Z3950 on OSX: module yaz3 not found

Hi, I want to use http://www.squeaksource.com/Z3950 Following install instructions, I've dowloaded yaz sources (I've tried 4.1.2 and 3.0.52) as it seems there's no binary for OSX, ./configure && make && make install. Then using latest Seaside One Click image I've copied /usr/local/lib/*yaz* in Seaside.app/Contents/MacOS $ ls ~/Downloads/Seaside.app/Contents/MacOS/ Squeak VM Opt libyaz.a libyaz.la libyaz_icu.a libyaz_icu.la libyaz_server.a libyaz_server.la libyaz.3.dylib libyaz.dylib libyaz_icu.3.dylib libyaz_icu.dylib libyaz_server.3.dylib libyaz_server.dylib But then I have a External Module Not Found on YAZPQFFFILibrary>>createParser " YAZPQDFFILibrary default createParser " <cdecl: YAZPQFParser 'yaz_pqf_create' (void) module: 'yaz3'> ^ self externalCallFailed Any hint ? Help (perfect for newcomers) migrating a technical FAQ

Hi folks. I had a good idea and and it perfect for someone that wants to help and don't know how. It is not the most entertained task, but I promise you will learn a lot. Mostly, if you are newcomer. The idea is basically to migrate the FAQ that is here: http://scg.unibe.ch/wiki/faq/pharofaq to a new section in the collaborative Pharo book: http://book.pharo-project.org/ So....any takers ? Let us know so that we generate a new user in the Book The idea is also to check whether what is says is still correct for pharo or if it needs an update. Thinking again about this idea of voting system for features we would like to see in Pharo. I won't pay 10 euros / month for someone to develop full time on Pharo on what I do not control (may not be the best words to explain my feelings :) But I'm ready to give 30 to 50 euros to raise money to develop the most wanted feature from a voting system. This give more visibility. It's easier to make a one shot donation than give XXeuros/month. So one way to achieve this is to set up a voting system AND associated raising money system to develop the most wanted feature for one month. Another way is to pick the most wanted feature for Google Summer of code. With enough money one can stop his work for one month and develop exclusively for Pharo. If it's too hard to raise money for one month, we can try 15 days. Pharo runtime engine

first of all pardon my ignorance, trying to be a better community member but I'm still behind. Has the pharo team contemplated setting up the notion of an official "pharo runtime engine" (PRE) , to be specific users would download the runtime engine and subsequently only the "parcels" i.e. whatever the Pharo counterpart is (.st file ins ?) is distributed to users. Although Cincom does not officially support this, its actually quite simple to setup and its the way I am accustomed to delivering apps. Many in the VW community do as well. I long ago abandoned the strip down model but rather "build up". Multi window Pharo

Is it still the case the all UIs basically reside within the "one" host Window (World)? Loading Seaside into an existing image

First of all, do I really want to install Seaside into an existing image, or should I import my stuff into a dedicated Seaside image? After opening the Repository on 'Seaside', from the Monticello browser, which version of Seaside to I take from the left column of the Repository? And then which one from the right column? I'm assuming I want the latest 'stable' version. I think it's 3.0, but I don't see it in there? I just took a look at the Seaside website and it looks like there is a 'one-click' install for Windows. Is this the best (recommended) way to get it? I don't mind doing things manually. Are there 'image' and 'changes' files that I can download without doing the 'one-click' thing? Sorry for the barrage of questions. Perhaps just a simple answer will suffice. Dan

CPU utilisation

I'm new here so I'm sorry if this is something already covered. I spent a bit of time browsing the archive but didn't see anything obvious. When Pharo is under load it doesn't appear to making use of all processor cores. I'm using Pharo-1.1.1-- Latest update: #11414 with VM 4.2.1b1 under Mac OS X with a Core 2 Duo. Attached is an image of the CPU history: The thing to notice is that it only appears to be using a single core at any one time. Is this a known issue? Cheers, Phil

Nested classes

Hi, perhaps a bit off topic, but I was wondering from those that brought Traits to ST, what are their thoughts of the use of nested classes such as used in Ruby and other languages. Good idea? If so should Smalltalk integrate these? Why? On 64bit systems you just need to load the 32bit libs by installing the package 'ia32-libs'. On Debian and Ubuntu you can just apt-get install ia32-libs then the one-click app will work just fine. I imagine its the same package name on other distros but I don't know for sure.

Incorrect cursor behavior in right-to-left scripts

Hi all, I noted incorrect cursor behavior in right-to-left script. When right-to-left script (Hebrew for example) is used the cursor should not advance to next character, but stay in its position and let the characters advance as the text is being inserted. Does anybody knows how to change the cursor's behavior? Thank you, Alex Albitov

Hello, I recently updated my system to a 64bit one I had trouble running Pharo. I made the one click image run by adding manually the missing libraries to /usr/lib32 but its quite annoing to do that. So I would like to ask Is there a 64 bit vm? Is there a linux package that contains all necessary lib files to run Pharo in a 64 bit linux? Hi all, I'm a real newbie in Pharo and Smalltalk. I want to type in Cyrillic and Hebrew. However I get question marks. I tried to change fonts, but I have only to available fonts: * Accuny * Bitmap DejaVu Sans Which don't have Unicode glyphs. When I try to update fonts from the system, I don't see any result. Installing Morphic UI designer in Pharo 1.1

Pardon the newbie question but I yet don't have a grip how Squeaker's load packages , it seems that there are many, many ways of doing so. In anycase, to my immediate need I would like to check out Morphic Designer. I've tried following the instructions on their web site which are: (Installer mc http: 'http://www.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/hirschfeld/squeaksource/') project: 'MetacelloRepository'; install: 'ConfigurationOfDesigner'. ConfigurationOfDesigner load. Keyboard shortcuts

I have discovered a bunch of keyboard shortcuts on my own but is there someplace I can find a full list? A specific shortcut that would really be convenient is to be able to switch between Pharo 'morphs', like how I do with alt+tab on Windows. For example, I'm always switching between a workspace and the system browser. I'd like not to have to reach for the mouse each time. Is there such a beast? Dan

I have a User that hold a Collection of decisions. Each decision holds a sorted collection of candidates and a sorted collection of objectives. User is a subclass of SDActiveRecord. Feature requests

Ok, so here goes an attempt of defining how I think feature requests could be handled and why I think that the meritocracy is not always the best choice. UserVoice and similar sites The idea is to let people ask for features they want in a quick way. I think my question about native window support could be a good example: someone ask if a feature exists. If it doesn't, he can just go and record somewhere "hey, I would like X". If other people also want X they can put a vote (or more than one) into the feature. Since votes are finite per user you have to think where are you putting your vote. Generally the product owner would choose some of the top ranked requests and decide to implement them. How many requests are selected per release or what is the criteria for choosing them is up to the product owner (e.g. you may choose #1 and #3 in the ranking, since #2 may be too complex for a given release). I guess that as long as the rules are clear (e.g. choose at least 1 feature request from the top five or whatever the dev team feels is ok for them) things would run smooth. Of course you can consider alternatives, like giving contributors more votes to encourage participation, get an extra vote for each bug you found, etc. Advantages: Its easy, it welcomes newcomers, it allows to re-think your vote or change it if you see that someone posted a feature that you also require, it allows the dev team to measure the user's expectations. Disadvantages: if you don't have enough population the requests may not reflect the real community needs, as a dev team you may end up implementing something you don't consider relevant. About Meritocracy While I understand the idea behind "first do something, then ask for something" I don't think it is always the best choice. For someone to commit to do something he must feel he is inside a community, and that takes some time. Of course I'm not saying that someone who just downloaded Pharo should dictate what will be included in the next release, I'm just saying that his voice shouldn't be banned because he hasn't yet contributed. And I am convinced that it is more likely to have a newcomer commited to a cause if you listen to him rather than if you say "first do something, then I may listen to your requests". But what concerned me the most was this: The only influence we deeply understand is ***Contributions*** with either videos, pdf, ads, promotion actions or ST code. So if you want something to happen for real in pharo then you should consider how you can make this happens. So how do you measure someone's contribution and the rights he has? Talking about pharo at my university counts for changing a line of code, writing some slides for a method, creating a bunch of screencasts for some classes? Also, contributing to Smalltalk in general counts as a contribution to Pharo? Up to what extent? And if I contributed and you never knew? Should I present my credentials asking for your reconsideration? My point is that, while contributions are fine and I also like for people to give in return for what they received, it is sometimes hard to measure and be fair to everybody. As you explained it seems that the decision rests in the subjective view of the core developers. That model is of course a valid one, I just consider it is not how healthy communities are built.
