Help (perfect for newcomers) migrating a technical FAQ

Hi folks. I had a good idea and and it perfect for someone that wants to help and don't know how. It is not the most entertained task, but I promise you will learn a lot. Mostly, if you are newcomer. The idea is basically to migrate the FAQ that is here: http://scg.unibe.ch/wiki/faq/pharofaq to a new section in the collaborative Pharo book: http://book.pharo-project.org/ So....any takers ? Let us know so that we generate a new user in the Book The idea is also to check whether what is says is still correct for pharo or if it needs an update. Another Halo Question (complete newbie)

How-dee! I'm working my way through PBE (no, I've been too broke lately to buy a copy yet *blush*, but I will) and a few other smalltalk tutorials. I've read the documents about getting halos activated in the first place. I'm on linux, where alt-shift middle-click (I'm still trying to get the button colors down) generally works. In the lights out sample, it doesn't. I can ctrl-shift "left" click, get a giant menu, and select "Add Halo." That puts a halo around the individual cell. If I close it, it disappears and shows a blue background (which I'm starting to suspect is a default for morphics...is that close?). If I jump back through the "Add Halo" hoops on that background, or actually manage to click on the border, I just get what seems to be halos for the desktop (system? background? It's always frustrating to start learning a new system and not know the terminology...then again, that's part of the fun). I've been able to close the morphic by adding a "self owner delete" mouse down handler to the cells, then commenting it out until I need it. But it's more than a little painful. I spent about two hours today googling for variations on "morphics decorated frames", but the results I got suggested that I'm not even in the ballpark. I'm sorry if I missed an FAQ or didn't dig far enough back in the mailing list archives. Thanks in advance, James

How to detect an inactive image?

At the moment I have several projects in parallel. Nearly all of them are web based. I use a cherokee server on my local machine that starts a squeak image whenever I access a project via web browser. For persistency I use piers image based persistency. But I don't want to have all of the images run all the time. I would like to shutdown images if they aren't accessed for some time. I could do it via seaside but then I don't want an image to shutdown while I'm working on the image and not accessing seaside. What is a good measure of activity inside the image? thanks, Norbert

Activating Halos around morphs

I'm new to Pharo and I'm going through the PBE book (yep, I bought it). I'm using the image that goes with the book on Windows XP Pro. I can't get halos around any morphs and I don't see a setting in the Preferences browser (I notice this was changed to Settings in later releases). I tried evaluating Preferences enable: #halosEnabled but it had no effect. Interestingly, I can get halos around the the World menu with alt+left-click, but once I pin it, I can no longer get the halos. What am I missing? Daniel Klein

come on tooth pick has even documentation and it does not look complex. redoing all over things does not reduce bugs and http://www.metaprog.com/Toothpick/docs/quickstart.html It looks clean and simple. However, take a look at the code, and I promisde that in no more than 10 minutes you get the idea how to use it. [ANN] Continue working in SimpleLogger

Hi guys (German). Today I needed to add some real log to something I am developing and I found that SimpleLogger missed those functionalities I was needing. So...I implemented them. It is 3 hours effort, so don't expect too much. But I just wanted to shared with you in case you need it. What I did basically is to define SimpleLogger like the public API. But then, this class delegates to a LoggerStrategy. I created the following implementations: TranscriptLoggerStrategy, NullLoggerStrategy, FileLoggerStrategy and FixesFileNameLoggerStrategy. In addition, I created a superclass for them, marking the API with SimpleLogger. This class is LoggerStrategy. So, now you can: - Enable and disable easily the logging (thanks to NullLoggerStrategy). - Change on runtime WHERE or HOW to log (just change the strategy). - Be able to write into a File, a Transcript, a FixedFileName, or nothing. - Extend to you own strategy (FileAppendLoggerStrategy?? SocketLoggerStrategy? etc...) I did these changes today morning so I didn't have time to write tests nor class comments. However, I wrote some class side example methods in SimpleLogger. Finally, for my own projects I want: - to use a FixedFileName (very similar to the way PharoDebug.log is used). - to only do "self log:" in my classes. The solution I did is that somewhere (maybe in a class of your project or maybe in a special class that holds this) in a class side variable I hold a Singleton with the Logger. So that you can always do for example: MyAppLogger logger log: 'zaraza'. And finally, I implemented Object >> log: (with category *MyAppPackage) log: anObject MyAppLogger logger log: anObject. With this, anywhere in the classes of my app I can do: self log: 'something'. The code is temporally commited in http://www.squeaksource.com/Marea German: if you think I should commit directly to SimpleLogger repo, just let me know. Decompiling method body returns as block?

Hi list, I'm using Pharo1.1rc2 #11400 and I want to extract the body part (the String without the selector) of a CompiledMethod, but I'm getting a BlockNode after sending #body and a MNU afterwards. This is what I do aCompiledMethod decompileWithTemps ---> a BytecodeAgnosticMethodNode which is displayed like: 'renderContentOn: aRenderer aRenderer form id: ''horizontalForm''; with: [aRenderer fieldSet: [ ... blablabla ]]' and is ok. Then aCompiledMethod decompileWithTemps body ---> a BlockNode displayed as: {[:aRenderer | aRenderer form id: 'horizontalForm'; with: [aRenderer fieldSet: [... blablabla]]]} I've expected the code string (sending #decompileString) without "[:aRenderer |" part (used to work that way). The thing is if I send #code to the BlockNode I get a "MessageNotUnderstood: CascadeNode>>code". I'd appreciate any hint to solve this. FFI Problems in Pharo 1.1 'Callout mechanism not available'

I'm having intermittent problems with FFI in Pharo 1.1. I often get my image to the point where I can only get the error 'Callout mechanism not available' whenever I call a DLL function. These functions have previously worked perfectly but then stop working for some reason. Anyone know what causes this and what the fix/workaround is ? The only solution I've found so far is to save my packages and load them into a new image which is a bit time consuming. Simple OO smaltalk question

I'm new to Smalltalk and come from the java world and am looking for a bit of help on how something should be implemented. Assume I have a Person class and that there are three subclasses of that class Admin, Teacher, Student. I also have a class called UserManager I want to implement a method on UserManger>> class firstPageForUser: user This method looks at the class of the user and returns an initial page for each user after log in. I have this method implmented: Person>>class firstPageForUser ^nil Now on the UserManager clas>> firstPageForUser: user (user isKindOf: Person ) ifTrue: [returnPage := ( (user class) firstPageForUser) ]. Which as I'm sure most of you realize doesn't work. I'm not sure how to structure the call so that the right message gets sent to the class. My understanding is that even though the subclasses don't implement this method yet, that the method should be passed up the class tree till it finds the method in Person. However, I also know that the syntax for the method I've written isn't correct. What I want to do is make the call on the class for each subclass. Hi all, I'm writing a parser like the following ( $> asParser , 'gi' asParser , $| asParser , ( #digit asParser plus flatten plusLazy: $| asParser ) , ( (#letter asParser / #digit asParser / #space asParser / #punctuation asParser ) asParser plus flatten ) ) end In the attachment you will see the my sample input and the parsing result collection in which the last element is "|abc", but I want the #plusLazy: (or #plusGreedy: ?) to consume the $| delimiter so it results in #($> 'gi' $| #('648') $| 'abc') any suggestions?
