Hi Everyone, As far as I can tell, JPEGReadWriter in Pharo 7 doesn't read (or write) the image metadata, e.g. title, keywords, exposure time, etc. Is anyone aware of a package that does? Thanks! Alistair

Pharo is unresponsive after forcing quit

Hi, [Pharo 10 on Mac Monterey] Due to the multi-process nature of Bonjour that I'm attempting to interface to, I am crashing the system ALOT as it disappears down a black hole and I try to figure out the cause. However, I've noticed that most of the time when I restart Pharo it is unresponsive to clicks and I have to relaunch Pharo AGAIN! Argh....! The mouse moves but no one is at home. Right click brings up menus, but they don't respond. As I move the mouse, list items are highlighted. As this is a completely new OS process, I'm wondering what is causing this behaviour? Has anyone else experienced this, or have an explanation? Cheers, Stewart

Pharo Enterprise book HTML chapter links

Hi, All the Chapter Topics links on https://books.pharo.org/enterprise-pharo/ (bottom left side) are broken. Is it still possible to link to individual chapters ? Can someone have a look, it would be a shame to let this bit rot. Thx, Sven PS: Looking at the other books it seems HTML reading is completely gone, what a shame. This used to work fine.

Hi List I need some help with Metacello, and may be git too I would like to be able to, in a running headless image, load the last commit of a git repo Something like Metacello new baseline:'MyProject'; repository: 'github://myUser/MyProject:main/myProject'; load. works just once and may open some dialogs Something like this [ [ Metacello new baseline:'MyProject'; repository: 'github://myUser/MyProject:main/myProject'; onConflictUseIncoming; load. ] on: MetacelloSkipDirtyPackageLoad do: [ :ex | ex resume: false ]. ] on: MCMergeOrLoadWarning do: [ :ex | ex load ]. Avoids the dialogs and alerts but the code is still not updated. My intention is to be able to 'refresh' a running seaside image with its latest development version from a git repo (avoiding to personally reach the server and rebuild the docker image) What am I missing? A question about #beginsWith: and #endsWith:

I've just tracked down a nasty little problem porting some code to Pharo. As a result, I have added to the comments in my own versions of these methods. beginsWith: aSequence "Answer true if aSequence is a prefix of the receiver. This makes sense for all sequences. There is a compatibility issue concerning 'abc' beginsWith: '' + VisualWorks, Dolphin, astc, GNU ST (where the method is called #startsWith:) and VisualAge (where the method is called #wbBeginsWith:) agree than EVERY sequence begins with an empty prefix. - Squeak and Pharo agree that NO sequence begins with an empty sequence. # ST/X chooses compatibility with Squeak, heaving a big unhappy sigh, and adds #startsWith: to have something sensible to use. Now ST/X *thinks* it is compatible with VW, though it isn't, so I wonder if this was a bug that VW fixed and Squeak didn't? astc goes with the majority here. This is also compatible with Haskell, ML, and with StartsWith in C# and startsWith in Java." ^self beginsWith: aSequence ignoringCase: false endsWith: aSequence "Answer true if aSequence is a suffix of the receiver. This is very good news indeed, but It is not exactly what most users would prefer. On a Retina MacBook, you can set an apparent display resolution (System Preferences.../ Displays). By default, my 2019 15" MBP suggest half "real" resolution ("Looks like 1440x900" when LCD is 2880x1800). In this case, the new VM offers the true native resolution to Cuis / Squeak. So, in this case, it works perfectly well, and everything looks really great. The problem is that MacOs supports several other apparent resolutions. Many people, me included, prefer "Looks like 1680x1050" or "Looks like 1920x1200") to have more room for other Mac apps. But in these cases, the VM doesn't offer the LCD native resolution to Cuis / Squeak anymore. It offers twice the apparent resolution, i.e. 3360x2100 or 3840x2400. Then MacOs scales this higher virtual resolution to the actual 2880x1800, but it generates visual artifacts and a decrease in visual quality. For my own private use, the solution is to use the EasyRes application, and set the display to the true 2880x1800 resolution. When I do this, Cuis gets the corrrect Display size both with previous and newer VMs. But it would be great if there was a way for other Cuis / Squeak users to get their true Display resolution by default, and without needing to change OS settings each time they start their favorite Smalltalk. The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be held on Wednesday, April 27th 2022. Newspeak ( https://bracha.org/Site/Newspeak.html ) is a programming system in the Smalltalk tradition, whose current incarnation runs in the web browser. Newspeak is designed to provide the liveness Smalltalkers expect, as well as features atypical of Smalltalk such as modularity, security and good interoperability with the surrounding ecosystem. In this talk, we'll explain how and why Newspeak differs from Smalltalk and demonstrate the Newspeak IDE. Gilad Bracha is the creator of the Newspeak programming language and a well known researcher in the area of object-oriented programming languages. He was awarded the senior Dahl-Nygaard prize in 2017. He is currently a Technical Fellow at F5, and has held positions at Google, SAP Labs, Cadence, and Sun. He has authored or co-authored several books including the Java Language and Virtual Machine Specifications, and the Dart Programming Language. Prior to joining Sun, he worked on Strongtalk, the Animorphic Smalltalk System. He received his B.Sc in Mathematics and Computer Science from Ben Gurion University in Israel and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Utah. This will be an online meeting from home.
