Hello, In Pharo 5.0 #50680 MessageDialogWindow new open displays a message box with no text. Should (MessageDialogWindow new text: 'Hello') open work? I get a stack trace on CompositionScanner if I try to set the text. Also, is there a way to display the dialog modally (relative to your application)? Thank you, Rob

finding Pharo Launcher

where can you get a ready to run Pharo Launcher from (I am interested in OSX but other OSes should be answered as well). I would like a Pharo 5 64 bit one to try but I can understand only a Pharo 4 one being advertised. I looked on the Pharo Downloads page <http://pharo.org/download> and could not find it. Googling just gives announcements of it and old messages for email lists. and latest is <https://pharoweekly.wordpress.com/2016/01/15/pharo-launcher-spur-and-prespu…> which gives the Smalltalk Hub link which is not much help to getting started I suspect it just needs a small edit to the downloads page to make it findable for me but if it is to be used as an entry point then perhaps it need to be made more obvious on the pharo.org pages. -- Thanks Mark

Welcome back ;) >but I cannot seem to create a HELP|ABOUT dialog Note that in Pharo 5 I changed the about box to be implemented in "AboutDialogWindow" (a subclass of LongMessageDialogWindow) to make this more explicit and more easy to find. if you already work with Pharo 5 (which will be ready in a few days) check the method: AboutDialogWindow openForPharo Also note that one can search by opening Spotter. Solution: ODBC - could not coerce arguments

Hi All, Just for the records, I've found the answer finally on my previous question. YES it was an encoding problem. It is your responsibility to know how your ODBC link (in ODBC administrator) is configured and what encoding it is waiting for. All strings must be passed for the ODBC classes correctly encoded. In my example it was CP1250. *encodedquery := yourquery* *encodeWith: (ZnByteEncoder newForEncoding: 'cp1250').* (Yes, Zn... classes are present as I'm making it for web) It results in a ByteArray but don't worry, ODBC system accepts it in *execute:* and maybe its other messages as well. I'm facing a problem with ODBC which may be related with character encoding. >From the debugger, it is: *'Could not coerce arguments'* , error message is caught here: externalCallFailed "Raise an error after a failed call to an external function" | errCode | errCode := ExternalFunction getLastError. "this allows us to look at the actual error code" ^self error: (ExternalFunction errorMessageFor: errCode). The SQL command is (runs well in SQL Server manager): update gcp_users SET user_name='VERGA VeszprÃ©mi ErdÅgazdasÃ¡g Zrt.', user_name2='', user_city='8200 VeszprÃ©m', user_custom_1='88-591-545*', user_profession='Jutasi u. 10.' WHERE user_email='molnar(a)drfrohlich.hu' AND user_custom_2='0524' The sql statement above is copied from the debugger as well, caught here: sqlExecDirect: queryString connection checkSQLReturn: (ODBCLibrary default sqlExecDirect: handle statement: queryString length: queryString size ) statement: handle. being as the querystring, class *WideString* (!?). I'm trying also to convert it to CP1250 (which has all the characters I need, actually data comes from a CP1250 txt file and converts well into pharo system) but it also results in a WideString object.. Example: (CP1250TextConverter new convertFromSystemString: 'Å±Ã¡ÅÃ') --> shows WideString in debugger. I think CP1250 should result in a ByteString... Is this the problem (could not coerce arguments). thanks Robert

How to determine if a file is hidden

Hello, Is there a way to determine if a file is hidden? I couldn't find that in "Deep into Pharo". For example, I can get my desktop files with: desktopFiles := FileLocator desktop children. And now I would like to filter that collection to the non-hiddent files with something like: desktopFiles select: [:each | each isHidden not ] But there doesn't seem to be anything like "isHidden" for a FileLocator object. Nesting Builders in Roassal

Hello, I am working with Roassal and trying to write a cell-layout builder that uses RTPieBuilders internally as its nested objects. The nesting docs cover nesting RT elements, but not builders. The composition docs cover composing builders, but not nesting them. I have a partial solution, but it is getting increasingly hacky, to the point where it may be easier to just duplicate the piebuilder code in my builder. Before I go down that road, I wanted to check if there was a more natural way to nest builders. Below is a mashup of the Roassal Examples Nesting and Pie Chart builders that gives the basic flavor of what I am trying to accomplish. Notice that I am creating new PieBuilders every time, running them, and extracting their createdElements for my layout. This works well enough, but if I then want to normalize global properties so that all pie slices with the same property get the same color, I have no way to coordinate the newly generated PieBuilders, as each possesses its own normalizer. Likewise, if I have a global PieBuilder, its internal state gets trampled with each iteration. I figured there was likely an easy way to compose builders that I didn't know about, so I thought I would ask. | v es b | v := RTView new. es := RTEllipse elementsOn: RTShape withAllSubclasses. v addAll: es. FFI return by reference

Hi again, Does anyone know what is the state of return by reference in FFI? Example: glGetAttribute: attr into: value <primitive: #primitiveNativeCall module: #NativeBoostPlugin error: errorCode> ^ self nbCall: #( int SDL_GL_GetAttribute(SDL_GLattr attr, int *value) ) On my image (50666) it does nothing on value yet (if nil, remains nil, if SmallInteger 0, remains 0). (SDL2 glGetAttribute: 6 into: value) should return 16. I've seen NBOpenGL put "out" before value in method header, should it matter? (does not make it work though) Last but not least, should we attach '*' to the type or variable for FFI to understand it is a pointer? Cheers, Thibault Raffaillac

Passing nil with FFI

Hi, I am having trouble passing nil to a function with FFI (i.e. NULL, i.e. 0). For example: SDL2 glCreateContext: nil. The function expects a subclass of FFIExternalObject, so calls instVarAt: 1 but nil has no such field! Am I missing something?
