLoader's #cleanUpForProduction. Thanks a lot to all who made this possible. I noticed however that this image is handling my HTTP/Seaside benchmark consistenly faster on my Mac, about 80 to 85 req/s (Mac OS X 10.6.4, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM) than on my server (RHEL 4 (update 7), 2 Ghz AMD Opteron 175 Dual Core with 4GB RAM), about 55 to 65 req/s. On my Mac I use the Squeak 4.2.4beta1U VM, on my server the Squeak-4.0.3.2202 Unix VM. Next I tried the Squeak-4.0.3.2202 VM on my Mac. This resulted in about 60 to 70 req/s. Is it normal that the Unix VM is slower than the Mac VM ? Shouldn't a Linux server box be faster at networking/IO/CPU than a MacBook Pro running the full Mac OS X GUI ? Is there anything simple (low hanging fruit kind of stuff) that I can do to improve performance, either using command line options to the VM or using settings at the image level ? I currently run the VM with: Squeak-4.0.3.2202-linux_i386/bin/squeak -vm-display-null -vm-sound-null deploy.image What are others using in the Seaside deploy area ? Thanks, Sven

Finding packages

Sorry if this is a bit of a basic question. Could someone enlighten me on how to install packages please. I want to be able to run command files under windows from within Pharo. It looks like I need OsProcess or maybe CommandShell. I assume these should be installable from Monticello. I don't see any search facility in the Monticello Browser and tried a few repositories but failed to find what I needed. What's the best way to find packages. Thanks Bob

Changing Fonts in Pharo

I'm new to Pharo and am working through the PBE book. I would like to change the fonts (and their size) used in the OmniBrowser and generally throughout Pharo. In particular, the font in the text input panes. I'd like to be able to use DejaVu Sans Mono, if available. Failing that, the default font is OK, if it could just be larger. (or is there a zoom feature?) Can someone tell me how I can customize these settings? Error:invalid utf8 input detected.

Hi there! We are using Pharo to teach OOP in UTN university, Argentina. Some times students have the error Invalid utf8 input detected when loading an image or doing a file out of a category. I think it happens mostly (or always, i'm not sure) in the OneClicImage, when running on windows. Is it a known issue? Thanks!

Installing GlorpDBX on Pharo 1.1

What's the correct way to create anonymous subclasses in Pharo?

Hi everybody, I am attempting to create subclasses of existing classes at runtime. They must not be in their superclass' list of subclasses, because they have to be garbage collected when they are no longer needed. This is what I tried to create such a class in Pharo 1.0: newMeta := (Metaclass new) superclass: Rectangle class methodDictionary: MethodDictionary new format: Rectangle class format; yourself. newClass := (newMeta new) superclass: Rectangle methodDictionary: MethodDictionary new format: Rectangle format; setName: #MyRectangle; yourself. newClass new class == newClass "--> false" The result of "newClass new" seems to be an instance of Rectangle, not of newClass. The test at the end of the code snippet answers false. When I compile a new method in newClass and install it in newClass' methodDictionary, an instance will not understand a message with the method's selector. Almost the same code will do what I want in VisualWorks: | newMeta newClass | newMeta := (Metaclass new) superclass: Rectangle class; methodDictionary: MethodDictionary new; setInstanceFormat: Rectangle class format; yourself. newClass := (newMeta new) superclass: Rectangle; methodDictionary: MethodDictionary new; setInstanceFormat: Rectangle format; setName: #MyRectangle; yourself. newClass new class == newClass "--> true" Does anybody have an idea what the problem is and what can be done to circumvent it? Writing extensions

Hi all, I played with Squeak about 4 years ago and I built some extensions in C. I would like to do the same again with Pharo and I have a big lump of C I would like to interface to. Glorp & PostgresV2

Hi, A similar question regarding Glorp & PosgresV2: what is the official Pharo standpoint regarding this ? There is no ConfigurationOfGlorpNativePostgreSQL (there are some for DBX, but I don't need that). I used GlorpPharoLoader loadGlorpWithNativePostgreSQLDriver. I had to make some small changes to GlorpDriverPostgreSQL and PostgresV2 to make more tests succeed. The installer did also load the underscore.cs hack adding an ugly star in Monticello to Compiler (Scanner#xLetter). But all in all it does work great and fast. Is this something for the Pharo list or should I go ask my questions somewhere else ? Sven

Hi folks. There is a new Pharo 1.1 rc2 image for beta testing. It is based in PharoCore rc2 11400. A little remark is that this is the first release candidate, not the second one. There was a problem when building the PharoCore rc1 and thus, we used PharoCore RC2. To be concistent we call it Pharo 1.1 rc2 to this image. We are getting closer to the stable release of Pharo 1.1 so we would really appreaciate any kind of feedback. Priority of WeakArray finalizationProcess

While testing JNIPort on Pharo 1.0 and Pharo 1.1, I noticed that in Pharo 1.0, a JVM (a wrapper object for the Java Virtual Machine) could be initialized in ca. 4 seconds, while this needed 11 to 12 seconds in Pharo 1.1. When I profiled the JVM startup in 1.1, the profile reported that less than 20% of the time was spent there; the rest was not accounted for in the report. In Squeak 4.1, I encountered a deadlock problem related to Squeak's current WeakRegistry implementation when the JVM is started. This problem disappeared when I changed the finalizationProcess of WeakArray such that it runs at systemBackgroundPriority instead of userBackgroundPriority. Applying the same change to Pharo 1.1 makes a big difference. The JVM starts in 4.4 seconds, approximately matching the time it takes in Pharo 1.0. Starting the JVM in Squeak 4.1 is about 20% faster than Pharo 1.1. As the difference is in the part which is not accounted for by the time profiler, it is probably due to the differences in the implementation of WeakIdentityKeyDictionary which have an impact on the performance of the finalizationProcess. I am not sure if changing the priority of the finalizationProcess could possibly break something, and I also do not yet understand why changing the priority makes such a big difference both in Squeak and Pharo. How should this issue be handled? Should I add this as issues to the bug tracking tools for Pharo and Squeak respectively? Cheers, Joachim Geidel

Hi, Yet another question. I keep hearing and reading that Pharo 1.1 is quite usable and a lot better than 1.0 that I am currently using. Is that true ? If I download Pharo-1.1-11367-Betadev10.05.1 how do I then keep up to date with the development that is presumably still going on ? It seems like only Pharo-Core images have this 'software update' world menu item ? Or do I just have to keep on downloading the lastest released beta ? Sorry for all the beginner questions... Alien for Squeak 4.1/Pharo 1.1?

I somehow managed to load Alien into both Squeak 4.1 and Pharo 1.1. You can see what I had to do in the installation instructions for JNIPort on SqueakSource. It's not for the faint of heart... ;-) In Squeak, this meant removing the Alien-Prereqs package and all Parser/Scanner/MethodNode changes, as they are redundant or obsolete in Squeak 4.1. I have a version of the Alien-Core Monticello package which loads cleanly in Squeak 4.1, if anybody is interested. However, this package does not load in Pharo 1.1 beta 11367 - some of the changes I removed still seem to be needed there. What are the plans for Alien? When will it be made available for Squeak 4.1 and Pharo 1.1? I am interested in this because I need Alien as the base for JNIPort, and I would like to at least run the JNIPort test suite on a stable version of Alien before officially releasing JNIPort 2.0. JNIPort preview for Pharo available on SqueakSource

I have made a preview release of JNIPort for Pharo/Squeak available on SqueakSource: http://www.squeaksource.com/JNIPort.html JNIPort is a Smalltalk library which allows Java code to be invoked from Smalltalk. It acts as a bridge between the world of Smalltalk objects and a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) where Java code is executing. If you want to know what can be done with JNIPort, see http://philemonworks.wordpress.com/2010/04/29/google-api-access-from-smallta lk-using-jniport/ for an example. Installation instructions are on the Wiki at SqueakSource. See http://jniport.wikispaces.com/ for more information about JNIPort. The current state of the Pharo/Squeak version of JNIPort (as of 7 June 2010): * Callbacks from Java to Smalltalk are not yet supported. * In contrast to VisualWorks and Dolphin, JNIPort does not create ghost classes as wrappers for Java classes, but creates Â³realÂ² classes which can be seen in the system browser. It also does not copy prototypes of CompiledMethods when a wrapper class or a Java class is created, because this causes VM failures in Pharo 1.0. Instead, methods are compiled from source code. This has a performance impact, of course. * Another difference from the VisualWorks and Dolphin versions is that wrappers for Java methods without arguments donÂ¹t have selectors ending with an awkward Â³_nullÂ² suffix. * JNIPort has been developed and tested with Pharo 1.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.3. If it works in Squeak and on other operating systems has yet to be tested. * I have briefly tested JNIPort with Pharo 1.1 beta 11367, but this needed some manual modifications of Alien Â without them Alien causes problems in Pharo 1.1. * In Pharo 1.1, starting a JVM needs 11 seconds vs. 4 seconds in Pharo 1.0. I donÂ¹t know yet why. * I donÂ¹t have a Metacello configuration yet. The next steps will be: * Adding support for callbacks from Java to Smalltalk. * Testing it on more platforms. * Reorganization of the documentation on the JNIPort wiki, and addition of Pharo/Squeak specific documentation similar to the documentation for the VisualWorks version. * Release of JNIPort 2.0 for VisualWorks and Pharo/Squeak when everything is stable. This will be after the release of Pharo 1.1. If it works in Squeak 4.1 or on Linux or Windows, please let me know, especially if you had to do something which might be worth mentioning in the installation instructions.
