What can you do with Pharo?

I am new to Pharo, so pardon my ignorance. I used to be a professional developer between 1996 and 2007 during which time I developed personal Management Information Systems for employees at my company's HRD using Microsoft Access, then moved on to leading a team of C++ developers to build a graphical operating environment atop the bare Linux kernel, then took up rapid prototyping using PHP at various Web-related startups. I have been aware of Smalltalk since 1999 and have only fiddled-around with it, though have failed to learn how to produce software due to the different syntax (as compared to C++ and PHP). I would like to focus on Smalltalk more seriously and found the cleanness of Pharo to be quite refreshing. My problem is that I can't figure out what I could build using the wonderful tools in the amazing environment that is Pharo. Project ideas are most welcome, though, I no longer wish to develop for the Web. Best regards, ~Kathe Â

Cairo rendering - why the difference between Pharo and VisualWorks - Quartz?

Hi, I am working on a proof of concept reimplementation of an application developed in VisualWorks using Cairo and Pango. When I compare the renderings I see that the VisualWorks has a finer grained resolution. Initially I thought is was to do with my anti aliasing settings, but upon further investigation I'm wondering if it is because the VisualWorks uses the Quartz backend. Please see the attached for a comparison - Pharo rendering using Cairo and Pango on the left, VisualWorks using Cairo and Pango on the right. Notice the almost double the number of "pixels". I've tried switching to using the Quartz Athens surface, but nothing gets displayed. I would appreciate it if someone can confirm that my analysis is correct, and that in order to get the better results I would need to hook up to the Quartz backend? Thanks, Stewart

For our January meeting, we'll be hosting GemTalk's Martin McClure who will talk about a new Smalltalk IDE - Sparkle. If you're setting out to develop a Smalltalk IDE from scratch, what design decisions do you make? You'd love to "fix" the things that have long annoyed you in existing IDEs, but new designs risk creating their own novel annoyances. The Sparkle project-in-progress is creating a new and not entirely conventional development environment for GemStone Smalltalk. Just got an email this morning containing: The following packages are currently pending an upgrade: linux-firmware 1.187.25 pharo9 9.0.11-0 This feels great and is highly appreciated that we have that now. Hello, I have released a new version of the Pharo VM for Pharo 9 and Pharo 10. This VM is accessible right now from Zero-Conf, updating it in the Pharo Launcher or using the usual downloads (as described in pharo.org/download) This version includes a series of minor bug fixes. Changelog: - Include FloatArrayPlugin in the build - Updating SDL2 to 2.0.18 for OSX X86_64 - Using Pharo 10 image as VMMaker image - Fixing issue in message counting on non-JIT VM Thanks a lot, and any doubt please let me know. Ghost subclass

Hi I currently have a problem that I am unable to resolve. I am working on a personal project. I created a Class âERAElementâ and four subclasses: âComponentâ, âCriticalIssueâ, âDecisionâ and âRequirementâ. A while ago I removed he subclass Component, and naturally Pharo will not let me create an instance of this subclasses.Â However it is still listed in the ERAElement subclass collection. As shown below. I can test for existence of each subclass as shown below: However the same code will not accept Component as a possible value. I can even create a new Subclass Component and get two (different) subclasses with the same name. Any thoughts as to what is going on and if so how to resolve the problem? Hello everybody! This year I was not expecting to have stand since it seemed that there was no stands at all. But i was mistaken at many levels. Not only there are stands but also i did not have to do much for ensuring participation: We are on board. This year just as 2021 because of covid fosdem is online, as well as our stand. Dear all, Pharo-WebView package is now available on GitHub at https://github.com/eftomi/Pharo-Webview. Pharo-WebView is a package which implements a binding to webview dll library available at https://github.com/webview/webview in Pharo. Webview allows you to show HTML user interfaces in a native window, inject JavaScript code and HTML content into the window. It renders HTML originating via web requests or as a direct input. I tested it on Windows 64 bit in Pharo 64, I plan to do that on Pharo 32 and Linux, however I don't have access to Mac, so if anybody is interested, I'd be grateful :-) Best wishes, Tomaz
