Glamour Tabs not updated when update is called

Hi Al Not sure if this is a bug, but here goes. Looking through the Glamour examples in Pharo4 I come across the Updateable Browser example. This example has a line that, when the collection is greater than 1, shows a list tab, the title of which is List, col size printString. This indeed comes up and shows: 'List: 2' but if you continue to add, it doesn't change. The text will change but not the title. I came across this when I couldn't get my browser to add tabs, even though entity gets updated. Announcments vs Events schism

Hi, is there a good reason why not just rename Announcement to Event since everyone is calling it that anyways? Everybody (almost irrespective of language) understands what an event, whilst Announcement is a new vocabulary. Most people when subclassing will anyways do Announcement subclass: MyEvent and so forth. Is there a benefit in naming it Announcement? Doesn't it just add more confusion? For example Bloc has Announcement subclass: #BlAbstractEvent and Announcement subclass: #BlMorphAnnouncement whilst Event is clearly favored. BlMorphAnnouncement allSubclasses size. "5" BlAbstractEvent allSubclasses size. "60" (Why does Bloc has this separation anyways?) Peter

Using geographic data

Hi All, I would like to get some advice regarding which path I should take. Problem: Given a coordinate I want to know to which geographical object it belongs to. Path 1 Using Glorp to make a query to a Postgis instance containing the boundaries of the geobjects Path 2 Use the data form GADM data (according to this thread <http://forum.world.st/PostGIS-in-Pharo-td4802233.html>). I would avoid path 1 in order to avoid installation of postgi. From the thread mentioned above, I thing that it requires some development. Regarding Path 2, I don't see which framework or library should I use to import and query the data contained in the KMZ from GADM. Any advice is welcome. Best regards. Art

NativeBoost and variadic functions

Hello, Is it possible with NativeBoost to create a binding for a variadic function ? I've seen the printf example in NBCPrinter but this implementation is kind of cheating since it always pass just a %s as format and one already formatted string to the C function. I've written a simple variadic function which adds every integer it receives as argument (first argument is for the number of following arguments) : int add(int number,...); In Pharo I've tried something like this : *add: *number *arg1: *first *arg2: *second > <primitive: #primitiveNativeCall module: #NativeBoostPlugin> > > ^ self nbCall: #( int add (int number, int first, int second)) > module: 'libMyLib.so' > and it works fine with two arguments. Basically, doing so, I would need one method per number of arguments so it's not very cool. A Morphic ScrumBoard, part 4: Other planning boards

Pharo is an excellent environment for building interactive applications. In part 4 of this series, I take a look at a planning tool for time slot based planning. This is not so common in software development, but is used a lot in simple and complicated contexts. In the example, there are 4 rooms that can be scheduled between 8:00 and 18:00 at a granularity of 5 minutes. An element panel is added as a new kind of drag panel containing prototypes of the tasks that can be planned. Here the prototypes are no longer the squares from the earlier drag panels, their height depends on the amount of time they take. Personal wiki / information manager

Hello. Is there any software projects/libraries for personal wiki (something like ZIM or CherryTree or Orgmode for writing texts/notes) and personal information managing in Pharo? I think that Pharo would be great for this kind of software, because it would provide rich scripting options. Also the idea of representing informations as objects is really great. For example; now I keep list of books I read in DSV file. With this SW, I could have a list of objects representing the books, which could be sorted or rendered to lower level protocols, like DSV/XML/whatever. Ephemeric Cloud - new platform to publish Pharo web applications

Dear Pharo users, I'm so excited to introduce you a project I'm currently working on which is called "Ephemeric cloud". It is a very simple and fast way to publish your Images to the web. Basically to publish a Smalltalk Image you just need to call a usual HTTP POST request to Pharocloud Ephemeric API and you'll get a hostname in response. For instance, I can imagine some kind of "Publish" button on Marina project site, clicking on which a user will spawn a new instance in the cloud and will be able to test it immediately. Or you can have an A-B publish scheme when a part of users are sent to a new version for a test and the rest to a stable one. saving text files from inspector

Hi, it seems that I cannot save text files from inspector, only if they are smalltalk (.st) files, in which case a different text editor tab (Script, instead of Contents) is opened up. Is this an oversight or an intention? Thanks, Peter

Class side vs instance side

Hi, I am trying to figure out where to best place some mapping/data/stable methods. For example imagine method ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MyRectangle>>oppositeSides ^ { #top -> #bottom. #bottom -> #top. #topLeft -> #bottomRight .... } asDictionary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And then the class might have some other related methods such as ~~~~~~~~~~~ MyRectangle>>oppositeSideFor: aSide ^ self oppositeSides at: aSide ~~~~~~~~~~~~ So it's a method returning a mapping between opposite sides/corners and thus is really not going to change. Now I could place this in instance-side and create a new instance every time I wanted to use it (which doesn't seem practical), or I could put it in class-side. The problem I have with class-side is that naming is more like going through minefield (more than once I corrupted my image by naming a method or variable something I shouldn't have), and for whatever reason it feels like either metaprogramming or procedural programmming... That class side methods are pretty much global functions/variables... and short of constructors I am avoiding static methods even in other languages... but maybe using it is ok. Or maybe have it object an use singleton? The only oop-like approach I see would be to extend symbols (#top oppositeSide), or have separate objects for sides, but that seems like overkill. MySide subclass: #Top Top>>oppositeSide ^ Bottom new Are there any best practices regarding this? This is also true for actual data stored in methods/attributes (such as icons). P.s.: For english natives... Should the second method be ned "oppositeSideOf:" or "oppositeSideFor:"? Any ideas/pointers appreciated, Peter

deprecating classes

Hi, is there a mechanism for deprecating whole classes? For example there's class RTResizEable that has been replaced by RTResizable (without extra "e") class. But if I don't want to break people's code I would like to tell them that they should use something else. I could mark every method with "self deprecated:" but that's a bit tedious... And doing it with a script (rewritting all methods to add the statement) is dangerous, because it can be part of UI loop, so it will blow up the image with warnings. An idea might be to instead of opening Warning dialog with debug... to create a "Deprecations Browser" (which has only one instance so if you attempt to open it again while it is still opened nothing will happen). And in the Deprecations Browser would be list of triggered deprecations... maybe something like "Announcements tab" in Announcer inspector... That way even deprecations in UI loops will just add a hundred rows to a single window instead of opening hundred windows. (And there would be also opportunity for not showing duplicates.) You get a debugger at the position if the halt in the code. Meaning the exception block run more than once. And it would run forever. Norbert, Sorry if this is a stupid question: what does the debugger say? I mean, assuming NotFound is an Exception, I'd expect a debugger showing a NotFound Error...
