The name of an extension method is normally not in italic, only if you are browsing it directly in the package, and then only if it's an extension of this package. Furthermore, you don't see to which protocol a method belongs when browsing all methods of a class (I do that often...). Hence this icon quickly provides important information that you otherwise have to access with several clicks. And even worse, at least me I often forget to check whether a method is implemented as an extension and tend to assume that it's a standard method of this class, so I might use it as such, but then other people might not have this extension loaded. I personally don't agree with this as I can't see why this icons should hurt any developer, in particular as you now also get an explanation label when placing the mouse over it, so everybody should be able to quickly understand the meaning of each icon. Of course, not everybody needs all of those icons, but why should their presence make the browser messy? Lukas another example: Here I was browsing some methods and suddenly there is cross: I said oops this method is an extension. And I did not have to click on *packageinfo-base because in the flow of my reading I was not looking for extensions per se. So I believe that if we carefully design icons there are much more important that you think. Note that I'm browsing code that is not mine and this makes a huge difference. Lukas I think that david is spending a lot of time on improving the browser so I would suggest you to be less aggressive and more bringing suggestions. Having good icons is important. Knowing that there is a supercall is as important as knowing that the method is specialized. Look at LimitedWriteStream you get instantanly the fact that the three methods are doing a super send! and this is really important to know. > - The same is for abstract method icon. I browsed contents on WriteStream and I would like to know whether there is a supercall. For me this is much more important than to know that there is a specialization because as you say I can know if I click on the subclasses. But to show you that when I use your argument I'm also wrong :) if you look at RWBinaryOrTextStream with the package view and not the inheritance hiearchy then you could say ok I just have to clik on the subclasses but you do know that there is one. So knowing that padToEndWith: is actually define in a subclass is a good information. As the supercall and abstract is. So conclusion having both information would be good. We should actually think about moving more data into files... for example, there are huge literal arrays in UCSTable's class side initialize methods that are only there for initializing the class a long time ago. These would not even be needed to be read on startup. Of course, this is violently against the "everything in the image" philosophy of Squeak... but I guess that any device one would want to run it on would have a filesystem of some sort. [Pharo-project] Cannot load PolyMorph/UIEnhancements

I tried to load the Polymorph package in a fresh pharo image and I didn't succeed. I tried pharo 10044, 10070 and 10074 image. And I tried loading from universes as well as via monticello. The result is the same: When the Loading progress bar appears it freezes after 10% of the bar is full. It doesn't matter if I load it with 64bit or 32bit (binary) vm. I had no trouble loading the same into a 3.10.2 squeak image. How do I debug the action while it is showing the progress bar? thanks in advance, Norbert

(embedding a 20Mb font file would grow the image by 20Mb) So, the default font could be a large Unicode one, for example 2.Easier to create a one-click app for distribution. 3.Easier to install the font files into the OS so that other applications can also use them. 4. Free fonts that don't allow embedding can be used (e.g. Bitstream). This widens the choice of available free fonts. If option A is chosen, find a few freely redistributable fonts, then let the Designer choose the ones that work best with the Pharo theme. And for option B, let the Designer choose the fonts from each OS that work best with the Pharo theme. 3. The developers then choose the code font(s) Of course, the choice isn't strictly either/or. It is possible to redistribute a font AND use the OS fonts. e.g. ListFont => Mac=Lucida, Windows=Arial, neitherFontAvailableOnOS=use redistributed font. We dont have to clone native apps/Java IDE's - but at least we can learn a little bit about branding/marketing and how good design can attract more people. Take another example - will you find a Smalltalk IDE with good looking Wizards these days? >From the Smalltalkers point of view (knowing about #subclass: messages) it's technically useless and will bloat the image - but I've seen many newbies blaming Smalltalk to be that complicated the first time they just click around and search for the Class/Package wizard. Squeak is also not very supportive if one needs help - there is a help menu but no real help/documentation. That does not mean we should have the splash screen or spend the whole day implementing Wizards - but at least we should discuss and think about what the first impression for others/non Smalltalkers will be and how we can help them to take first hurdles and enjoy the power of Smalltalk... A couple of quick thoughts based on the Polymorph/TT image: (1) Halt-once looks like it is built into the image as a mode. It is a VERY useful concept, but Dolphin has long had a goodie that provides the feature as a class, used something along the lines of the following: abandonHopeAllYeWhoRaiseEndlessWalkbacksHere self someUnfortunateConditionDetected ifTrue:[ Once do:[ self halt. ]. " Once reset. " ]. Any takers? I did not write it, but I think we will find it licensed in a friendly way, or it could be easily reconstructed, if not improved by having registered instances, allowing independent conditional breakpoints, and all in code, or as I like to say "done in the language, not TO the language." (2) The extended search sub-menu. At the really picky level (ignore if there is ANY problem with this), it might be nicer to pop out a submenu vs. jumping to another menu. Bill Wilhelm K. The default font should be sensible and generally acceptable, but since everyone can change that and choose their own favourite font from those available in their operating system, does it really matter what the default is? Note that it is possible to set each default to be a list of fonts, and whichever is found first will be used. e.g. Preferences setListFontTo: (LogicalFont familyName: 'Monaco' fallbackFamilyNames: #('Segoe UI'. 'Helvetica'. 'Accuny') pointSize: 8) In this way, a Mac user will see Monaco , a Windows Vista user will see Segoe UI (the Vista default), and other OS users will see Helvetica or, as a last resort, the Accuny strike font. Adrian tried today the font that TextMate uses, it's is very nice for code (but not free). We should experiment a bit, especially to find a good coding font that allows to disambiguate between 1|l and 0oO and is mono-spaced. The current font can be made a bit less gray by setting the GlyphContrast to e.g. 55. You need to talk about Vms, source, changes, images that have noything to do with pictures... and mostly you need to discuss which image to use (like: don't use the one that is called "squeak", but instead an image from somewhere else called "squeak dev"). Marcus, I'm fairly certain the problem is in Redmond. It would not be the first thing they botched. I'm just annoyed with myself for not fingering them sooner. By all means though, newbies will encounter it, so protecting Windows from itself is probably a good move. Is Pharo going to adopt the one-click structure? On Windows, I do not much care. The VM "installs" trivially, and shortcuts are cheap. Shortcuts are not much more expensive on Linux, or maybe I haven't learned enough about how to skip steps on Linux. The VM is a little more trouble on Linux, but nothing I can't handle, and I'll gain familiarity as I go. All that said, since there is something that is brain-dead simple on the main platforms, I'm not too proud to use it ;) I do not much care whether we use it or not. Yes, but you would need to update the references to the image file On Windows, you'd have to change pharo.ini. There is a line that references the image file name. On Linux, something similar. On Mac, something similar. But, it might be easier to just rename the image and changes to match pharo.image, pharo.changes. Got it. My basic algorithm for finding problems usually starts with "what could Microsoft have done to screw this up?" I faltered. In this case, MS could have made a mockery of the file names in the archive, and that is apparently just what they did. I do not care for 7-Zip's user interface, but the engine works. It magically understood the archive (what's that word again, standards???<g>), unzipped all the files, and now everything works. Very impressive BTW. Dumb question: to copy an image/changes between machines, would I simply copy the image and change files (a few levels down in Resources), and leave the rest of the "one click image" alone? Bill, I'm on XP and I haven't had any issues with one-click images. Put it anywhere and run Pharo.exe. But, I've been a big fan of Sophie-based one-clicks. Both my son's have Ubuntu and I can take my one-click on a USB key and work from there. I don't see the point of a splash screen. I think it only makes sense if starting the application takes several seconds and the splash screen indicates how long it will take until it the app is ready (like with Photoshop). Apart from that, and especially if starting up only takes a second or two max, I don't see any use. Beginners always lament on the default look of Squeak. Hopefully this will change with Pharo and Truetype/Polymorph. Some comments on the pharo one click image: I dont know who builds the custom VM for Pharo - but the icon is the one from Seaside and should be replaced. There are various parameters in the *.ini file to product brand a squeak VM based application therefore I would also recommend to add the folling lines into the Pharo.ini file: WindowTitle=Pharo This sets the window title to Pharo instead of Squeak and QuitDialogMessage="Quit Pharo without saving?" QuitDialogLabel=Pharo adapts the quit message box of the VM. At least on Win32. See http://www.squeakvm.org/win32/settings.html It would also be good to have a splash screen with the logo or some decent looking graphics/logo combination. The splash screen typically is a *.bmp file located in the same directory as pharo.exe and the default name is splash.bmp. You can set up another name again in the pharo.ini file: SplashScreen="pharo.bmp" SplashTitle=Pharo SplashTime=2000 Attached is a modified Pharo.ini and a sample splash file. Just put it in the same directory as the EXE file for the one click install. Do we have access to professinal designer for a good looking splash/website/icons? Are there any plans regarding this? CS would be better, just had to use a package due to being interleaved with other work... Note that with MC there is no mechanism for removing a method! Perhaps I should have just done the changed methods along with an initialize that would clean up other dependencies, after which an unload of EToys could be done. Hi, The options (in Preference Browser) are :- MonitorTypeLCD or MonitorTypeCRT (effectively, turns sub-pixel anti-aliasing on or off) GlyphContrast - from 1 palest to 100 darkest; 50 is the default. Hinting mode - one of HintingFull - no anti-aliasing - not very good in my opinion HintingLight - aligns only horizontal edges to pixel boundaries (similar to how OSX does it) - the default HintingNone - no hinting - does not attempt to align any edges with (sub)pixel boundaries HintingNormal - aligns both horizontal and vertical edges to (sub)pixel boundaries (similar to how Windows does it) Only LCD screens where the subpixel stripes are ordered RGB, and run vertically are supported. These are the most common type of LCD; others include.. horizontal stripes. BGR stripes some non-striped arrangement of the RGB subpixels. e.g. the OLPC XO screen Supporting BGR will probably be easy. Supporting horizontal stripes will be harder . Non-striped arrangements is hardest - one would need to know the physical pixel co-ordinates for each BitBlt pixel operation. What settings do you use in Ubuntu? Everything looks nice except that i'm not very happy with subpixel rendering on my display. In Ubuntu you have options, to choose a display type , most preferable for subpixel rendering, and i guess, that freetype renders glyphs in worst way, so when i see it on display, i can easily detect a blue/red pixels surrounding glyphs. Is there an option in freetype, to choose the subpixel rendering mode? Or maybe its because my eyes is still sharp :)

Wow, that image looks really gorgeous. And it is snappy too. Some problems I noticed: - Changing system fonts results in a deprecation warning with debugger. - The checkboxes in the preference browser, freetype category have some update problems. [Pharo-project] Recover last changes and friends are useful menu items

BTW for clickExerciser or similar classes. There are no brainer and "good example" so I would not focus on them when a class showing something is not putting the mess around I would keep it. For now once we will remove etoy and fix our todos list, we will have really remove a lot of not nice code already. [Pharo-project] Default windows sizes

The following changeset adjusts the default size of windows, e.g., it makes code browser, the inspector and the process browser larger. The senders/implementors windows are increased in their height and the ratio between the list height and code pane height is changed. Let me know if you prefer other settings.
