Hi Everyone, As far as I can tell, JPEGReadWriter in Pharo 7 doesn't read (or write) the image metadata, e.g. title, keywords, exposure time, etc. Is anyone aware of a package that does? Thanks! Alistair

WebDav and CalDav in Pharo ?

Hi all, I do some experiments with iCal. For now I serve a full calendar over HTTP. Not bad, but it is read only. Iâd like to try CalDAV. I was looking for it, and also webDAV. Gofer it smalltalkhubUser: 'UdoSchneider' project: 'FileSystemNetwork'; configuration; load. #ConfigurationOfFileSystemNetwork asClass project stableVersion load: 'Webdav' Iâve found the project of Udo, but it doesnât load on P8. I think this is due to the stream refactoring. Right now the image hung. Iâll try maybe to load it manually. But I was wondering oof there were other alternatives ? TIA, CÃ©drick

The most emblematic one for the general public emerged in 2005 under the name of âProject Natalâ taken up and democratized by Microsoft in its latest version called âAzure Kinectâ (2019). In 2012, for the first time, the team used an ultra-short focal projector to project a game board on a table. This simple change induced radically different behaviors of the actors allowing them to interact more naturally with computer simulations. In addition, the spatial configuration of the actors favors social interactions.Â But until today, manual input by the facilitator of the decisions taken by the players remains necessary, which reduces the fluidity and spontaneity of interactions. Communication between different images

Hi, I'm rearchitecting a web app to perform updates only when necessary (instead of computing them all the time) on each request, I can have a global announcer and subscribers to know when to update within an image, but is there a way to have something like that but for inter-image coordination? I'd only need to communicate the id and the class name (or a similar identifier), so on other images they'll update accordingly, and if there is an update in one image, it will notify the other images. The common data is on the database, so this is just to avoid re-reading a lot of things. Is a message queue a good fit for this? Pub/Sub? What is available in Pharo that works without having to set up a lot of things? Thanks! Esteban A. Maringolo

Hi! Does Pharo use the Regex11 package? If yes, has it already diverged from the version shipped with VisualWorks? The reason I am asking is that I just pushed an update to the public store. It addresses a bug that prevented $[ to be used in a character class. For details, see the excerpt below. Furthermore, you might have an opinion on allowing more escape sequences in character classes, don't you? I agree with the idea to allow backslash escaping in character classes too, with the default being that backslash followed by any character is parsed as that character. I also like the idea of allowing more backslash escaping in character classes. However, I still have the bad feeling that this might change the semantics of existing code. Hence, I refrained from implementing this right away until I am more confident that this does not break other peoples stuff. Currently only a few explicitly defined backslash escapes are recognized, forcing the user to remember whether a given character can be used as-is in a given context, or must be escaped. A couple of gotchas (probably not applicable in a character set?): \< an empty string at the beginning of a word \> an empty string at the end of a word Thanks, I'll keep them in mind and consider them when I decide to implement the changes. OT: I also noticed that repetition, e.g. '.{5}' behaves strange. For instance, '.{{5}}' should match 'a{{{{{}' but it doesn't. Has anyone an opinion on that one? SerialPort hangs image in combination with Raspberry Pico (Windows)

I have the following strange situation, where SerialPort>>nextPutAll: hangs when sending to a COM port that is (USB) connected to a Raspberry Pico (RP2040). The Pico contains a simple program (sketch) that echoes all input on it USB-serial port. This is written with the Arduino IDE. The echo function works OK with the Arduino Serial monitor, PuTTY and a simple Python progran. When I put the same echo program on another Arduino board (e.g. Uno or Adafruit Feather) Pharo's SerialPort does work fine. I have tested with 32 and 64 bits versions of Pharo 5, 7 and 8. All on Windows; on Raspbian there is no problem. So, there is something peculiar with the combination of the SerialPlugin and the USBserial implementation on the Pico (which uses TinyUSB), but I am at a loss as to where to search. Maybe somebody has a hint. I have seen problems with the Serial Plugin in the past. I ran into this when developing a driver for the Raspberry Pico, where the Pico runs the picod daemon (http://abyz.me.uk/picod/index.html) This code is in https://github.com/robvanlopik/picod-pharo and does not work on Windows. Is there an easy way to cherry pick methods from another branch in iceberg?

Hi guys - while I mostly get along with Iceberg and can do common stuff - there are still a few things that I'm not sure on the best way to work. A recent one, was that I created a branch for an experiment - decided not to use and then went back to master to try again. However if I want to cherry pick code (particularly a few methods) - is there nothing I can use to do this easily? I can browse the branch in the repo explorer and see diffs of methods to master - but why can't I load any of those methods (or am I missing something obvious here?) The other item that still confuses me today - how can I easily revert back to previous point in time, essentially undo work I've commited and possible pushed to my git repo. I also struggle with this one - end up with a detached head and flail around. I don't understand why this is so hard to do - and can only think its because everything is based on graphs of graphs and so there is the potential that going back in time can break this? Anyway - what is the foolproof way to go back to the older point, and then start coding so that this becomes the new Head? Pointers on these two items greatly appreciate for my road to vcs greatness (and gosh I mess Envy - as I haven't asked about showing me deleted "available methods" and "classes") Tim

UK Smalltalk User Group meeting - Wednesday June 30th

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, June 30th. Hernan Wilkinson ( https://twitter.com/HernanWilkinson ) will talk about his LiveTyping project. Currently, almost all mainstream dynamically typed languages support type annotation a la Strongtalk. Python calls it "type hints", TypeScript is JavaScript+type annotations, PHP calls it "type declarations" and Ruby does it through a tool called Sorbet. All of them annotate the types in the source code and it is the programmer who must write and maintain the annotation. In all cases, it is not mandatory for the system to correctly type check for it to run. LiveTyping ( https://github.com/hernanwilkinson/LiveTyping ) is a type system proposal for Smalltalk, that seeks similar objectives but implemented in a different way. First, it is the environment itself that collects and maintains the types based on the execution of the system, not the programmer. Second, the types are not interleaved in the source code, thus maintaining the syntax and simplicity of the language. And finally, the main objective is not to carry out a static type checking (although it supports it), but to augment the programmers experience increasing the usability of current tools such as searching for senders and implementers, and performing more accurate and safe refactorings. In this talk Hernan will briefly show how LiveTyping is implemented to later concentrate on the improvements made to the tools and the benefits it brings when developing software with Smalltalk. LiveTyping is currently implemented in Cuis Smalltalk ( https://cuis-smalltalk.org/ ) and has been successfully used for the last two years in three different universities in Argentina when teaching Object Oriented Programming and Design. Zn and AWS - retrieving object versions?

Hi everyone - Iâm wondering if someone knows the trick to listing object versions in AWS S3? I was previously using a non-Zn library (there are a few around - but they are quite old and Iâm not sure how much they are maintained) - however I hadnât realised that Zn actually supports S3 until I read it a bit carefully and realised that I needed to load an extra AWS group. So - I have a bucket that is versioned, and I wanted to read the versions of an object - and hopefully be able to read the contents of an older version. I can list the contents of a bucket, but when I try to read the versions of an object - I get a forbidden error - which when I dig deeper gives a stranger explanation? I have confirmed that the AWS CLI is able to list versions in that bucket - so Iâm a bit confused what the issue might be? Rounding in Floats

Hi, Continuing with my issues with decimals, I'm having one issue that is not clear to me why it happens. If I do: (9.1 + (-2.0)) roundTo: 0.1. "7.1000000000000005" I expect to get a single decimal Float (rounded with whatever precision, but a single decimal). Even if I do something like this: 7.1 roundTo: 0.1 It gives the wrong result. In VW and VAST it provides the right result. (9.1 + (-2.0)) roundTo: 0.1 "7.1" In Dolphin it also returns the wrong result, it seems to use the same algorithm to round it. Is this a bug? Esteban A. Problem installing 9.0 on MacMini M1

Hi everyone. It is your favourite newbie speaking :-) I have now got a new M1 MacMini which I want to configure up as a server for my Seaside apps. So far, I have found that the Mac mini doesnât have wget or brew installed! I have sorted wget but not brew. Secondly, I have transferred all of my 9.0 stuff across but when I try and execute both paharo-ui or pharo (as terminal scripts) they both fail as they say that the âPaharoâ is damaged and canât be opened. You should move it to the bin. I can open Pharo 9.0 directly but it tells me that the VM is too old for this image. Can anyone help me please? (In words that I can understand:-) David

I'm porting a little Morphic geometry program from Morphic to a Spec 2 application using GTK. I need to draw a shape in an SpAthensPresenter but to draw it I need to know the current dimensions (extent) of the presenter so it can still work OK even when the window is resized. The old Morphic version also used An Athens canvas but I had no problem then as a morph has an extent method that provides this information. But now that I can't use a morph I find that the extent method of an SpPresenter always seems to answer nil. Is that right? How d you get the current size of a presenter? Is it a bug? I'm using a very recent Pharo 9 image and headless VM on Linux. There is now an ODBC framework for Pharo, available at the pharo-rdbms github site: https://github.com/pharo-rdbms/Pharo-ODBC <https://github.com/pharo-rdbms/Pharo-ODBC> This is based on the Dolphin Smalltalk Database Connection ODBC framework. Provided a suitable driver manager is installed this should work on MacOS and Linux in addition to Windows. What's the best way to debug whether an external library is being loaded or not with UFFI ? I can't tell if it is or not, and nothing is showing up in the pharodebug.log. It's being loaded with the unix64LibraryName method. Thanks

I am obviously out of the loop when it comes to all of this repository stuff. So, I have imported my 8.0 code into 9.0 but I canât add an extension method to ScaledDecimal because a repository is missing. I check what to do and get sent to Iceberg. Somehow, as a newbie, I am supposed to understand how iceberg works but, being a 76 year old VAST Smalltalker, I donât. Surely, when I install 9.0, qashouldnât I get everything I need for a basic image? What do I do next. Attached is a screenshot of Iceberg. David

Image crashed on Parallels
