Bit Manipulation Challenge

I want to take an IP address routing prefix in CIDR [1] notation (i.e. the 24 in "192.168.100.14/24") and convert it into subnet form (i.e. 255.255.255.0). I came up with 4 ways to do that (see below), but none stand out as best (although #3 and #4 seem a bit more straightforward as they avoid the `max` temp). How would you go about it? [ANN] Pharo Launcher 2.2 released!

Hi all, Pharo Launcher 2.2 has just been released! It is available from http://pharo.org/download. It is mostly a bug fix release but it comes with some enhancements. Hi, as Ben correctly pointed out there is the alternative of using a Queue based approach for FFI. It is available as a plugin for the headless VM and it can be used with Pharo 8. It is here: https://github.com/pharo-project/threadedFFI-Plugin The plugin is already compiled and shipped with the VM. It is only required to load the Smalltalk side code with: Metacello new baseline: 'ThreadedFFI'; repository: 'github://pharo-project/threadedFFI-Plugin'; onConflictUseLoaded; load. This is fully integrated as a backend of UFFI, so all the code you already have it will be working fine. You need to give more information to select the callout strategy to use (https://github.com/pharo-project/threadedFFI-Plugin/wiki/Using-with-UFFI) Using TFFI it is possible to receive callbacks from other threads and process them in the VM thread. If you need any help, please feel free to ask in the list, so it can be useful for everybody. Thanks a lot Christophe! It worked like a charm. Now I'm able to build a shareable installation baseline that uses external git repositories not hosted in the oligopolistic providers by downloading them with Iceberg and loading from the hard disk with Metacello. I have updated the Grafoscopio readme with the new installation procedure[1] [1] https://mutabit.com/repos.fossil/grafoscopio/doc/tip/readme.md.html Now, as I'm using that pattern for almost all my baselines (as they're not hosted on GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucked), I would like to create some kind of Metacello "plugin" that extends its vocabulary to load several repositories in that way. I will be using a Pharo MOOC lesson from Stephan where he extended numbers to understand tabletop RPG vocabulary, but with Pharo 8. I wouldn't mind to host this on GitHub to make it easily loadable, as it would open the door to any non-GitHub repository and I will share the "plugin" here. Maybe it can be made a part of official Metacello. My point is that this short and key explanation inspires me to learn how to collaborate in more core technologies behind Pharo and to share my plans, advances and questions. So, thanks again. I wanted to do that: only "semaphore signal", But that somehow doesn't work. UK Smalltalk User Group Meeting - Wednesday, July 29th

The next meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Wednesday, July 29th. Peter Svensson will present his work on Cloudsdk-st. Cloudsdk-st (https://github.com/psvensson/cloudsdk-st) is an experiment in ways to work with cloud deployment from a Smalltalk image. Traditionally cloud deployments run 'out of band' in separate build scripts or build/CI/CD systems. This project lets you define Docker images (using Dockerfiles) for Smalltalk, send them to the build system of a cloud provider directly and then choose what kind of service you want your image to be (cloud function or long-running VM). Currently it only supports Google Cloud and has a very rough UI. Future plans include support for AWS and Azure as well as better feedback and a Spec2 UI. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, this will be an online meeting from home.
