The International Workshop on Smalltalk Technologies, is a European Smalltalk User Group (ESUG) Conference joint event, that focuses on research activities - namely academic creative work undertaken on smalltalk use, and more generally on object technologies. IWST was launched in 2009, in Brest, during the 17th ESUG Conference. The second edition took place in Barcelona, and the third edition was held in 2011 at the heart of historic Edinburgh. Next edition will be in Gent, Begium this summer (28th of august). ESUG gathers groups of professionals and hobbyists who share an interest in the Smalltalk programming languages and related technologies. The goal of the workshop is to create a forum around advances or experience in Smalltalk. IWST contributes to triggering discussions and exchanges of ideas. As always, we make a point to have a very constructive paper review process that aims to provide in-depth comments and suggestions to all of them (no one-liners!) This makes it ideal to disseminate new research directions, and is a good venue for early stage PhD students to receive feedback on their work. splitter how to?

Hello, I would like to add a Morph with a splitter in the DrGeo window. So far I am using LayoutFrame with fixed pixel offset to adjust the various components of a DrGeo window (see code below) Now I don't understand how I can hide the rightPanel morph, and get the area morph to take the whole horizontal extent. Message hideLeftOrTop only hide the morph but do not change the layout of remaining visible morph I can hand change the layout but I wonder if there are any proporer way to do it? All in all, I would like to simulate a collapse function in the splitter. SystemWindow model methods

Hi, I'm following the Basic Widgets tutorial in Pharo By Example 2. I see a couple of neat ways you can control the SystemWindow by passing it a model. How can I find out in the image all the different things I can control this way? The tutorial shows initial extent, whether the window can be closed and the menu items. dirty hack question

Hi, i looked at a method in a package i downloaded that goes essentially like this: method:aCollection aCollection do:[:i| i satisfiesTest ifTrue[^someNumberDependingOnI] ]. ^someOtherNumberDependingOnACollection now theoretically some 'i' should always satisfy test, the ^someOtherNumber was obviously added because there is a bug in satisfiesTest and this way the bug is hardly noticable any more (its not important for my question, but someOtherNumber is perfectly logical in the general setting, if one does not understand the bug itself). i changed satisfiesTest so that there should be no more bugs in it. of course i cant be sure, hence i changed the ^someOtherNumber line to: self error:'should never be reached'. now i wonder whether that last error line would be considered a dirty hack by the usual smalltalk programmer, and if yes, what would be the usual procedure in such a case? werner

Hi there, I've seen some people using a shared package cache to avoid downloading package that were already used. Is this a preference somewhere or do you set manually: MCCacheRepository default: (aFileDirectory somewhere) ? Cheers, Francois

SystemWindow initial labelling from model

A bit confused on this. You can define labelString on your model, pass an instance to SystemWindow, and it doesn't get the label. Seems you either have to send #label: to the SystemWindow instance or send #update:#relabel to pick it up. Is this by design? Am I missing something? Thanks, -- Daniel Lyons

is Trait a behavior?

Hi all I have some methods receiving either a Class or a Trait instance as parameter, so I usually call variables with names like 'aClassOrTrait'. Searching for a more synthetic name, I wonder if 'aBehavior' would be fine. But IMO these examples show contradictions: - Trait *is* a behavior: TBehaviorCategorization users ---> an IdentitySet(Class Trait) TPureBehavior users ---> an IdentitySet(TraitBehavior Behavior) (actually this makes me think 'aPureBehavior' is another alternative for my variables) - Trait is *not* a behavior: TBehaviorCategorization isBehavior ---> false TClassAndTraitDescription users ---> an IdentitySet(ClassDescription TraitDescription) (I both are behaviors, why not call it TBehaviorDescription?)
