Pharo consortium agreement

Dear Pharoers Here is the result of the work we did around the consortium for Pharo for about 2 years. We took into account all your remarks over the years and we think that the result is good and corresponds to what the community can support. This consortium is important for Pharo's future and it will help us to deliver a system to help you making business. Our goal is to be able to collect fundings to pay at least one full time engineer. The idea is that all the consortium members will sign the same agreement. We will not handle modifications per partners. Now since we are starting the process if you spot some glitches on the form let us know. We can discuss and fully stabilize one version. We suggest to read the document. - If you agree to sign it and send it to us (in two copies if you do it by surface mail at INRIA - S. Ducasse - Pharo, 40, avenue Halley, Parc Scientifique de la Haute Borne, BÃ¢t.A, Park Plaza, Villeneuve d'Ascq, FR-59650, France.), so that we sign it too. - Don't forget to complete your legal mention on first page and your contact details on article 14 before signing. :) We will launch soon two web sites: - one for the Pharo user association and - one for the Pharo consortium. A side note: we will communicate about it later and separately but Inria decided to support the consortium by paying one extra year to Igor Stasenko. This is around 60 Keuros in addition to the year of Esteban Lorenzano and previous years of Igor. I really want to thank Inria for the constant support and the work of S. Karpf, P. Moreau and S. Recovering Changes from a broken image

Hi, One of the cool things of Smalltalk's images/changes file is that you can do a World Menu > Tools > Recover lost changesâ¦ to get back most [1] of your code in case your image/OS/machine suddenly crashed or you forgot to save your image or commit your Monticello packages. But we all have encountered the situation where the image is broken, saved in such a state that it no longer starts up properly. In that case your code might seem lost forever. No, it is not ! Two days ago I had this problem myself and I remembered something Marcus said some time ago: you can access the changes file of one (in casu your broken image) from another (working) image to select/recover the changes you want. It worked perfectly. The easiest procedure it to copy the .changes file from the broken image and rename its extension to .cs and then open it from a World Menu > Tools > File Browser and open a Changes browser on it. I found this very useful. This is a really important technique to be aware of. stream usage in workspace

I am refereshing my familiarity with streams by looking at PharoByExample1 which says... "You have to remember that each time you open a stream on a ï¬le, you have to close it too." Does that mean if in Workspace I iteratively develop some code to process a stream, so that I am continually running... myStream := FileStream readOnlyFileNamed: 'C:\test.txt. ...so that 'myStream' is overwritten each time such that I lose reference to the previous stream, and I am no longer able to send #close to it, am I creating a memory leak in my image ? My prior assumption has been that once 'myStream' drops the reference drops to the previous stream, garbage collection would take care of 'everything'. cheers -ben

secure sockets https in Zinc

In the method... ZnNetworkingUtils >> streamClassForScheme: scheme scheme = #http ifTrue: [ ^ self socketStreamClass ]. scheme = #https ifTrue: [ ^ self secureSocketStreamClass ifNil: [ self error: 'No secure socket stream class set or available' ] ]. (ZnUnknownScheme scheme: scheme) signal I am getting the error indicating the lack fo secureSocketStreamClass. The initialize and lazy-initialization try to use ZdcSecureSocketStream, but that is not found. I am using Pharo 1.4 (downloaded & configured last summer) with Pier3 loaded, along with Zinc-HTTP (SvenVanCaekenberghe.280), Zinc-Path-HTTPSocket (StephaneDucasse.2) and Zinc-Seaside (SvenVanCaekenberghe.22). I see numerous updates to those and various other new packages. I believe what I have was pulled in by the following last summer: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfPier3'; load. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfPier3) load. Gofer it squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfPier3AddOns'; load. Hi All, Is anyone maintaining the above package? I had a few issues when trying to use it in Pharo 1.4 Summer but have done a few fixes and it is now working well for me; would like to run them by someone who knows a bit more about it first. Thanks Chris

Acquiring lock, releasing in callback

Hello Dear Pharo users, threads and co. are giving me headaches :-) I wanted to ask for advice... What do I use in Pharo to prevent more than one thread entering a region, but "releasing" the exclusivity in another block/callback? For example, let's suppose there is an hypothetical class "Lock" that does that. lock acquire. longOperation performWhenFinished: [ callback code ... lock release ]. ... rest of the program ... Is there something like that? Or do I have to simulate it with something else? (Semaphore?) I am aware or Monitor/Mutex critical:, but I am not sure I can use it in my case. I found this http://www.jarober.com/blog/blogView?showComments=true&printTitle=IM_98:_Rt… ,about RTalk , that is not only smalltalk run on top of JVM but almost the entire environment.Â The problem is that I cant seem to be able to find via google any site that contains the source code or something I could use ? Does anyone know if there is any official website for RTalk ? It looks quite promising and I would like to give it a try.

Zodiac long-term streaming

My image is connected to an ssl streaming server with Zodiac... Okay, right off the bat, how cool is that?! Thanks, Sven! Anyway, using "ZnClient streaming: true; post: 'https://', url contents: data", I have a ZdcSecureSocketStream waiting for more data. Is there a way to specify "no timeout"? Since the connection is only good for 24 hours, I was thinking to just set the timeout to be a little longer than that, but I was curious. garbage collection questions

1. Is there a wiki entry about the GC somewhere that provides advice about how to tune the GC using #setGCParameters? 2. If I have two objects with accessors: Object subclass: #ObjectA instanceVariableNames: 'objectB' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'Temp' Object subclass: #ObjectB instanceVariableNames: 'objectA' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: '' category: 'Temp' and create an instance of each in a workspace and then set them up: |a b| a:=ObjectA new. b:=ObjectB new. a objectB: b. b objectA: a. and close the workspace then those instances of ObjectA & ObjectB will never be garbage collected, correct? Its my understanding that I'd need to nil out the instance variables of both instances to have them GCd as they both refer strongly to each other. Is that right? 3. How can I learn when an incremental or full GC run will happen? Is it dependent upon on the size of new or old memory or the overall size of the image or ... ? It seems like putting a #halt in a random spot could easily lead to a stuck image. Thanks for your help Paul

A REST API passed me #[0 0 1 58 153 199 12 211], which it swears is a unix timestamp within the last day... I don't see how that's possible... Any ideas?
