Socket class>>#ping does not do an ICMP ping at all, I doubt there is even a primitive to do that. Socket does do only UDP/TCP sockets. I always thought that ICMP pings are not 'normal' UDP packets, but I could be wrong. If you know that the other end is an HTTP server, a HEAD request could be useful. I guess that what you mean by slow is that the timeouts are too high for a quick negative answer. There is ZnClinetTests>>#testIfFailNonExistingHost that fails pretty quickly, but that is for a non-existing DNS lookup. An actual connect does currently not honor the ZnClient>>#timeout: setting, that should be fixed, then you should be able to do ZnClient new beOneShot; timeout: 0; head: 'http://zn.stfx.eu'. Ping

Hi list, How does one ping a host from Pharo? I see there is a #ping: method at Socket class, but it's painfully slow... I've tried to use ZnClient as follows: isUp := [ (ZnClient new head: aUrl) isNil ] on: Error do: [ false ]. But it's still way too slow... I think nobody answers the original question... a Configuration is "trusted", for the moment, when it is found in the repo associated to that pharo version (for example 'http://www.squeaksource.com/MetaRepoForPharo14') instead than in another generic repo (for example 'http://www.squeaksource.com/MetacelloRepository'). Andy, The ultimate idea is that there would be a process to validate packages, hopefully an automated one, based on unit tests, lint rules, â¦ Right now, that is not the case. But I do agree that it makes a lot of sense to be able to load something with one click. What is missing is more meta data describing the package itself I guess. How do the Configuration Browser configurations get 'trusted'?

I just stumbled across the configuration browser - it makes life so much easier! Well done. What piqued my curiosity is the tabs 'configurations' and 'untrusted'. Having a set of trusted configurations is a great idea. But, what is the process for trusting things? I am curious, because although I don't have any packages to contribute yet, I hope that will change soon. Cheers Andy
