Hello all I was looking for the XMLWriter package because it seems it is not part of the complete XML package but I am not sure which is the newest one since I have found several here : http://www.squeaksource.com/XMLWriter/ I am using pharo 2.0 just in case this is relevant. Description of the work: The goal of this PhD is to study Smalltalk integration with FPGAs for robotic applications. This integration will enable us get the best from both worlds. Developers are provided with a high-level dynamic reflective language (Smalltalk) for building and debugging their applications. Still, we can have high performances by projecting part of the programs into FPGAs. These reconfigurable hardware chips can achieve performance faster than C programs, while consuming much less energy. The work to do can decompose into the following tasks: -Build reference robotic applications fully in Pharo Smalltalk using actual robots (see http://car.mines-douai.fr/robots/) -Analyze these applications to identify critical parts to project on FPGAs to significantly increase performances (speed, energy) -Do the actual projection to FPGA and evaluate performances of the transformed applications -Generalize the approach and define a methodology for turning Smalltalk code into FPGA -Propose a solution to automate the methodology The Ph.D student will receive a grant which net amount is approximately 1420 euros per month for 3 years (36 months). He will be co-supervised by LoÃ¯c Lagadec from the ENSTA-Bretagne (Lab-STICC, Brest) and Jannik Laval, Luc Fabresse and Noury Bouraqadi from Ecole des Mines de Douai (CAR, http://car.mines-douai.fr/) The first 18th month will be spent in Douai (Lille area), while the last half of the PhD will be spent in Brest. New win32 VM available (was: More than 500MB for windows)

So, after spending unproportionally huge time (2days) dealing with jenkins config idiosyncrasies, it finally managed to build it. http://files.pharo.org/vm/pharo/win/latest.zip This VM should react properly on AddressSpaceLimit=<number of MBytes> setting in .ini file. The ini file is located in same directory as VM executable. If it doesn't exists, you can run VM once and it will create it automatically. Thanks for patience. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko.

Phexample state keeping

I'm playing with Phexampe because I think that in my current project the setup of test scenarios will be a huge part of the testing. So do it in a structured way reducing doubled initialization procedures should be something good. I'm just wondering how the state is kept between dependent test cases. A Phexample test case returns a value so that value := self given: #shouldHaveCollectedSomeState transfers the state from the dependent test case into the current. What do you do if the state produced is more complex than a single value? To be honest I don't understand why in a test case that calls #given: a tearDown/setUp cycle is executed between the first and the second test case. I think while using #given: I make the second test case explicitly dependent on the first. Why should I reset state collected by the first before executing the second? I'm a bit reluctant to create new classes for all collected state scenarios so that I can return them properly from one test case to another. Any ideas? thanks, Norbert

And no ugly crash. (note it cannot be strictly 512Mb, because some space already taken by image + jit + etc.. ) now, i set AddressSpaceLimit=1024 in .ini file and run the same again, and it stopped at 984 (megs allocated), again showing low-space warning (but it took a whiile to show it.. and image responding quite slow.. maybe because i run on virtual box and it is more memory than i gave to boxed windows, so it forced to do a lot of disk swapping. so, it works. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko.
