I agree. There are many things you shouldn't do for any given dataset but which no formal structure will prevent you from doing. Data science is very much about shallow computations, with automation limited to simple stuff that is then applied to large datasets. Tools like data type analysis are no more than a help for the data scientist, who is the ultimate arbiter of what is or is not OK to do. Think of this as the data equivalent of a spell checker. A spell checker won't recognize bad grammar, but it's still a useful tool to have. Cheers, Konrad.

Consider the following partial class hierarchy from my Smalltalk system: Object VectorSpace Complex Quaternion Magnitude MagnitudeWithAddition DateAndTime QuasiArithmetic Duration Number AbstractRationalNumber Integer SmallInteger There is a whole fleet of "numeric" things like Matrix3x3 which have some arithmetic properties but which cannot be given a total order consistent with those properties. Complex is one of them. It makes less than no sense to make Complex inherit from Magnitude, so it cannot inherit from Number, This means that the common superclass of 1 and 1 - 2 i is Object. Yet it makes perfect sense to have a column of Gaussian integers some of which have zero imaginary part. So "the dataType is Object means there's an error" fails at the first hurdle. Conversely, the common superclass of 1 and DateAndTime now is MagnitudeWithAddition, which is not Object, but the combination is probably wrong, and the dataType test fails at the second hurdle. "You might want to compute an average..." But dataType is no use for that either, as I was at pains to explain. If you have a bunch of angles expressed as Numbers, you *can* compute an arithmetic mean of them, but you *shouldn't*, because that's not how you compute the average of circular measures. The obvious algorithm (self sum / self size) does not work at all for a collection of DateAndTimes, but the notion of average makes perfect sense and a subtly different algorithm works well. (I wrote a technical report about this, if anyone is interested.) dataType will tell you you CAN take an average when you cannot or should not. dataType will tell you you CAN'T take an average when you really honestly can. The distinctions we need to make are not the distinctions that the class hierarchy makes. For example, how about the distinction between *ordered* factors and *unordered* factors? Logging Frameworks

What are the current options for logging? Beacon seems to be the most modern one, but the Github repository doesn't seem very active (maybe it forked somewhere else). Given that the logs might come from different worker images, is there something that can work via HTTP or similar? (it is, forwarding the logged events to a server). I am not quite sure what the point of the datatypes feature is. x := nil. aSequence do: [:each | each ifNotNil: [ x := x ifNil: [each class] ifNotNil: [x commonSuperclassWith: each class]]]. doesn't seem terribly complicated. My difficulty is that from a statistics/data science perspective, it doesn't seem terribly *useful*. I'm currently reading a book about geostatistics with R (based on a survey of the Kola peninsula). For that task, it is ESSENTIAL to know the units in which the items are recorded. If Calcium is measured in mg/kg and Caesium is measured in Âµg/kg, you really really need to know that. This is not information you can derive by looking at the representation of the data in Pharo. Consider for example 1. mass of animals in kg 2. maximum speed of cars in km/h 3. volume of rain in successive dates, in mL (for fixed area) 4. directions taken by sand-hoppers released at different times of day, in degrees 5. region of space illuminated by light bulbs in steradians. These might all have the *same* representation in Pharo, but they are *semantically* very different. 1 and 2 are linear, but cannot be negative. 3 also cannot be negative, but the variable is a *time series*, which 1 and 2 are not. 4 is a circular measure, and taking the usual arithmetic mean or median would be an elementary blunder producing meaningless answers. 5 is perhaps best viewed as a proportion. (These are all actual examples, by the way.) THIS kind of information IS valuable for analysis. The difference between SmallInteger and Float64 is nowhere near as interesting. There's a bunch of weather data that i'm very interested in which has things like air temperature, soil temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction (last 5 minutes), gust speed and direction (maximum in last 5 minutes), illumination in W/m^2 (visible, UVB, UVA), rainfall, and of course date+time. Temperatures are measured on an interval scale, so dividing them makes no sense. Nor does adding them. If it's 10C today and 10C tomorrow, nothing is 20C. But oddly enough arithmetic means DO make sense. Humidity is bounded between 0 and 100; adding two relative humidities makes no sense at all. Medians make sense but means do not. Wind speed and direction are reported as separate variables, but they are arguably one 2D vector quantity. Illumination is on a ratio scale. Dividing one illumination by another makes sense, or would if there were no moonless nights... The total illumination over a day makes sense. Rainfall is also on a ratio scale. Dividing the rainfall on one day by that on another would make sense if only the usual measurement were not 0. Total rainfall over a day makes sense. The whole problem a statistician/data scientist faces is that there is important information you need to know even which *basic* operations make sense that has already disappeared by the time Pharo stores it, and cannot be inferred from the DataFrame. I remember one time I was given a CSV file with about 50 variables and it took me about 2 weeks to recover this missing meta-information. I've been doing exactly that. It is, creating a new DB file for each test, and I was having the same problem as you. I suggested a change to the driver to cover that situation: https://github.com/pharo-rdbms/Pharo-SQLite3/pull/22/files Try applying that change and see if that works. I still prefer to recreate the database, it will give you a full fresh start, and if you want you can halt before the deletion of the db, to analyze its internal state. Best regards! Esteban A. Hi Looking at SQLite3Connection>>#close: "Let FFIExternalResourceManager take care." "dbHandle ifNotNil: \[ library close: dbHandle \]." dbHandle := nil. isOpen := false. The commented out lines means that SQLite3Library>>#apiClose is not called when calling SQLite3Connection>>#close. But looking at https://www.sqlite.org/c3ref/close.html and FFIExternalResourceManager it seems like it should take care of releasing resources (i.e., finalizing prepared queries etc) before calling SQLite3Library>>#apiClose. So this is by design? I will have a go at finalizing everything and call SQLite3Library>>#apiClose, at least while developing. Vince

Hi I like to develop my db schema as I develop the code - TDD-style. So I need to keep dropping the database each and every time I need to update the schema and rerun the code. Now coming to the next part, Kindly have a look at the below code. ------------------------------ series := #( nil nil nil ) asDataSeries. series calculateDataType. "UndefinedObject" . A nil value, or a Series of nil values yields UndefinedObject as its super class. There was an error with the dataset used on that example blog post. I have corrected it now. The problem was that the dataset was not clean, and had some garbage values of different types in that column. This resulted in a column, with type Object . This was the dataset and specifically the last column resulted in this mistake. Is BuildingApplicationWithSpec2 project dead?

Hi . I'm talking about the Spec2 book located at https://github.com/SquareBracketAssociates/BuildingApplicationWithSpec2 . This book was really helpful to get me started with building GUI . However, it is obviously incomplete and there is a message from a maintainer (StÃ©phane Ducasse) inside the book stating that he'll stop working on it. Moreover, pull requests from Stephan Eggermont and rvillemeur have been waiting since last year. So, Is this book project dead and what are the alternatives? Regards.

mongo code triggered #maxExternalSemaphores: on image restart

I had a problem where my image became unusable a few seconds after starting up. I got help on the database discord channel, and got my image back to usable. Hereâs a summary. [MacOS, Pharo9, MongoTalk 1.24, the image runs a Seaside,Voyage,Mongo app]. 1. I got the stack trace (see attached) a few seconds after image startup, then the image became unusable and had to be terminated from the OS. 2. I eventually figured out that I needed to re-establish the ssh tunnel to my mongo database. After that, I was able to start the image without problem. 3. A potential fix may have been in MongoTalk 1.25, where connections were being leaked due to non-local returns. The fix (see attached) would add an ensure: block. I filed-in the fix, which I was able to do, with the ssh tunnel on. 4. I turned off the ssh tunnel, then tried to start the image with the MongoTalk change installed and saved. But I still got the debugger after a few seconds. I eventually noticed that the image was still usable, if I just closed the debugger (actually, closed it two times, because it came up again). In the Transcript was: WARNING: Had to GC to make room for more external objects. If this happens often, it would be a good idea to either: - Raise the maxExternalSemaphores size. - Write your code to explicitly release them rather than wait for finalization. WARNING: Had to increase size of semaphore signal handling table due to many external objects concurrently in use You should increase this size at startup using #maxExternalSemaphoresSilently: Current table size: 1024 WARNING: Had to increase size of semaphore signal handling table due to many external objects concurrently in use You should increase this size at startup using #maxExternalSemaphoresSilently: Current table size: 2048 So the MongoTalk fix would have salvaged the image too. 5. Digging around, I found the following would clean things up: MongoMonitor allInstances. "size: 95" MongoMonitor allInstancesDo: [ :each | each stop; tearDown ]. Smalltalk garbageCollect. Facing a very strange Issue while creating a Pull Request

Hello Everyone, I have been working in Pharo for the PolyMath/DataFrame project for around 4 months now. There has been an issue with every PR I try to make.I did not pay enough attention to it at the beginning, but it is making it hard for the maintainers of the project to review my PR. The problem is that Github shows more number of files changed than actual changed, I actually made changes in 2 files but total files changed in Github shows 8, while I did not even touch the remaining files.but the code is the same and it is removed and added in remaining files which is super strange. I am using Windows 10 Operating System with 8GB Ram and 512 GB SSD, Intel core 13 10th Generation. I tried the following to solve the issue but failed: 1) Uninstalled Pharo Launcher and re-installed it again. Even deleted every image and started everything fresh again. 2) Created a new Github account only for this problem, forked a fresh copy there, but did not help. 3) Tried Linux Mint Operating System and did the same. While the first PR through Linux (where I added just a test method) worked, I started facing the same problem later on. 4) I also somehow managed to grab a Mac OS High Sierra and installed Pharo, did the same. But no change. 5) I thought this could be due to CRLF to LF changes, which is common when switching Operating Systems, like End of the file, end of the line, tabs being converted to spaces etc. But this is definitely not the case here I guess. 5) I have also tried using the SSH protocol while cloning from Github. As a follow-on question to this - it seems that the playground keeps hidden references to things (although the image I am trying this in, looks to be some earlier P9 image - so potentially the GTK version of the playground is better). However I am wondering why if I close my playground and open a fresh one, and restore its snippets - why the following doesnât seem to clean up garbage: 3 timesRepeat: [ Smalltalk garbageCollect ]. MwpDocumentDetails allInstances. Neither does the following: Smalltalk garbageCollect. Smalltalk garbageCollect. Smalltalk garbageCollect. MwpDocumentDetails allInstances. But the following: Smalltalk garbageCollect. <- cmd-g this 3 times MwpDocumentDetails allInstances. Does? Something seems rather suspicious to me in all thisâ¦ although I need to replicate this in a proper P9 image - but I was curious what the difference is - and whether its the playground that is the leading cause of this? Are there any docs for ReferenceFinder?

Hi everyone - I was curious why my image is 3gb, and recently someone mentioned ReferenceFinder which Iâve not used before - however the class comment for it is very terse and it doesnât really explain what a âreference path isâ and how to interpret the results you get back from it? eg. I did the following - as I have lots of instances of Document object I have been using in an an inspector - however I had cleared out the owner objects list of these things, and so they should be gone. However I see the following: ReferenceFinder findAllPathsTo: X allInstances first. Result - a collection of objects (as in the photo). So am I to understand that the âpathâ is actually the collection? Each item in the collection is the next segment of the path to the ultimate object (which might be useful for the class description to say - and I will correct if thatâs the case).

Why is there both a standard VM and a headless VM?

This may be a silly question but why are there two VMs? Since the headless VM seems to do everything the standard VM does plus you can write proper Gtk apps with it, why would you ever use anything else? I seem to recall someone saying a while ago that the headless VM had not been optimised yet so was slower than the standard VM. Is that all it is?
