Hi, DBXTalk is good work! I really love to see that stuff going forward! Before I spend a lot of time playing around: has anybody tried using Pharo/GLORP/ODBC (Access or SQLSrv) on Windows? Or Pharo/GLORP/SQLite on Windows? Is there some place on the web where I can find info on how to set this up? In an open source context, this is probably a heretic question, and if I could choose freely, Linux and PostgresQL would be my favorite. OTOH: The fact that each windows installation comes with an Access engine and respective ODBC driver makes the combination very attractive for starting something on a windows machine really fast. No installation of anything but Pharo, no need for admin rights or anything. Just set up the odbc driver and off you go! Great chance to show the strength of Smalltalk and Glorp to other team members and friends... SQLite is a similar story: copy the dlls onto the machine and the journey can start. Joachim

RESTful Pharo app (not Seaside)

What's the simplest/best way to communicate with a Pharo desktop app via RESTful API? Is anyone doing this? I frequently want to communicate with a running image and REST seems a little easier than XMLRPC which I've been using. I saw SimpleRestServer (http://forum.world.st/Simple-rest-server-td3571503.html) but was wondering if anyone has some good advice. Thanks. The BTree package contains a class called DateTree for exactly that purpose. Works very well with huge collections of date intervals. red-black and other trees

Hi - I am considering implementing a Centered Interval Tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interval_tree) because I have to get the set of Timespans a particular Timespan overlaps from an arbitrary set of Timespans. In looking around I can only find the BTree implementation on SqueakSource, and the Left-Leaning-Red-Black-Tree linked to in the following list posting: http://forum.world.st/Interesting-survey-about-smalltalk-tp2261561p2263370.… Does Pharo either not need/benefit from the various kinds of trees? Or is it trivial to implement/adapt the BTree to behave as a Red-Black Tree (or, in my case, the Centered Interval Tree) and as such I just need to learn how to do that? Thanks Paul

Well, I got past most of the RB and OB issues by doing this: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfMetacello'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfMetacello) project version: #stable) load. Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfSeaside30'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) project version: #stable) load. Apparently, it's just a good idea to upgrade Metacello before doing anything else. Being new and using the One-Click Pharo image, I was just following the instructions that pop up when you evaluate 'DEVImageWorkspaces openExternalProjectWorkspace.' It would maybe be a good idea if the instructions were updated to recommend upgrading Metacello before doing anything else. Without Seaside-Tools-OmniBrowser you need to use an expression like the following to start the web service: WAKomEncoded startOn: 8080 There is no 'load everything except this package' function in Metacello (maybe I'll add that) so to get all of Seaside excluding the one package means that you have to explicitly load the other packages ... this is the step that I need to spend some time on ... the best answer is to add a group to the config... This is terrific good news. Top priority for a "real" Smalltalk system: auto-config that works very reliably across major and minor releases ("very" means fatal errors in any 12 month period over 5 years are less than [ here set a target and publish it and publicly track that performance.] Builds of Cincom VisualWorks with Seaside 2.x were in the usual tradition of loading Smalltalk (Smalltalkers tend to decry that the St environmen is not well-known or appreciated, but just as well that this non-issue was the in-house secret-of-polichinelle ... The challenge of building Smalltalk may have compared well to Java or C++, but what comfort should have been taken in that? That tradional nightmare has been confounding versioning with building. My hope had been that Roel Wuyts and SOUL would lead to a solution through a build agent able to backtrack and achieve a build where one was possible given certain minimal constraits and effectively report the build obstacles without ever dropping into a debugger. Congratulations and this wish: may it almost always build and build well and most often build as intended (and leave - most often - only the in-house developer-engineers living on that bleeding edge.) May Pharo soon be the best "mature" Smalltalk environment (regardless of which dialect leads along the bleeding-edge.) FÃ©licitations & viel GlÃ¼ck !

FYI: No. In fact there is no such thing as the "Refactoring Browser". People common refer to the "Refactoring Engine" as the "Refactoring Browser". The original "Refactoring Browser" was broken for decades (nobody used it) and I removed it about 3 years ago from the refactoring code. The refactoring engine is just a model. OmniBrowser is independent of the refactoring engine and vice-versa. Only if you load the package OmniBrowser-Refactoring you connect the two and give the refactoring engine a view. Be part of the consortium and pay the fee; and 2. Not be part of the consortium and use Pharo for free ? For OB in 1.3 you still need to load #bleedingEdge I think. Tangaloor, Other systems have conditional compilation and Smalltalk has conditional loading ... OmniBrowser and its eco system is very brittle ... it seems that they OB is constantly breaking when the underlying system changes (not surprising at one level), but that causes particular problems for Seaside, because it must have one window that is written against OB ... I think that the OB configuration is no longer maintained so it is a shame that this is affecting the use of Seaside30... one can load without that particular OB dependency but you need to understand a little more about Seaside and Metacello (you must decide which packages you want over and above the Base system). I never load the full system anymore, because of the headaches that OB causes ... it does seem to be constantly broken ... If I had my druthers I would change the Seaside30 configuration so that it was easy to exclude OB, but I am not the only one making decisions about the config ... I am a bit busy for the next few days, but if you ping me at the end of the week, I will publish the instructions for loading Seaside30 without OB ... if you google around a bit you will probably find several threads on this topic (and even quite possibly instructions on how to load Seaside30 without OB:)... I'm also having this issue. I'm fairly new to Smalltalk and Pharo. I've used the Seaside One-click installer and don't remember there being issues with the System Browser there. I have tried running: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser'; load. (ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser project latestVersion) load. and (ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser project version: #stable) load. And that seems to have a similar set of dependency issues. Also, when you dig into the version specs, it seems like it's grabbing #stable of ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser. I admin that I don't know enough about Metacello to know if that's just the version for the ConfigurationOfOmniBrowser or if it calls out the specific Monticello versions that it is supposed to be grabbing. It does seem like the #stable label would seem to be a moving target, though, and shouldn't necessarily be called out inside these package recipes. If so, the fees you propose for single-person companies and small companies look a little bit high to me... I would at least make them depend on the benefits or some other kind of deal. Pharo Consortium News: let's make it real.

Hello everybody We got a final discussion with INRIA representatives and we will now set up a consortium for pharo. INRIA will support the consortium by funding on advanced engineer for a year (may be two if the consortium work well). So this is quite good around 55Keuros on consortium. There some strings attached: We will not be able to pay remote development since this is regulated under the public market french laws but we will be able to hire people (on french rate if they work in France). We will have to see the legal period to spent the money. The general idea is to see how the consortium evolves: ideally we would like to see if we can get it outside inria within a five years period. Now what we plan to do: - We would like to make the list of companies that sign the agreement letter public. Because this is important that other companies joins the consortium. - We will offer a free participation to any individual. - We are wondering if we could have a academic fee for the institution that want it: we have to discuss the fee. Any suggestions would be good: I was thinking that 500 Euros would be good for rich countries and 200 for the other ones. Now tell us. - We could also have way to pay a license or a way to give money to the consortium. Now the complex part: - we would like to collect money from companies and again we will need your help to understand what is the correct model. We are thinking: single person company: starting at 300 Euros "small company": starting at 2500 Euros large companies: starting at 5000 Euros. We would like to keep the model really simple and transparent. Now our goal is to be able to pay an engineer like igor full time because there is so much to do. Charles, I seem to remember that there was an issue revolving around latestVersion, so out of curiosity what is the result of printing: ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) project latestVersion) If it is not 3.0.6 then try an explicit load of version 3.0.6... ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) project version: '3.0.6') load If it is 3.0.6 then that is curious because when 3.0.6 was released it loaded cleanly into Pharo 1.3 (that was current at the time) .... Presumably the configurations have changed since then in such a way to break the Seaside load on Pharo1.3 ... I looked on the Pharo Jenkins server but apparently Pharo1.3 is no longer tested? So it's not possible to tell when the problem might have been introduced... Loading Seaside 3.0 cripples System browser

I downloaded the Pharo 1.3 one click. I then attempted to load Seaside using the following mechanism: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfSeaside30'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) project latestVersion) load. It complained twice about some package dependencies i.e. related to RBxxx packages. I proceeded through both and it seemingly terminated fine. Seaside was loaded including the Seaside control panel. However, doing a right mouse over the leftmost panel (Categories) resulted in an MNU. Also stuff like syntax highlighting became inactive. A more strait-forward implementation of what you are looking for can be found in PPNodeFormatter of the package 'PrettyPetit' in the PetitParser repository. PPNodeFormatter is a subclass of RBProgramNodeVisitor and it converts the standard RB AST to a layout box model AST for formatting. There you see that for each RB AST node one or more document nodes are composed and returned. The parent-child relationship is setup automatically when composing the objects (in this example only one way, but you could change that to also include the link from the child to the parent). Also, you can get nice pre-build Pharo based Seaside images from Lukas' Jenkins server, including One Click variants: http://jenkins.lukas-renggli.ch/ I am currently using that one for 1.3 and it has syntax highlighting and completion working. Loading syntax highlighter in Pharo 1.3

sorry for the newbie question but I pop myself in here once in a while. Just downloaded Pharo 1.3 but decided to not use the one click since I wanted to use the Cog VM. After loading Seaside from Squeak Source , which gave me a couple pre-req missing warnings which I proceeded thru (not of relevance), I began browsing around and noticed that the syntax highlighter was not loaded or active. Create object model from AST using visitor

Hi, I'm writing a parser at the moment. The first step I did using petit parser to get from the grammar to my own AST like structure. Now I like to create my working model from the AST. And I'm thinking what would be the best way to do. If I want to create a model from the structure it turns out to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I'm using a visitor for this. In a typical visitor every element is treated in isolation. I can treat subelement B in the visitor but I cannot assign it to its parent A because there is no link. And I'm not really convinced that introducing return values in the visitor is the right way to go. What I need to do is a visitor that transforms one thing into another thing with having the need that existing parent-child relationships need to be preserved through the transformation. ESUG Video upload continuing...

Hi, We are slowly, but steadily uploading videos to Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/user/esugboard There are now 50 videos already. The idea is to upload all videos we have from 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In addition, the "Deep into Smalltalk" tutorials. If you want to be notified about single uploads, there are multiple possibilities: - subscribe to Youtube, turn on email notification. Stdb MySQL Protocol Driver update in squeaksource

A couple of updates to the Stdb* projects in SqueakSource. Project StdbMysqlProtocol: There is a new version of the protocol driver that can now handle authentication for MySQL users with old style (short hash) passwords. It handles the fallback silently during the handshake. This was an issue reported by Andreas for the previous version of the driver package. Project StdbMysqlImpl : There is a new version of the Stdb API implementation for MySQL. This one has some test infrastructure fixes, and consolidates the use of test credentials so that a single username/password combination is used for all tests. The packages were tested with MySQL 5.0.67 community edition under Mac OS X. Best, Anindya
