If itâs always been that way - and things rely on it, sure. But it doesnât feel like the Smalltalk way to me. Having to know about adding -1 seems very C, whereas Smalltalk always seems more natural ... and 5 to: 1 seems like you would count down, not be an empty range and do nothing. But as you say, itâs personal. Iâm still curious though. If you convert a Dictionary with numbers as keys it will produce not valid JSON [1], since all object keys must be quoted. E.g. NeoJSONWriter toString: (Dictionary with: 1->'foo'). or (Dictionary with: 1->'foo') asJson Should the library generate quoted keys? Seaside's WAJsonCanvas is manual, so it is up to the developer to render the object properly, but NeoJSON does it automatically. How to test a new Iceberg baseline?

How does one go about testing an Iceberg/metacello baseline? Two parts to this actually - I want to check one under my control - and am wondering if there is a lint checker or some way to tell me what it will load (without having to check it in and try. Or if you do this - can you test loading from a branch? Similarly - if I want to try improving a baseline in another project - is there an easy way to do this (in this case, I canât really check it in - or I suppose I can fork all the dependencies and put them all in branches - but then how do convince each part of the chain to load from my forkâ¦ this sounds like a world of pain). So any tips? Tim

I've just been caught out with Intervals - why can't you do: 5 to: 1 do: [ :i | Transcript show: i printString] (eg a negative interval)? if you want to iterate down a series of numbers do you really have to do: 5 to: 1 by: -1 do: [â¦ I always assumed that if x > y the step was automatically -1 (but its not). I asked on Discord - and someone pointed out that if you use variables it could be ambiguous - but is it really? I donât know if other smalltalks do it this way (I vaguely recall Dolphin going down, but not sure). Either way the Interval comment should mention this - and Iâll correct it when I get the wisdom of the crowd here. Tim

What does the Package and Sub-Package comment do?

Hi - I notice that you can sort of put comments on packages - but Iâm not sure if this is working or if its supposed to work? When I type something it seems to create and extra Manifest tag, and then the comment that I type seems to be the same for the package and all of its sub tags? Is this a work in progress? Should Calypso even show a comment for the tags (or is it read only for them - as its the parent). Iâm just not clear on what it does, and whether I can programmatically add stuff to it or not? (I was thinking for exercism to store exercise information there - but maybe I will stick to the test class comment) Tim

Bruno OmniBase was ported to Pharo 6+ in Jun 2018. The original porting work was done by Esteban Lorenzano, but he pointed out that, as a non-user, he is not in a position to provide any support. It was used to a small extent by me, and much more by Matias Maretto. The repo is at https://github.com/estebanlm/OmniBase. There were a couple of tweaks needed to get it fully working; I don't know whether they were incorporated in the repo version. I haven't really used it much - my project got overtaken by other work. I think Matias used it more. You can see the whole story if you search for the subject 'OmniBase for Pharo 6' in this forum. Iliad & disbled JS

Hi, has support for disabled JavaScript been removed from Iliad? Embedding object properties in NeoJSON mappings

Hi all (again), As part of writing the port (and adaptation to use Zinc and NeoJSON), a CouchDB JSON-REST API, now I find something I don't know how to solve using NeoJSON mappings. All objects you store in CouchDB at a particular URI are saved as "Documents", so if you save a dictionary with keys "name", "height", "c" to "/people/1234" , when you query "people/1234" you get the keys of the saved dictionary PLUS to extra keys called _id and _rev. Then when you query (GET) back the document you get a JSON like this: {"_id": ..., "_rev": ..., "name": ..., "height":...,} My Idea is that I can wrap any object serializable as JSON within aDocument, but then if I define CouchDocument class>>#neoJsonMapping: mapper as: mapper for: self do: [ :mapping | mapping mapAccessor: #id to: '_id'. mapping mapAccessor: #revision to: '_rev'. mapping mapAccessor: #class to: '_class' ]. I have no way to "flatten"/"merge" anObject within aDocument. I would expect something like mapper for: self do: [ :mapping | mapping mapAccessor: #id to: '_id'. mapping mapAccessor: #revision to: '_rev'. mapping mapAccessor: #class to: '_class' mapping embed: [:object | object whatToEmbed] ]. Of course this is awkward, because if I need to read it back, the "extraction" of the embeded properties needs to know which belongs to which and more importantly , what to instantiate! Of course I can do it manually without using NeoJSON (It's already being done [1]) , but I like when different libraries things fit naturally together :) Am I stretching it too much? :) Regards, [1] Currently the writing is done manually and the refresh (which is also a GET) does the following: CouchDocument>>#refresh " Update this Document to the latest revision " | response | response := self information. Some interesting thoughts below - but my understanding is these images are being created by Pharo Launcher , so they should be isolated from one another? I also donât understand why you can load with 32bit (multiple images) but only once with 64bit. Do we load radically different git code with longer paths on 64bit? (Strange isnât it?) Possibly worth caveating this is with 2-3 users so far, and only noticed this pattern with the last one. Also - has anyone created an issue for these path problems - Iâm curious if my results match anything else. Are we really sure its just down to non-determinism of the load process (possibly - but it seems very suspicious to me). There is something more fishy about windows going on I suspectâ¦ I will track down the Exercism dependencies to see if any of them are FileTree - having said that, on OSX (where it loads cleanly - I would expect to be able to find one of those methods in my image - but again I canât? They look like valid methods - but why arenât they in my image? Its like the load process is downloading other stuff on its own and then not loading that into the image? Iceberg Custom SSH Keys

Hi, Does Iceberg support a pair of key generated with PuTTY as RSA ? I can Push local changes with TortoiseGit client. But inside Pharo i get "Iceberg Authentication Error" when doing a Push. It may be from one of the dependencies that are pulled in. To identify which, search for that file under `pharo-local/iceberg` directory. I believe the repo may have been cloned successfully, its just the libgit binary can't `stat` long filenames. What does mean "Detached Working Copy" in Iceberg ?

Hi, We have in our server Gitolite instance running. >From Pharo System browser we commit changes to local path and with TortoiseGit we upload to the remote. So far so good but on Iceberg Repository Status i see "Detached Working Copy". What is the meaning of the message ? The the remote is no been "handle" by Pharo ? Windows 64bit, long filename issue but after a second load, how to categorise and report this?

We noticed a weird problem when testing the pharo exercism project. When loading on Windows10 in a fresh 64bit image with the following evaluate in the playground: Metacello new baseline: 'Exercism'; repository: 'github://exercism/pharo-smalltalk:master/dev/src'; load. The project seemed to load correctly (but we seemed to hit an issue with an http submit giving a 404 error - which weirdly works in 32bit and OSX 64/32). Anyway - the real question here is that when trying to reproduce this in a second fresh 64bit image 2 users now have reported getting the long filename error: LGit_GIT_EEXISTS: Failed to stat file 'C:/Users/sam/Documents/Pharo/images/exercism-test-run-7.0-32...stance/testRaiseUnexpectedMessageWhenTooMuchMessages.st': The filename or extension is too long. And the second user got the same but with a different filename: ruleRBUtlitiesMethodsRuleV1FalsePositve.st I know there is a long standing problem with Windows and file path lengths - but why would it work the first time and then subsequently fail in fresh installs? Is something being cached on windows that isnât on other platforms? (Writing this - Iâm wondering if there is that shared pharo Iceberg setting for Share repos that might be implicated?) Also - given Exercism is in Tonel format and those files arenât in exercism, and in fact Iâm struggling to find where they are defined (my images donât have them) - there is something very weird going on. I wonder if we have another error that is masking all of this? Ultimately my question is - where is the Pharo issue that is tracking this problem? Some great suggestions here guys - I had forgotten there were conditionals in expandMacrosâ¦ that is the better solution. Why not use the condition macro so you have a single string literal, that in the future could be used for translation? E.g. | occurences | occurences := 3. I was browsing some of the Pharo issues (always worth doing) - and noticed an interesting one about Test results reporting and pluralisation (https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo/issues/2578) In it, I hadn't noticed String>>asPluralBasedOn: before (and judging from many messages in the image, many others hadn't either). I'm fixing something similar for a refactoring bug and can use this technique there (although from memory, it comes with a health warning as if ever we want to internalise the messages in Pharo, this will need a different approach). However we are probably a distance from doing that - so cleaning up what we have is a good start. It is not clear to me what the semantics of such a selector would be. Consider this example: t := [:x | x copy == x]. a := t value: 1.0e38. b := t value: 1.0e308. What do you expect a and b to be? GNU Smalltalk: a=true, b=true. My Smalltalk, 32-bit or 64-bit: a=true, b=true. Squeak/Pharo, 32-bit: a=false, b=false. Squeak/Pharo, 64-bit: a=true, b=false. There are two quite different reasons why x copy == x might be true: * x is immutable (including its parts), and can be thought of as a mathematical value, so that there is no need to copy it Examples: every kind of number, characters, booleans, immutable collections, block closures * x is a way of accessing a unique resource, and should not be copied, so making copy the identity is a safety measure. how to test, if the class has "shared identity" of instances in the whole image (SmallIntegers, Symbols...)

Hello, some classes, like Symbols or SmallIntegers, shares identity of value instances in the whole image (I may say it wrong), so: 1 == 1 copy. [true] #aaa == #aaa copy. [true] all other classes not, like Strings, Objects etc., so: 'aaa' == 'aaa' copy. [false] Is there any test method (maybe on the class side) I could ask for this (isXXX)? Thanks! pf

If you're in Windows only 32 bit is supported. 2) For RDBMS forget about DBXTalk and Garage, I would suggest you go straight to the PostgreSQL client (P3) or SQLite. Those are maintained and used, the rest... who knows. If you need ORM you can use Glorp with any of those. 3) As Sven mentioned there are many options, there is people using Docker containers managed by Docker Swarm, so the options are many. But if you use Seaside with stateful sessions (you'll need affinity by session or IP). Regards, Esteban A. Hi Dale, The issue I faced was a trivial one, but also easy to miss. I installed a vanilla linux environment to run it, and git was not initialized, so I needed to config the user.name and user.email global settings. So every time Sett executed `git` it was complaining about the missing config. In the docs it talks about Rowan, but I couldn't spot what is the Rowan part in the repo, other than the "rowan" directory itself. There aren't any Rowan related classes in the image. Esteban A. Pharo general questions for a commercial application

Hi, My name is Bruno i'been using Smalltalk since 1999 for commercial applications, mostly Dolphin, GemStone/S and Visual Works. Now we have a commercial project and we are going to use Pharo :) So we have some general questions. 1) Which version of Pharo to use in a production deployment 6.1 or 7.0 ? 2) We need a local database to Pharo app, which open source database is better to use with Pharo: mysql, postgree or .... In term of packages for Pharo. There is https://guillep.github.io/DBXTalk/ but i do not know if is up to date. 3) There is any documentation about deployment and maintenance for a Pharo + Seaside app ? Dale, I tried to test SETT to migrate a Package from Store to our repo. But it fails while initializing the git repository. I set the destination config to `isNewRepository := false`, then it works as expected. I'm testing it against the Cincom Public Repository, which being remote and full of code (and garbage), limiting by date isn't useful if I can't filter by a particular package name/pattern (I couldn't find such option). Hi, I think that using Fossil depends on what things are you synchronizing and how fast. In the Grafoscopio community we use Fossil to sync documentation (Grafoscopio notebooks and Wiki pages) and issues, which means documents that move slow, and we use CodiMD [1] (Firebase based) when we do synchronization on documents we write together in real time (like hackathon/documentathon notes). Usually we publish them in a single Fossil repository (see [2] for an example of this combination of slow + quick sync combining Fossil and CodiMD). Once again - super helpful - Iâll definitely bookmark this one. Half the problem is that every time I think I understand what is going on and confidently do a bunch of stuff I then discover that its not what I thought. How do you easily re-categorise methods in Calypso?

Hi - Iâm scratching my head over how to easily re-caegorise methods in calypso? Iâve overridden some methods in subclasses and picked up the wrong category (which the critic is slapping me for). But when I click on the method - I canât drag it to the new category, so if I click on the pencil in the status line (or the current category name - not sure why they are independently clickable?) - it shows me a rather unhelpful list of protocols. Iâm not sure where this list comes from as it doesnât seem to include any of the protocols that are already in the class? (and those which I want to use?). So I have to start typing âaccesâ and can click on accessingâ¦ Am I missing a simple trick - or is this an area that needs some work?

How to uncache Commander menu items

I was going to write this question - but Denis pinged me on Discord - however I thought I would lob this into the list in case someone else hits the problem and is searching for it. (Maybe I should stick this in Calypso or Commander faq). My problem was that I had built a sub menu in Calypso and specified the order of the menu items as described in the docs. packageContextMenuActivation <classAnnotation> ^ CmdContextMenuActivation byItemOf: ClyExercismMenuGroup order: self contextMenuOrder for: ClyTaggedClassGroup asCalypsoItemContext However when I went to add some icons and change the ordering I was finding that my menu wasnât updating. There are 2 solutions (one better than the other). The brute force way is: CmdContextMenuActivation resetCache. Hi Tim, Pierce, No problem, I was going to ask about Fossil as well, I know it is a self contained SCM, with issue tracker, and whatnot. People that uses it don't want to use git except if forced to. So I also ask how this would work. :) I saw SQLite-sync before, but it is a commercial product, and its platform support/setup seems convoluted. dqlite might be a viable alternative, from more than reliable provider, it's is not clear whether I have to use a different library to access SQLite (it seems so) or a special wire protocol/api calls. The only drawback I see is that, according to the the FAQ [1], from the CAP theorem the consensus algorithm puts Consistency and Partition and leaves out Availability. I'm looking into CouchDB and reading its "Definitive Guide"[2] book. It seems straightforward to install, distribute and uses a MVCC approach that puts availability as its top priority, and since my domain data has a low probability of conflicts, the eventual consistency will be more than enough. OTOH I'm not used to document based DBMS, which will require me to rethink a lot of my domain and application models. Also, it has a simple HTTP API (JSON/REST) and there is an existing Smalltalk client that might be ported and adapted to Pharo https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COUCHDB/Smalltalk Background: I have the prospect to develop an application to replace an existing one that is a desktop app that "syncs" from/to a central server every 15', most of the data entry happens locally and the central server is read only for the most part, it is old, ugly, but it works "reliably", so I must come with an alternative that is as reliable as that, and then provide a better UI/UX, new features, etc. Regards! Also, while you're doing it, you may have not committed your code anywhere => and that's dangerous, because you may lose it. So, imagine this: you are in branch A and you have these changes that you wan to put in branch B. Instead of doing strange stashing/checkout blah, you create a new branch temp/AtoB and commit there. And then you move to B and apply a smart cherry pick operation of your changes. Martin was visiting the team last week and he had a super nice prototype: you select what you want to cherry pick from a branch and it automatically selects all (static) dependencies in the same branch, and proposes you doing a commit/merge of that. I don't know how far are we from this, but it would be super nice to do easy backporting between branches (think pharo8 -> pharo7). Phorms repository?

LibC uniqueInstance system: 'zip -r 123.zip zipme/' ... ? And 2.: Is it ok to use OSSubprocess on in 64 bit images even though the documentation says it doesn't work ?
