[ANN] Introspect web content (Soup with some GT extensions)

Hi, I added a few GT inspector extensions to Soup and cleaned up a little bit. Released as a new version 1.8 of Soup - you will find easily in Catalog for Pharo 5 or by opening Spotter and entering "Soup" to load. As the attached screenshots shows you now have a nice way to introspect the structure of a web page as a tree in the inspector or see the attributes of tags/nodes in a table. Thx T.

Porting to Solaris 11

I'm currently porting the Pharo VM to Solaris 11 for a specific project (Sparc and x86). I was wondering how many users prefer the stack VM, as for my own purposes the JIT is better (better concurrency when not using OS functions on a 128 thread machine, which is the deployment target). Hi - I don't think I'll be changing the settings for format as you read wrapping line number or reading the cursor position/line number ever. Is there a way to remove that section from the nautilus code pane? Thanks Paul

The myth of a small deployment image using metacello

I have a seaside project that will be installed in a typical fashion headless on a server somewhere on the net. The project is in its final stage so I started to care about the size of the image. Or better: The size of the image is not my main concern but the number of packages installed. The less packages you load the better it is, it is that simple. This time I encountered a problem that I often see but this particular one explains in a very good way that how we use metacello can be improved. In my project I load only Seaside-Core. This has the advantage of loading far less packages and I don't have the need to remove a bunch of registered web applications that registered themselves when being loaded. I make use of a bootstrap template bought somewhere on the net. I use magritte a lot so I was happy to see that there is a package called BootstrapMagritte. The package extends some magritte ui classes and overwrites some methods to add specific classes to HTML tags. Basically not very much code. I load a little extensions to my web application and end up loading _all_ of seaside which loads beach parasol (a ui testing framework), _all_ of magritte which in turn loads glamour packages (a ui toolkit). So at this point I think WTF? Why does this happen? Because the "default" group in many projects contains all of the packages and dependencies of the project. I thought at first this is wrong but in the meantime I think it is right. Whenever a configuration is loaded without additional parameters the "default" group gets loaded. This is the best scenario for newcomers (e.g. using the catalog to load). They don't know better but want to see what the package has to offer. Fine, we should support that. For managing projects this gets annoying really quick like you can see above. It would always load all dependencies and all packages of every project that your own project depends. This is a no-go. To circumvent this a lot of people add a "core" group to their configurations (loading the essential parts). This is great because in my own project I can add a dependency to a project and load only the "core" group. This works if the dependency chain is not very long (at best it works in depth 1 ;) ). As soon as a project has two interesting groups the problem gets worse. A good example is magritte. It is useful for describing your model as well as it contains useful seaside components. The moment I add a dependency from my model package to magritte seaside I know it is wrong. I find myself sometimes duplicating dependencies just to mitigate the effect. I do something like project: 'Magritte3Seaside' with: [ spec className: #ConfigurationOfMagritte3; versionString: #'stable'; loads: #('Seaside' ); repository: 'http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/Magritte/Magritte3/main/' ]; project: 'Magritte3Core' with: [ spec className: #ConfigurationOfMagritte3; versionString: #'stable'; loads: #('Core' ); repository: 'http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/Magritte/Magritte3/main/' ]; andâ¦ package: #'MyProject-Model-Core' with: [ spec requires: #( 'Magritte3Core' ). ]; package: #'MyProject-UI-Core' with: [ spec requires: #( 'Seaside3' 'Magritte3Seaside' 'BootstrapMagritte' ). ]; just to be able to put the right dependencies. But this way is cumbersome to do and not support by tools like Versionner. The main problem to me is that the maintainer of the configuration defines the granularity of pieces to load forcing me to do stupid workarounds to achieve what I want. To me the problem is that the separation is not done properly. I think the logic of having loads() in the baseline and a pure string like "Magritte3Core" in the dependency spec is reversed. It should be project: 'Magritte3' with: [ spec className: #ConfigurationOfMagritte3; versionString: #'stable'; repository: 'http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/Magritte/Magritte3/main/' ]; andâ¦ package: #'MyProject-Model-Core' with: [ spec requires: #( 'Magritte3:Core' ). ]; package: #'MyProject-UI-Core' with: [ spec requires: #( 'Seaside3' 'Magritte3:Seaside' 'BootstrapMagritte' ). ]; Note the "Magritte3:Core" in the dependency spec. The meaning is that there is a dependency to Magritte3 and group Core. This way dependencies can be properly aligned. Or are there other way to deal with it? What do you think? Norbert

IIS and Pharo web service solutions

Hello! 1)--------------------- I've successfully worked out how to operate Pharo / Seaside web services behind IIS on Windows Server 2008 (R2) but maybe works on later editions as well. I could summarize it in a "HOWTO" if there is interest or even post it to include in a documentation. (Pharo as a service on Windows, IIS modules to install, how to make it and how to configure proxy / url rewrite) 2)--------------------- Since failed finding an usable binary for nginx uploader module on windows I worked out a method (not really a piece of software) how to use NeatUpload (.NET solution) together with Pharo/Seaside to receive hundreds of megabytes of uploads on Windows servers. If there is interest I'm also ready to document and post it here or somewhere. Please sign any interest here or in private email and then I'll create the docs. Generating custom classes based on attributes from XML Document

I have a XML like this <packagedElement xmi:type="uml:Class" xmi:id="EAID_4A" name="DCEdge" isAbstract="true">  </packagedElement> <packagedElement xmi:type="uml:Association" xmi:id="EAID_46">  </packagedElement> and I would like to generate UmlClass and UmlAssociation classes for this. I could use XMLPluggableElementFactory, however that only allows me to specify the target class only on the element's name, such as doc := (XMLDOMParser on: someXML) nodeFactory: (XMLPluggableElementFactory new elementClass: GenericElement; handleElement: 'packagedElement' withClass: UmlPackagedElement) parseDocument. However I need better granularity, because I would like to have a different class for 'packagedElement[xmi:type="uml:Class"]' and different class for 'packagedElement[xmi:type="uml:Association"]'. Of course I could use double visitors (so use the Pluggable stuff to get UmlPackagedElement) and then make another pass on it to get the final classes, however I would prefer to have to wanted class directly without the need to go through intermediate representation. Mea Culpa

Okay, so far, I've made two mistakes. First was my lack of sensitivity to cultural differences around the world. Now that I know better, I shall do better. Second was my failure to distinguish between different subgroups within the Pharo forum. The reason I chose Pharo forum to discuss my campaign was the fact that it is the most active Smalltalk forum there is. People who are interested in Smalltalk join the most active forum generally, and this includes not only Pharoers, but people from ESUG, Squeak, Cincom, Amber, Redline, etc. So, for example, when I appealed for contributors to the Redline project, I should've distinguished the target audience as those groups other than Pharoers. This was my failure and I own up to it. It is unfortunate that I must use the Pharo forum for this purpose. The Smalltalk community is so terribly fragmented that there is no universal Smalltalk forum to address, at least, none that is actually *inhabited*. Without the ability to address the largest number of Smalltalkers, the SRP cannot make any progress. I'm sorry, but I have to be blunt. If anyone can offer a practical alternative, I'd like to hear it. Otherwise, the SRP has only two choices: 1) Continue what it is doing on the Pharo forum, and be mindful of which group(s) I am addressing. 2) Fold up the campaign and leave the destiny of Smalltalk to the Fates. Without the ability to reach out to Smalltalkers everywhere, I am hopelessly disadvantaged. Messages interceptions without using "halt"

Hello, i am not new to Pharo nor to the list but this is the first time i speak here, so : hi =) I started a phd a few month ago (with Alain Plantec) on context oriented programming and dynamic programs adaptation. I am using Pharo for my experiments and i would like to intercept messages sent to an object just before they get to their receiver. To be more specific, when #msg is sent to an object o, i want to be able to intercept it just before it is actually executed with the following objects at my disposal : the receiver (o), the message or selector, the sender. My objective by doing that is to (try to) change the lookup for a given method, and to be able to choose in which class the lookup will start. I have been looking a bit and it does not seem to be a "simple" way to do that in Pharo. Is that even possible and if so, any advice on where i should look ? Thanks, Steven.
