Any thoughts on improving MC browser?

I was just about to ask how do I compare two arbitrary versions in Monticello - as I canât multiselect - until I realised that the Diff button prompts you for a version against what you have currently selected. This is a very weird UI experience. Now that we seem to have multi-select widgets - are there any proposals to improve MC? Tim

PharoLauncher can only run 1 instance on OSX?

I really like the PharoLauncher project - itâs very handy. However Iâve noticed that on OSX when I launch an image and then try and run PhaorLauncher (e.g. pharo.app) again, it just switches me to my already running image? Anyone know why it does that - or if there is some way to avoid it? iâm wondering it its the way that the launcher, launches the images (is it an os sub-process or something - and so this is why it just switches back to that process if you try and run it again?). Accessing DLLs in Smalltalk/V

I found an old Smalltalk/V imagine from 2000 and tracked down how I was able add calls to Windows DLLs and to add my own. It was in the class DynamicLinkLibrary and its subclasses, e. g., a call to the GDIDLL to draw a Bezier spline (which I believe I added) was: bezierTo: hDC lpPoints: anLPPOINT count: anInt <api: PolyBezierTo ulong struct ulong boolean> ^self invalidArgument I added by own DLL to do matrix transformations that was written in ASSEMBLER to optimized the floating point processor pipelining (a start operation every cycle while it took 3 cycles to complete) and it performed about 15% better. I have not found anything similar in Pharo, but it must if external libraries are used. NativeBoost seems to come close, but I cannot find any documentation. Can someone point me to some documentation, code, anything? It is greatly appreciated. bw

Always asking for developer initials in 4,0?

Iâve noticed quite a few times now in the Pharo 4.0 images - that I keep getting multiple prompts to enter my developer initials. I canât put my finger on it - I think its when I open a SystemBrowser in a new image - and just edit a class comment (it then prompts me for initials which is correct). However, if I then open the World Help - and then go back to my class comment and enter some new text - it often prompts me again? After doing this a few times - it then seemed to stick - so Iâm not exactly sure what causes it (this was in build 40123 - so reasonably recent). I mention it in case someone else has noticed this as well. Tim

How to try out: =============== 1. load "Bootstrap" from Configuration browser in Pharo 3.0 2. evaluate ZnZincServerAdaptor startOn: 8080 3. point browser to http://localhost:8080/bootstrap Side note: As the config also loads newer seaside you may also notice the return of the "Seaside Control Panel" in the Tools menu aftwards where you can also control the server as described in the regular Seaside docu. Managing updates/patches in Pharo with Metacello

Hi, How do you manage released versions updates in Metacello? E.g. I have a version 2.1, with its spec with a dependency to 'PackageA.11.mcz'. Later I find a bug which requires a new version of PackageA.11.mcz, everything goes ok as in the development/bleedingEdge version, which doesn't specify the file name, but how should I "backport" the change? What I am doing now is changing the version spec for '2.1' and updating the reference to 'PackageA.11.mcz' to 'PackageA.12.mcz', but I'm afraid this isn't the proper way of doing this. How do you manage this? In git I'd merge the commit in the 2.1 version branch, and then the CI that depends on such branch would incorporate the change. Regards! Esteban A. Maringolo

Two Questions from a Newbie

Konnichiwa First thanks to those that gave me some directions to start with Pharo / Smalltalk. Now I have some questions that I'm sure are very stupid. The first one is, is there a way to use the bouncing atoms and the lights on on Pharo 3? Because I tried to build it in there and it doesn't work The second one is why there are like three different smalltalk environments? Pharo Squeek and Cuis? What are the differences? Is there a standard? I find this extremelly intriguing as it seems like there is a lot of dupplicate effort? The third one is which is the line between the core language and frameworks and libraries in Pharo? I found that, for instance Cuis has something like a basic image and some external frameworks, pharo has some internal frameworks and lots of externals. This is weird from someone comming from other languages. The fourth is I found that documentation is very, very scarce especially for some frameworks. This is also a major drawback for a newcomer to pharo. A very thick entry barrier. NativeBoost : optimisation of the machine code generation

Hi everyone, I'm trying to reduce the computation time of the following pseudo-code: - memory allocation (~40 doubles) - object heap to C heap copying - NativeBoost call (nbCall:) - memory freeing The time profiling results are bellow: - 24*3600 calls : > 1 minute - 24*3600 calls with only memory allocation and copying : < 1 second - 1 call with a 24*3600 loop inside de C code : < 1 second So it appears that the very coslty step is the transition from Pharo to C. And I was wondering if it was possible to drasticly reduce this time by doing something like, generate the the machine code once and call it multiple time ? Thanks in advance ! Thomas.

Slice loading/merging differences question

Hi - I am still a bit confused about the difference between load vs. merge with Monticello? Last month, when I tried to verify a bug fix, I did a load - and it caused other things (dependencies?) to be loaded into my clean image and so I ended up with something else in a broken state. So I had to do a Merge - get just the specific fixes and I could prove everything worked. Yesterday however I wanted to test a fix Damien made for bug 13526. But when I Merged it, I hit a DNU and then noticed he had put the following comment (Slice .2 depends on 13787). So I repeated the same merge step for 13787 and it then worked (apart from another edge case I found and he has now fixed). But this has got me thinking, I donât really understand the difference between merge/load. Can someone explain it to me in the above context? Should I have âloadedâ 13526 so that it pulled in the dependency indicated? (I notice in the slice description - it shows - Dependencies: Tool-Base-DamienPollet.24). I thought Monticello managed dependencies - so now Iâm confused why I need to do Merge anyway? Related to this, when the next âreleaseâ image gets built - how are these slices assembled such that Tool-Base-DamienPollet.24 is correctly loaded in release image? Thanks for any help. Tim
