How to access a text entry?
by DougEdmunds April 26, 2011

April 26, 2011

I am trying to model a simple GUI from the UITheme class exampleBasicControls. In that method, there's this: 'Text Entry'->(dialog newTextEntryFor: (ValueHolder new contents: 'Hello') getText: #contents setText: #contents: help: 'This is a text entry'). which creates a textbox, with the default value of 'Hello'. How do I access what's typed into the 'Hello' area so I can use it in code? I'd like to use it this way: 1) enter something into the box. 2) when done, click a button which does something with the new value (but I don't want to close the window). For example, I type in '33' and click a button. Some code receives that value and adds 1 to it, then prints out the result 34 on the Transcript. -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/How-to-access-a-text-entry-tp3474689p3474689.html Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Hi, I want to use http://www.squeaksource.com/Z3950 Following install instructions, I've dowloaded yaz sources (I've tried 4.1.2 and 3.0.52) as it seems there's no binary for OSX, ./configure && make && make install. Metacellobrowser feedback
by Johan Fabry April 23, 2011

April 23, 2011

Hi all, I'd like to give a bit of feeback on the metacello browser. First some context: I am aware of the core concepts of configuration management, but because of lack of time I never got to learn Metacello. So I thought this browser would be ideal for me, I gave it a go, and I'd like to report on my experience. The first try did not work at all for me, because I started with a configuration that is too complex. So lets start with the second try, something simpler, and first get that sorted out before we do the complex one. Here we go: I have a SqueakSource project TraitsApplication with one package TraitsApplication which contains TraitsApplication and TraitsApplication-Tests categories (and the former contains a TraitsApplication class :-P ). Following the prompts in the browser I was able to make a configuration and save it to SqueakSource, without any real problems. So the cool thing is, I made my first Metacello config today and it even works :-) One issue is how to load my creation. I am used to a big do-it that gets the config via Gofer and contains '(Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfFoo) perform: #loadDefault'. Many configs do it like this, as a user I considered it a standard convention. But this turns out not to work, because no loadDefault has been defined. Perchance I remembered how I had to load MetacelloBrowser '(ConfigurationOfMetacelloBrowser project version: #stable) load' and adapting it to TraitsApplication (not forgetting version:#development) made it to work. So, the question: why is there no #loadDefault generated, nor an obvious way to specify what the default should be? (At least for simple cases of the configuration, like this one) The second issue is the UI. It is confusing at times, there are multiple issues and I list them in random order - Why can I not click on '+Configuration' when there is no configuration selected in the left hand side? - What do the unit-test icons at the left of the configs and baselines-versions-... mean? I turn them green by double-clicking on them, which also gets me an inspector on an empty collection. Huh? - The context menu is too big and confusing. It should be subdivided and ordered by group. Submenus are in order I think. - What are groups? The help menu does not enlighten me. Next up: making a config for AspectMaps (the first thing I tried and that did not work). But this is for another day ... -- Johan Fabry jfabry(a)dcc.uchile.cl - http://dcc.uchile.cl/~jfabry PLEIAD Lab - Computer Science Department (DCC) - University of Chile

Alexandre, I think the 'run tests' command is great idea ... Validation wil be important as long as folks edit configs by hand, so validation needs to be part of the tool set (whether automatic or manual) ... Just because people don't do it doesn't mean that they shouldn't be doing it ... it is very easy to introduce an error that won't show up until you try to use the configuration, so validation is important... I would prefer to see it automatic which then begs the question of how to notify the user that there is a validation issue and which configuration/version has the issue ... presumably we have a set of feedback options that we can use ... How to generate icons for use in Pharo?

Hi I'm trying to add a new item to the WorldMenu (figured that out from reading the excellent http://book.pharo-project.org/book/CustomizingPharo/WorldMenuRegistration chapter). Now I would like to create an icon for it. I've seen some of the comments in ThemeIcons e.g. ThemeIcons class >> crudeUndoDisabledIconContents "Private - Method generated with the content of the file /home/plantec/dvpt/Pharo/Sprint-10-09/Icons/crudeUndoDisabled.png" and was wondering how I could get my icon into that format as well. Any help would be appreciated! Also, is the specification for the size of the icon i.e. 16 x 16 from this thread <http://forum.world.st/Icon-tt2272011.html> still correct? ++ -- again
by Ted F.A. van Gaalen April 21, 2011

April 21, 2011

Thanks Tobias and Igor for your thoughts about this increment/decrement theme. @Tobias: what kind of side effect(s) are you talking about? I don't understand, sorry. @Igor, Yes, I completely agree with you that Smalltalk should not transform to a C++ like dialect. At first, I simply would like wanted ++ -- (monadic) and for that matter also += -= *= and /= (dyadic) as messages for the Integer classes, possibly as primitive methods. But then again, If this would be implemented, I can imagine people using ugly and hard to read statement trains like anotherInt += anInt ++ * 1234 , I don't find these constructs very nice either.. So, after realizing this.. perhaps you're right: just let it be. (probably would have needed here () as wel) Greetings from Ravensburg area TedvG

How to break out of endless loop using code?
by DougEdmunds April 21, 2011

April 21, 2011

I created a class that generates an endless loop. For this example, the loop just prints 1-10, back and forth. I'd like to stop the loop by using code, but when it is running, I can't type anything in a workspace. The only way I can stop it is by a manual interrupt (on XP, using Alt-<period key>) Typical run: x := MyClass2 new. x myLoop. ++ -- += -= ...
by Ted F.A. van Gaalen April 16, 2011

April 16, 2011

Hi there. I am probably not the first, and will not be the last person to come up with this suggestion, neverTheLess: To increment a numeric value I would like to write: aNum := 1. aNum ++. to increment it aNum --. to decrement it instead of: aNum := aNum + 1. For reasons of efficiency and readability. Why? Most, if not all, of today's computer processors ( they used to be called microprocessors :o) have INCrement en DECrement instructions, which are much more efficient than addition and subtraction instructions. (less clock cycles, perhaps even just one) Of course, the work should to be done by primitives, which directly utilizes the processor's INC, DEC instructions. So, wouldn't it be convenient to implement these ++ and --- methods in Pharo? and VM. I am not sure, but I suspect also a number of system classes e.g. in do: [:i|...] would perform better, wenn this method/ instruction is supported? ? Kind Regards Ted Currently making/learning Pharo/Seaside app.

For reference: what's aBuilder when you see <worldMenu>
by DougEdmunds April 16, 2011

April 16, 2011

When I got to methods involving menus and using pragmas, i.e., words in pointy brackets, such as , I ran across most of them using the parameter 'aBuilder'. Since there is no class 'Builder' the question becomes what is 'aBuilder'? Since the core contains somewhere around 60 classes that contain the word 'Builder', this is not easily answered. Thanks to the CollaborActive Book, there is an answer. Section 3.4 currently states: "The class WorldState builds the world menu using a PragmaMenuBuilder passed to all methods defining the pragma." So presumably, wherever there is 'aBuilder', mentally change that to 'aPragmaMenuBuilder', and you will be able to start figuring out what things like (aBuilder item: #System) order: 3.0; are talking about. For example, since PragmaMenuBuilder does not have a method 'item:' but it inherits from MenuRegistration, which does, you can look at the class MenuRegistration to figure out what 'aBuilder' is doing with #System, before whatever that is does something with order: :) -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/For-reference-what-s-aBuilder-when-you-see-worldMenu-… Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

if true...then what are you wainting for? http://www.pharo-project.org/community/contributors Send you data and nice picture :) Seriously, it is important for marketing among other things. Imagine you arrive to a new project...it is good to see that there are several contributing to it. Probably this page is not the best, but is something more. Re: [Pharo-users] mouse buttons in Linux, deleting certain morphs

Mariano Martinez Peck: "Settings -> System -> Keyboard -> Control and Alt keys..." changes the modifier key, but I'm looking not to have to use a modifier with a multiple button mouse. Markus Schlager: "shift + middle button" does bring up the halo allowing me do what I could not before. So for any other beginners on Linux, middle button requires the use of the shift modifier key and right button requires the use of the control key or whatever modifier might be chosen from "Settings -> System -> Keyboard -> Control and Alt keys". Thanks for the replies, Sven

[ANN] Seattle Smalltalk Users Group
by Casey Ransberger April 13, 2011

April 13, 2011

A while back I asked if anyone on the squeak-dev list was in the greater Seattle area and wanted to meet up. I did get a few responses. Thanks to those who wrote back, and I apologize for the delay. I'm starting this up in part to create a venue here where Smalltalk isn't automatically out as off-topic. The idea is that it's about Smalltalk and anything remotely related to Smalltalk. In fact I'd really like this to be open to everyone who can be respectful to other people. The rest is just a bunch of implementation detail! So if you're in the neighborhood, and you think you might like to meet up with some like minded people on a regular basis, do pop over and add yourself to the list. I figure I'll work out a schedule if and when I have signups, but in general it will probably be early evenings on Wednesdays, maybe once a month to begin with. The site is here: http://www.meetup.com/Seattle-Smalltalk-Users-Group/ If anyone here is on the vwnc list and would like to pass my message along there, or anywhere else it might reach Smalltalkers in the Seattle area, I'd be much obliged! -- Casey Ransberger
