Recovering PNG/JPG images that were automatically serialized as FUEL when storing into external database

Hi, I was storing Pharo objects into an external SQLite3 database. It went fine, but now all my png/jpg images are serialized with FUEL, when I try to see them inside SQLite and when I import them back to the image, they're long byte streams. There is any way to recover the images as png/jpg morphs that visible inside the image again? How can I disable this automatic serialization for making the database portable without using FUEL to recover back the PNG/JPG images? Thanks, Offray

Spec vs Brick vs Glamour vs Morphic vs WTF?

Ok! I'm really confused. I'm wanting to write new GUI and I have no idea which framework to use. There is very little documentation on any of these and I don't see a clear cut statement of direction as to where the Pharo community is heading. Can someone please advise? Pharo Mooc

âHi, on the main Pharo page I see Pharo Mooc mentioned. Obviously I am too late to join. Will there be a similar course in the (near) future? Are there other (video) courses available? I checked Udemy and O'Reilly, but alas, Smalltalk isn't that popular anymore nowadays... Thx, Arie

a bug in Spec that I wont fix

Hi to whom it concerns. Working with Spec (Pharo 4.0) I needed to dynamically update the ButtonModel BalloonHelp. Since it did not work, I searched and found that ButtonModel initializes helpHolder again thus removing the changeBlock set in AbstractWidgetModel. The statement < helpHolder := nil asValueHolder. > in ButtonModel>>initialize has to be removed. Since I do not yet work with Pharo 5 I propose that somebody working with Pharo 5 would fix this. How do I convert a FileTree project to Metadataless GitFileTree project?

Thierry, I think I tried the obvious: 1. open existing repository with gitfiletree:// 2. reload all packages from gitfiletree repo and remove old filetree:// repo from each package 3. edit .filetree and add `"Metadata" : "false"` but when I save a package I continue to get metadata created ... I even tried removing and adding the repo after editting the .filetree file .... I have a handful of additional random things that I will try, but I think it is also time to find out the proper technique:) I want to gain experience with GitFileTree; test out the Metacello Cypress mode; and perhaps honor the `"Metadata" : "false"` in the GemStone version of FileTree ... With a short time of usage, I would really like to be able to save all of the packages in a project (including the BaselineOf) in one commit ... I often have multi-package units of work that really should be committed together and of course if a method is moved across a package boundary, the independent commits don't allow git to recognize the move as a "rename" ... Also I'm hoping that in metadataless mode I stop scanning the entire known repository universe for package versions that will not be found anywhere but in the repositories that I've explicitly associated with the the package itself:) Thanks, Dale

can pharo change encoding of a file?

Hi, is there a way to reencode a file from within Pharo? e.g. I have a file in CP1250 encoding and I want to change it to UTF-8. In linux I would do something like "recode cp1250..utf8 file.txt". But can Pharo do that natively, or do I need to defer to the system with FFI/OSSubprocess? Thanks, Peter

[UFFI] Getting an array of opaque structures filled

Hello everyone, I have a question about the UFFI API. I have the following function: ssize_t libusb_get_device_list (libusb_context *ctx, libusb_device ***list) where libusb_device is an opaque structure. I made a type mapping "ssize_t" -> "int" and an object inheriting from FFIExternalObject for the "libusb_context" (others methods using it are working). I can not find how to get an array filled with libusb_device using UFFI from Pharo. :-( Thanks in advance, Julien

SIGPLAN Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop @ SPLASH'16 Amsterdam, The Netherlands (part of SPLASH 2016) Tuesday, November 1st, 2016 http://2016.splashcon.org/track/splash-2016-plmw We are pleased to invite students interested in programming languages to the Programming Languages Mentoring Workshop (PLMW) at SPLASH. The goal of this workshop is to introduce senior undergraduate and early graduate students to research topics in programming languages as well as provide career mentoring advice. We have recruited leaders from the programming languages community to provide overviews of current research topics and give students valuable advice about how to thrive in graduate school, search for a job, and cultivate habits and skills that will help them in research careers. This workshop is part of the activities surrounding SPLASH, and takes place the day before the main conference. A key goal of the workshop is to make SPLASH more accessible to newcomers. Through the generous donation of our sponsors, we are able to provide travel scholarships to fund student participation. These travel scholarships will cover reasonable travel expenses (airfare and hotel) for attendance at both the workshop and the following main three days of SPLASH. The workshop is open to all. Students with alternative sources of funding for their travel and registration fees are welcome.
