Dear all, I'm thinking about implementing a software solution in Pharo (as one of the candidate environments), it's a project that I'm dealing with professionally. The goal is to develop a financial planning/simulation application on the country level, which is at present developed as a set of interrelated Excel spreadsheets. The requirement is that the solution should be more "manageable", resilient and straightforward than Excel permits, that it should present a workflow to the user - i.e. , that the tasks the user should do are suggested through the GUI. The majority of the data is in a form of a time series (for instance: GDP for a series of years). There are many variables in the model which shoud be calculated from other variables, year by year. There are also lagged variables (the value for the current year depends from the value of previous year), and running averages. There are also some variables which are not time series (parameters). As a part of GUI, there is a need to present the results as diagrams, too (scatterplots, line charts), otherwise tables are the output. I found Pharo to be a very elegant language and environment, with version 8.0 it became pretty stable, however I don't have any experiences in building software solutions of this type in Smalltalk. In other words, I'd like to be more confident in setting the architecture, both in the sense of the model content (variables interrelation) and the architecture of classes. Besides, for the calculated variables I'd like to have a relatively simple syntax to define them (like 'GDPpC <- GDP / Population'). My thoughts and questions: - for easier maintenance I'd like to separate the data from the code - so the question is what would be the best way to implement persistence (another Pharo image - with what?, some relational database, XML/JSON, flat files ...) - I wonder what would be the best "architecture" of classes - so, we have a lot of aggregate variables like GDP and population, which can be grouped at least according to the stage in the planning workflow. There are also resulting (calculated) variables (e.g. GDP per capita). On the other hand, since this is a planning software, it's a kind of simulation, where we have a "data warehouse", experiments and results - As a core packages I would use Spec2, Roassal, and PolyMath. I'm just thinking aloud, and would greatly appreciate any thoughts from experienced Pharoers :-) Best wishes, Tomaz

Hi Stef, Iâve done some workshops and screencasts. In the workshops (oops, already a few years ago) I used a morph that was moving on the screen to emphasize the liveness. The BabyMock2 work by Attila Magyar is also great for that. It also is good to show the difference between Chicago and London style TDD, and connect to BDD. Loading Seaside and Magritte in Pharo8 - baseline load conflicts

Hello everyone, so I canât resolve the problem in my project, which emerged when something happened in one of those repositories (it was working fine previously). When I try to load the project using metacello Metacello new baseline: #NewWave; repository: 'github://skaplar/NewWave:development'; load. Problem downloading images

Hello, I am having problem downloading new images through PharoLauncher, it's very slow and around 20% download it tells "ConnectionTimedOut: Data Receive time out". Full stacktrace is below. Actually, I couldn't download the new version of PharoLauncher too, it is very slow and then it fails. Is there some problem or maintenance in the servers? Hi Renaud, your code is also based on the orginal version of Jochen Rick. Jochens code always worked but unfortunately had only a few tests and was codewise hard to understand. Dont know if you just moved or also refactored and extended it. I also once started with a clean reimplementation (also based on Jochens code but also checked barcode code from Java/JavScript) - mainly to understand the algorithms. I also did not want to limit to QR but also other barcode, includes proper packaging and more tests. Result is here: https://github.com/astares/Pharo-Barcode including also EAN8/EAN13 barcodes. Had to put it aside for time reasons - but maybe this could be the base for a full and clean barcode library for Pharo. I can move it to a community hosted location if more people want to join. Problem switching from PetitParser to PetitParser2

Hello I have been switching part of a package called TextLint so that it uses PetitParser2 as the parsing engine. For the most part it went fairly smoothly, but I have one problem which occurs in many places. The original parse rules had many conditional matching rules based on PPPredicateObjectParser. I have changed this to PP2PredicateObjectNode, using the same block as a predicate in each case. All of them fail when I test run them in a playground; in every case the error message is of the form: 'Character does not understand [some condition testing method]'. The condition being tested is meaningless for a character - it applies to a token produced by some earlier parsing. Looking at the code for PP2PredicateObjectNode>>#predicate:, I see that the predicate is always treated as a PP2CharSetPredicate, which is claimed to be a performance optimization. The error messages I have seen come from the initialization of this, setting up the 255 precomputed results, because they all relate to a character with asciiValue = 1. All these rules worked in PetitParser, because the methods for PPPredicateObjectParser allow one to distinguish between a character set predicate and a general block; in fact, the class side contains a large variety of methods for generating conditions. As far as I can see, PP2PredicateObjectNode allows only one type of condition. Have I misunderstood - is there some way to specify the condition is not a character set?
