Besides what Ben said, advocacy work is not without merit. I'm a fairly recent Smalltalker and so far, that and helping other newcomers once in a while is all that I could contribute. Communities need people with soft kills. You may disagree about *how* he does such work, the actual content, for sure, but that's a feedback better directed to mr. Eng himself. Posting a tirade against an individual on a mailing list may look like an attempt at brigading. Hi Michael, I share the belief that beyond some point pushing for something can backfire, and if you keep going then you enter into the trolls or fanatics zone. However I don't believe the community has to do something, or exclude anybody. In a wild place like the web, all efforts to exclude, silence or ban are futile, so it's up to each one to judge. Richard Kenneth Eng is NOT Mr. Smalltalk

Dear community, I am a silent follower of this list. Now, I feel urged to speak up not on a technical, but a community matter. Every village deserves it's fool. And a wise man does not feed the troll (i did, and doing it right now, sorry). But if this fool is about to take over a considerable amount of public control, the community has to stand up against it. So, I put this to you: I frequently research on Smalltalk-related topics (computer scientist, try to devote time to open source dev next to my small enterprise). And more and more, I notice that Google search results show very much on top of the result list contributions by a self-appointed "Mr. Smalltalk" aka R.K.Eng. who excels at SEO and flooding social media. While self-initiatives are a thriving force for open communities, in this case: * one individual is hoging credit and applause, without ever having commited a single line of code, putting himself into focus (without having any profound knowledge; to the contrary: he shows a deep ignorance towards "our" and other languages, throwing around dubious advertisment slogans), * ...is throwing around with wrong claims (pulling off any potentially interested developer), * ...is starting pointless flame wars against other programming languages (again: detrimental to our community) * ...is doing SEO to make Google show his own results before FOSS community or sciences pages. * ...is getting traction (and money) for his own ends (publicity for the self-appointed "Mr. Smalltalk") * ...denies community leadership by merit (Pharo core developers do know, what they have created and where they want to go in the future, and which audience we should target, they don't need a clueless person telling them to "get into TIOBE index", just for example) * is claiming credit for the work, others have done, fostering his own publicity (not the interests of Pharo/VisualWorks etc). Every professional Javascript developer, who is trying Smalltalk the first time, because he/she has read in a post of "Mr. Smalltalk", that it is better, will instantly dismiss Smalltalk and be disappointed. I love Smalltalk (certainly more than JS), but it is detrimental, to throw around with these wrong claims (which in the end are only a self-serving, ego-centric, attention-greedy campaign to promote "Mr. Smalltalk" himself, a total newbie, who claims credit for the work of others). My suggestion: This community is open and inclusive. But we should clarify, that if a single individual repeatedly goes against those, who do the actual work, claims credits, insults people, then this person is not fit to be part of this community. I would expect 1:0 to give me an empty sequence because (a) for all other natural numbers n, 1:n gives me a sequence of n numbers, and (b) how else am I supposed to get an empty sequence? I really don't understand. JSON needs Dictionaries and Arrays (or other Sequenceable Collections). That has nothing to do with Pharo or how NeoJSON or STONJSON are implemented - it is what defines JSON. Of course, compatible objects work as well (NeoJSONObject is an example). You could make your own. Hi Sven - is there no convenience shortcut we can use in our code to make this less wordy when we are specifying it? E.g. the following is very convenient to write - but doesnât work (as you have $â and not $â ) ex := { 'track'-> 'pharo'. 'language' -> 'smalltalk'. 'exercises' -> {'slug' -> 'hello'. 'id' -> 55. I like that http://www.bagelconcertfinder.com uses Seaside and also my Twitter Bootstrap Library. Thanks so much for your library! I have built several applications in seaside, and always dig using it.. itâs my go to framework when I do a project on my own.. Seaside by default works with stateful (web) components - making it easy to develop - but possibly hard to scale to be the next Twitter, Amazon, ... ;) most everything I work on will never be the next twitter or amazon.. so i am fine tweaking here or there.. I have thought about doing exactly what you are talking about.. In my day job, we use LOTS of Angular. I thought about setting up a REST interface using Teapot, and using angular for the web part.. This provides for a much more interactive user experience, but I also totally love how seaside works.. Maybe for my CMS type project, Iâll use Teapot/Angular.. I will have to think about this for a bitâ¦ I did a project last year where I used teapot in conjunction with an SMS interface to create a very useful bot.. I am stumped about how to write out some simple json (for a config file). I didn't think I need Neo, and STONJSON would be fine but it seems like creating items like: { 'id'-> self id. 'name' -> self name } gives an error about the association. I think you have to do: { ('id'-> self id) asDictionary. ('name' -> self name) asDictionary } everywhereâ¦. But when I switch over to NeoJsonWriter it also complains about Assocations too. I just want a simple output like: { "id" : 12, "name" : "timâ } I thought it was simple to do this? Hi Richard - but why would you expect 1 to: 0 to give you an empty sequence? If I inspect â0 to: 1â I see: 1 -> 0 2 -> 1 So I would expect â1 to: 0â to see: 1 -> 1 2 -> 0. I asked for a sequence going from 1 down to 0 (in my mind). Knowing about all the by: -1 stuff seems very Câish. Of course, I get that maybe it will break peoples existing code (and maybe that would be why it never gets changed) - but it still feels very strange. Or am I missing something? I fully agree with everything Torsten said, but I would like to add a couple of points. It is very easy to add a couple of readable/shareable URL to a classic Seaside app. Here is a simple example: https://audio359.eu/ss/audio359-store?showSKU=sku0101 This jumps right into a web store written in Seaside/Bootstrap (this is #initialRequest: handling special arguments). People also overestimate their need to scale: you can get very far with a classic Seaside app, you just have to know what you are doing. The chance that you will have 1000s or even 100s of (concurrent) users is very small - in B2B even less so. Also, perfect horizontal linear scaling of http web apps does not exist in practice (unless for very simple applications). 9 times out of 10, your users will have to log in, will have preferences/settings, unfinished data structures (shopping cart, ..), and more. All this constitutes your session state. This state must be shared between all workers, which is the big problem. And your web app workers will most probably need to access some shared database as well, which can be a bottleneck as well. You can quite easily scale Seaside using session affinity: your load balancer sends each request from the same client back to the same worker, where its state lives. Hence no need for complex session sharing. When a worker crashes, the client has to log in again and connect to a new worker. You can augment this with minimal session sharing (for example in memcached), so that at least the login and maybe some other essential information is preserved. I have a couple of responsive mobile web apps written with classic Seaside/Bootstrap that perform very well, IMHO. The trick is to make you app fast and do as little work as possible on each interaction. Running Pharo under Ubuntu (Windows Subsystem for Linux)

Thanks to Cyril who told me it was possible, I got Pharo 7 Unix running under the Ubuntu 18 that's part of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in Windows 10. It's not a VM VirtualBox. I documented the install steps on my new blog that uses Jekyll and github pages, which actually took longer to set up than the Pharo under WSL :) The Mesa install step on the blog might be useful for documenting how to get Pharo 7 to work in Ubuntu 18? https://fuhrmanator.github.io/Pharo-in-WSL/

If numeric keys are silently written as strings when generating JSON, you can get JSON that is technically legal but practically ambiguous. Start with the obvious: (Dictionary new: 2) at: 1 put true; at: '1' put false; asJson => {"1": true, "1": false}. More subtly, d := Dictionary new: 2. d at: 1.0 put: true. d at: 1.0 successor put: false. FloatPrintPolicy value: InexactFloatPrintPolicy new during: [d asJson] => {"1.0": true, "1.0": false}. All things considered, *not* accepting numeric keys seems like the best thing to do. In my own Smalltalk, a string understands a little over two thousand selectors, of which about 440 are specific to strings, the others being shared by other sequences. That's quite a lot to search through. As it happens, I *do* have a 'searching' category and the #findString:[startingAt:][ignoringCase:][ifAbsent:] methods are in it. The methods defined in the ANSI Smalltalk standard are #indexOfSubCollection:startingAt:[ifAbsent:] and are quite easy to find once you recall that methods for searching in a sequence generally have 'find' or 'indexOf' in their name. It is surprisingly hard to keep categories consistent. If there is a way to say "here I am browsing method M in category G of class C, is there an ancestor of C that puts the selector of M in a different category?" I would love to know it. (Adding such a code critic to my Smalltalk is on the TODO list.) I can't speak for Teapot, but I can tell you that the extra "body" container object is not standard for JSON/REST API's. Teapot or Zinc adding extra node to JSON POST

Hi, Using Teapot (which uses Zinc) i found something i do not know if it is a standard or done on purpose or a bug. A Teapot service (POST) accept a JSON entry. In the client the 'body' is set with the JSON. In the server the ZnRequest contents insert a JSON node 'body' to the original JSON. The original JSON POST is: {name: "John", age: 31, city: "New York"} At server ZnRequest contents JSON is: {"body":{name: "John", age: 31, city: "New York"}} Is this done on purpose by Zinc ? I try to find if it is a standard in JSON communications but with no luck yet ! Hi, I have a build script too to build the drgeo bundle from scratch [1], I will take a look yours to add up. In the mean time I built a new mac os bundle with your info.plist. I tested it on a mac, but without privilege to move it to the Applications location. After downloading it to the Desktop folder, I can experiment: 1. Double click on the app does not work 2. From a shell, "Desktop/DrGeo.app/Contents/MacOS/Pharo" starts DrGeo fine, without error, locale is correctly detected 3. Double click again on the app starts it this time, but I got a funny error message: "error with stdout does not exist, force recursive file creation, filename "stdout" Can someone with privilege to the Application location, test this new DrGeo bundle[2]? No - my point is, why are the basics for reasonable testing not in the image? Such that tests are easy, and a joy to write where failures are obvious when they occur. We seem to have 2 extremes - assert:equals: does a lovely job of showing what it expects and you got with a nice diff view (that is fab) - then the other extreme of testing an exception message which is unfathomableâ¦. Iâm not asking for all the esoteric combinations - but a good foundation to build tests on should be in the image. Extra bells and wistles should be easy to load for more advanced testing. (We kind of have that, but its spread across multiple projects that might be consolidat-able). SUnit is now 30 years old - advancements have been made, and the other xUnit derivatives now all do a much better job than us which makes me very sad. As mentioned, we do equality (and inequality) well, collection equality looks good too - exception testing is present but not good enough. I also argue that "greater and less than" are common, as are some basic collection checks (notably String begins, ends, contains and regex). I agree with the argument that we donât want to bloat the image - but doing the above well is so important to ensure we can easily write great tests, particularly when we find a problem and want to whip up at test to help understand how to solve it (many of our tests in the image are not as helpful as they could be). Is there at least some agreement to sorting this out? Could we put it on the 8.0 roadmap (its a tiny win, and quite easy to do - although cleaning up the old tests to use better features is a harder job - but worth it IMHO). This all comes out of my casual work on Exercism, which is about teaching people how to use a core language/environment and demonstrate how amazing that environment is. In many respects our advancements show case well : - zero conf lets us get an environment up and running in peoples hands in less than a minute (I donât think many of the other 30 language on there can do this) - git/tonel/zinc lets us play nicely with their cloud based platform - opal/moldable debugger/undeclared variables lets us do TDD as it was meant to be - iceberg (and GitHub) lets us create a project where community contribution is easy I think we still fall a bit short in our IDE (not faulting Calypso - its still work in progress and needs more help), testing (as per above), language documentation (we have too much old out of date stuff). So when I want to right a test to assure that Iâve thrown an exception with the right message, why is it so hard (in the core image)? Am I missing something obvious? Both a reader and a writer are a mapper, because they (might) need to convert to/from types called schemas. (They might not need it if they only use Arrays and Dictionaries). A schema is either a real class name, or just an abstract name to refer to (that last use is more for reading, like ArrayOfPoints, because the concept of a typed collection does not exist in Pharo, although there is also #nextPut:as:). When you map a schema, you describe how it is read/written. You do that either with a very general block (custom mapping) or according to the common Pharo model (object mapping: a Pharo object/class with named properties). In that last case, there is indeed a second level of mapping: that of the properties making up the object/class. Here you find mapAccessors, mapInstVars, etc (see the protocol mapping & convenience of NeoJSONObjectMapping). A key issue is that (especially when reading) schema/type information must be passed along (again because the concept of type of an instance variable does not exist in Pharo). Especially collections are hard to map. Some JSON is very dynamic in nature and does not follow a strict static structure of types. > Regards!

One solution would be: NeoJSONReader new on: json readStream; for: #Foo customDo: [ :mapping | mapping decoder: [ :x | (x at: #id) -> (((x at: #level1) at: #level2) at: #name) ] ]; nextAs: #Foo. The returned type is an Association, but it could be a domain object. #Foo is just an identifier. The disadvantage is that anything deeper is not mapped, but comes in as a plain dictionary, in a sense defeating the concept of mapping (but for leaf like structures this might be what you want). [Parsing XML] Error calling Shout

Hi, all. I am currently using the AWS S3 plugin to get a list of buckets available. This call sends back a pile of XML.. The XML is coming back valid, but I am getting back something like: XMLDocumentHighlightDefaults errorâ¦. and inside this error, SHTextStylerST80 new <- where ânewâ is being sent to nil.. It looks like SHTextStylerST80 is part of the Shout package, but I cannot get shout to install on 7.01.. anyone have any ideas? Iâve been able to find out more information about this - and have now got the full filename and error in question: `'C:/Users/sam/Documents/Pharo/images/exercism-test-run-7.0-32bit/pharo-local/iceberg/dionisiydk/StateSpecs/StateSpecs-DSL-PragmaBasedShouldExpressions-Tests.package/SpecOfShouldExpressionDriverTests.class/instance/testRaiseUnexpectedMessageWhenTooMuchMessages.st': The filename or extension is too long.` So the path is 262 characters long. (hence the error) The package this file is in, is a downstream project prerequisite for PharoWebBrowser - which is dragged in because that project doesn't have different groupings for code and tests (something I am working with Sean to try to get resolved - although Iâm scratching my head on how you can test baselines?). We don't see this in the image in OSX because the included baseline doesn't actually pre-req these pragma based tests? However from below, have I now understood that when we reference a project, we end up cloning the whole repository for that repo on disk (so one big read), and then metacello picks out the relevant files from the baseline. So possibly, this might be some orphaned files/packages in the repo - that iceberg no longer knows about, but git does? The longer term fix is to convert PharoWebBrowser to Tonel and see if we can improve the grouping. Google Protobuf and usage of Slots

Hi, from my point of view the pillars of future services are Google protobuf[1] and gRPC. Protobuf can be used for configuration files[2], tracing/logging[3] and storage[4]. gRPC is built on top-of HTTP2 and is using the protobuf IDL and marshaling. Many projects (etcd, envoy, Google Cloud, ...) provide a gRPC based API (and some automatically map this from REST to gRPC) already and I would like to build clients and servers in Pharo. My plan of action is to start with a protobuf compiler/model and then look into binding the gRPC C implementation to Pharo. I have started with gokr's Protobuf code on Smalltalkhub and defined base types and a Slot and could use some help to structure this more nicely. The code is at: https://github.com/zecke/pharo-protobuf and I could use some comments/review of how to use Slots in a significant way (add "type" validation on write, constraint checks, builder pattern?). Given a definition like: syntax = "proto2"; package foo; enum Color { RED = 0; GREEN = 1; BLUE = 2; } message MyMessage { optional Color color = 1; } And an encoded binary message of #[8 2] the following can: PBTestMessage materializeFrom: #[8 2] readStream decode and set the color field. Proper handling of mandatory and repeated fields are missing and decoding the other values, nested messages... :) Looking forward to have some eyes on the code. holger [1] A simple IDL to define structs/enums with marshaller/materializer for a binary protocol, JSON (and yaml). [2] Without having to write a XML/JSON schema and getting validation from the IDL. [3] Many of us log structured to text, then have something like logstash to re-parse, regexp it and dump it into ElasticSearch. With protobuf we can have plain objects end to end for logging. [4] We have FUEL so this is less interesting for us than others but quite interesting if you are mixing Pharo with other implementation languages.

NeoJSON mapping question

Hi, How to set a path to JSON value in the mapping definition ? I mean i have a simple object with and instance variable but the value of this inst var is deep inside the JSON. mapping mapInstVar: #locator to: 'locator'. This fail because 'locator' is not in the first JSON level. Is possible to do something like: mapping mapInstVar: #locator to: 'booking.vars.locator'. I already tried and fail. Hi, addChild: expects a BlElement not a canvas. A BlElement draws on a canvas object that is passed to it. SpartaCanvas is an abstract class. Hi Tim. Behaviour is similar to Pharo 6. When class is selected the comment belongs to the class. If not then it belongs to the package. There is no such thing as a tag comment. I thought the default comment text is clear enough to avoid confusion. But probably it's not as you wrote this mail. So it is a room for improvements. Package comment is managed as a comment of ts manifest class. My real concern however, is that a simple project (which admittedly pulls in a single Filetree prerequisite - PharoWebBrowser) seems to trigger this error - but confusingly references files that donât appear to be in the image. Tim, It always takes effort to learn a new language/environment/library. You can't expect it to be the same to what you know, or for things to be where you expect them. String is also one of the most overloaded classes in the system, it will never be clean. Lots of things fall under 'accessing', that finding something is classified as such, does not really surprise me. Did you know about the Finder 'by example search' ? I always struggle (even after years of casually using smalltalk) to find the String methods that do the heavy lifting (and are comparable to other languages). The methods are normally there, but they often have names that donât compare well with other languages. I think that what doesnât help is the categorisation of methods in String - for example - if I want to do some searching in a String - why is #findString: in âaccessingâ - I totally didnât think to look in there. To be honest, I really wanted a protocol called âsearchingâ - but its not there? I find the protocols in the system to be pretty bad in all honesty. Its a good idea, but I donât think its clear on whether its protocol, or category. And if the former - where are the tools to help ensure things conform to a protocol? If the latter - where are the useful, commonly used categories? Are there any plans to do anything in this area - or is it just a lump it scenario? Tim

Hi, I am requesting good will to test a Mac OSX bundle for DrGeo. It is here[1], it is not signed, so you will have OS X warning,Â and likely should be dropped on the Applications folder. Pharo has moved away from Continuous Evolution which has an impact on reproducability to Bootstrapping with Continuous Integration & Testing. Pharo Launcher update installation issues
