My problem was that I chose a 64-bit Ubuntu OS when I signed up with the ISP, Digital Ocean. So I started another Droplet at DO and set it up with an Ubuntu 32-bit system. All is well now and everything down to the end of sec. 12 in Sven's tutorial works for me. Now I'll look at Deploying For Production. Many thanks to Sven and Damien for their comments, and to Sven for his fascinating tutorial. Bruce

How to add a keyboard shortcut to Rubric?

Hi all, I am trying to add a keyboard shortcut to a RubTextEditor. I have tried different ways but nothing seems to work. I have even tried modifying buildShortcutsOn: at class side to include the extra shortcut but it does not have any effect at all. Ideally Iâd take an existing instance and add the keyboard shortcut there, but if that is impossible Iâm willing to make a subclass just to get this extra shortcut. I worked my way through Sven van Caekenberghe's excellent tutorial on building and deploying a web app on Digital Ocean's cloud server. All went well at first, even though Digital Ocean didn't offer a Mac option (I picked Ubuntu Linux). I skipped the Tests and Configuration parts of Sven's tutorial in order to get to the deployment part faster. I thought I could come back to those parts. I was able to get SSH command line access to the new server and loaded Pharo using curl (See Sven's Section 12.3). But when I went to test the setup using # ./pharo Pharo.image printVersion I got an error saying pharo not found even though it was there in the pharo-vm directory. I suspect that my attempt to do all this on an Apple iMac is the problem. Has anyone else tried using a Mac with Digital Ocean?

Would smart variable ordering improve performance?

Hi! It is known that increasing data locality is a good way to benefit from CPU caches. There has been some effort from the IBMâs JVM crew that aligns some frequently accessed variables at a particular offset to improve accesses. Would this approach works in Pharo? Other similar situation: will the expression âObject new yourselfâ be faster if the object (i.e., result of Object new) is physically close to the class Object in memory? Does anyone use Garage with an oracle database? Maybe someone that develops on Mac OS? I would be interested in the best way to compile and install libraries in order to use it from pharo. Norbert

Pharo family update

Hello, I just updated drawing of projects around Pharo. Main idea is to guide people (new users of Pharo) through fields of interests - something they might be looking for. I choose these 10 fields devided into some specific subjects. Somewhere it is too detailed, while elsewhere it is too fuzzy - it is just showing image of Pharo I have in my mind. It should help people to: - identify important classes in Pharo, - select right project, - understand what is application, tool or framework, - see what is allready inside main Pharo image. I would like to add links pointing to part of books or to videos where specific projects are used. And maybe a star symbol for very important or enterprise ready projects. As You can see I left few subjects empty. Maybe someone can help me fill this. But I will be happy for any type of correction - changing fields of interest, subjects, adding/removing projects etc... I prepared textual version on github - but right now it is not coherent with the drawing (I will correct this if needed). Adam.

[ANN] Mathex 0.3 is out! How hard would it be to give the possibility to use it with Pillar?

Hi all, I just released Mathex 0.3, you can look at the release note here [1] if you want. :) I wonder how hard it would be to give the possibility to write Mathex directly inside Pillar? Mathex provide pdf/png generation under Linux, so it is possible to create images for non-LaTeX Pillar's exportation. First of all thanks to all the people helping with the documentation. Now I think its the time to replace the old PBE with UPBE , we dont need to change the website just link to the newest pdf here https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/view/Books/job/UpdatedPharoByExample… Because UPBE at this moment is light years ahead of PBE. I just added doc for Spotter, Dark Theme, and the new Nautilus icons. If any of you wants to fix something on UPBE and does not have the confidence to do it directly , because you dont understand Pillar or you dont feel confident yet with Pharo you can still help me tremendously by adding your comment , your corrected text or your addition documentation as github issue here and I will put it in the book ASAP. https://github.com/SquareBracketAssociates/UpdatedPharoByExample/issues I will be resolving at least one issue per week from now on to make sure that UPBE is being pushed forward and remains by far the most up to date documentation of Pharo anywhere in this universe. But I cannot guarantee for other universes. So please help , even a tiny bit of help is great because we can all make Pharo far easier for newcomers with much better documentation and expand UPBE to every direction. All hail Pharo !
