How are you supposed to recover code in Pharo - epicea seems half finished?

Hi - Iâve been hit by this a few times now, and Iâm scratching my head how its supposed to work. I moved some classes to another package and tag (but sometimes Pharo does this badly and rather than a sub-tag it makes a new top level package with a hyphen in it). So I then committed my changes to git, and thought nothing of it - but the flaw here is that with a new top package my classes didnât get commited!!! I then changed branch and started something else, but later saw this top level package and thought it was an Iceberg blip (it sometimes doesnât reload packages properly when changing branches) - and so I deleted those classes. A few minutes later it suddenly - it dawned on me Oh noâ¦.. Ok fine - we have changes tech right? But with no .changes file, we use epicea ????? But hereâs the frustration - I know the classes, but they are thousands of lines down the changes list now (Iâve changed branch and loaded new code). Where is the filter by specific class? And gosh its darn slowâ¦. Iâm missing the text editable .changes file right now as this doesnât work so well to get to a specific place to recover methods, comments etc. Am I doing something wrong? Don't be silly, of course it works. Hundreds of people have these, 99% of all servers are Linux, as are 99% of all CI jobs. This issue bit me in the ass before, but I forgot. Yes, I had a senior moment. The issue is this: When I tried to run Pharo under Ubuntu Server 18.04 at OVH last year, it failed. I had to fall back to Ubuntu Server 16.04. This week, I tried to run Pharo under Ubuntu Server 18.04 at Google Cloud Platform and it failed. Again, I had to fall back to Ubuntu Server 16.04. Why does this issue keep biting me in the ass??? Because I'm 65 and my brain is dying. The bigger issue is this: Hosting services like Digital Ocean, OVH, and Google Cloud Platform are becoming increasingly important in the enterprise space. If Pharo can't run on these server operating systems, it's going to be a black eye for the language. We can get away with not supporting this for now, but it will eventually catch up with us. At Google Cloud Platform, for example, the user can choose from this list of hosts: Debian GNU/Linux 9 (Stretch), CentOS 6, CentOS 7, various versions of CoreOS, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Minimal, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Minimal, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Minimal, Ubuntu 18.10 Minimal, various versions of Red Hat, various versions of SUSE, various versions of Window, and so on. It's a long list. *I strongly suspect that many of these are unusable with Pharo.* How to address this? I don't know. But if it's not a major problem now, it will be. Come on, letâs try not to be dismissive , weâve all had that annoying moment where something doesnât work. Richard, was this installed with zero conf or Launcher, and as mentioned - a Linux distro is going to be helpful. Iâm assuming it worked before at some point for you right? But was that v6 and now youâre trying v7? Hi Richard/all - thanks for helping Roelof out. Heâs working through the exercism.io exercises that weâve managed to convert so far. As they are based on more C like languages, they arenât always as OO as we want (once we get a decent set converted, weâll try and add some smallish examples - anyoneâs favourites appreciated). The dictionary reference is normally because the exercise tests like to assert on some description at the end (and dictionaries tend to exist universally in most languages). So view it more as a #printOn: like finalÃ© (this said - Roelof might have this behaviour in the wrong place - but we will see). The feedback so far, seems to have helpfully unblocked him so thanks all. I think you probably need to show us *all* the code. directionLooking: aString self new direction: aString Well, there is your problem. There are two ways for a method to return a value. One is to execute '^ e' for some expression e, which is quite like a 'return e;' statement in C. The other is to execute the whole body and come to the end of the method, and in that case the result is always 'self'. This means that the method as you wrote it - created an uninitialised or incompletely initialised instance of Robot (self new) - asked that instance to set its direction - discarded the result of that setting - forgot the new instance - returned the Robot class What you probably meant was directionLooking: aString ^(self new) direction: aString; yourself where 'yourself' has nothing to do with a new object being created but with the fact that you want the new object as the result, not whatever #direction: returns. directionLooking: aString |newRobot| newRobot := self new. newRobot direction: aString. ^newRobot may be clearer to you. By the way, you didn't say WHY the caller wants a Dictionary instead of a Robot. I don't think I've ever written a program where that was a good idea.
