Last pending things for Pharo 1.2
by Mariano Martinez Peck April 4, 2011

April 4, 2011

So....here is the list of things I guess are pending: 1) "Release" all configurations included in Pharo (this is, ConfigurationOfPharo and all it dependencies). I mean, we should NOT use or depend on #development versions. 2) Update the one click image to use latest cog images and "pharo prepared vms". There are some issues regarding this... 3) Write down all the things/summary done in Pharo 1.2 5) Update SystemVersion current -->> Pharo1.2rc2 of 27 January 2011 update 12340 6) Condense sources? condense changes? #cleanUpForRelease Cheers Mariano

Do we want this for Pharo 1.2 and futures?
by Mariano Martinez Peck April 4, 2011

In Pharo 1.0 and 1.1 I used to include certain files in addition to the .image and .changes. These files were: changelog.txt, installScript.st and packages.txt So...what do you think? are they (still) useful ? if true, then we should add it to hudson. If not, we just ignore it. Thanks Mariano

Cursor location in a form
by DougEdmunds April 3, 2011

April 3, 2011

I have a form with several fields (a,b,c) and a button. The button should only be enabled when the cursor is in field b. How can I tell when the cursor is in that field? builder newButtonFor: self action: #openLessonListEditor getEnabled: #hasSelectedCurrentLesson label: 'Edit current lesson' help: 'Edit current lesson'. I want #hasSelectedCurrentLesson to return true only when the cursor is in field b. -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Cursor-location-in-a-form-tp3422745p3422745.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[OT] Blog sequence "Journey through the VM"
by Mariano Martinez Peck April 2, 2011

April 2, 2011

Hi folks. I will start a sequence of VM related posts called âJourney through the VMâ, similar to what Igor did in Deep Smalltalk School<http://www.inria.fr/centre-de-recherche-inria/lille-nord-europe/agenda/smal…>. My main focus is that a regular Smalltalker, without any knowledge in VM stuff can understand the basis of it (ObjectMemory, Interpreter, etc). In addition, I expect the reader can download, change, compile, run, and debug (and why not fixing?) the VM. Later on in the journey, I would also like to talk about what the compiler does, what bytecodes are, how to read them, how they are mapped to the VM, etc. I will also show some hooks or tricks that the VM provides and that are not always known. Moreover, I will explain what a primitive is, how they are executed by the VM, how you can write your own primitives, etc. FFI and writing your own plugin are also in my plans. It is important to notice that all these posts are thought for VM newbies. I would appreciate if there can be some VM hackers paying attention that I don't say stupid things. http://marianopeck.wordpress.com/ Cheers

(you then want to store the value in a dictionary keyed by the the message name). doesNotUnderstand: aMessage | dict | dict := (#(nul soh stx etx eot enq ack bel bs tab lf) collectWithIndex: [:elem :index | elem -> index]) asDictionary. ^dict at: aMessage selector ifAbsent: [^super doesNotUnderstand: aMessage]. But of course doesNotUnderstand: is always a bit magic... and should be used with care. As for strings stiched together: yes, *horrible*. And we plan to move on to something better soon. In general, I like the idea to have a reflective model of the structure of methods... When talking about code, we should not use string... the Quasi-Quoting from Helvetia is far better than string manipulation: http://scg.unibe.ch/research/helvetia/examples#168249369 That combined with a good AST should make these things much easier.
